Boss Rush / Challenge Mode
Once you've completed the main story of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, a new and exciting challenge awaits you: the Boss Rush mode! This mode allows you to re-engage with all the major bosses you've faced throughout your adventure, testing your combat prowess and mastery of Link's various items. It's an excellent way to hone your skills, aim for faster clear times, and simply relive some of the game's most epic encounters.
Unlocking Boss Rush
To unlock the Boss Rush mode, you must first complete the main story and defeat the final boss, Malladus. After the credits roll and you save your game, load your completed save file. Head to the Tower of Spirits. Speak with Anjean on the ground floor. She will now offer you the option to participate in the Boss Rush challenge.
Preparation is Key
Before diving into the Boss Rush, it's highly recommended to ensure Link is fully equipped and prepared. While you won't lose items, having a full stock of certain consumables can make a significant difference, especially if you're aiming for a perfect run.
- Hearts: Max out your Heart Containers. Collecting all Heart Containers and Heart Pieces will give you a significant health advantage.
- Potions: Stock up on Red Potions from the various shops around New Hyrule. These can be lifesavers during prolonged battles.
- Arrows: Ensure your Quiver is full of arrows. Many boss strategies rely heavily on projectile attacks.
- Bombs: Have a full supply of Bombs in your Bomb Bag. Several bosses are vulnerable to explosive damage.
- Spirit Gems: While not directly used in combat, having a high number of Spirit Gems collected will reflect your overall progress and might influence potential rewards or recognition for completing the Boss Rush.
Boss Rush Order and Strategies
The Boss Rush will pit you against all major dungeon bosses in a fixed order. You will face them sequentially without breaks, so managing your health and resources is crucial. Here's a breakdown of each boss and their recommended strategies:
Stagnox, the Armored Colossus (Forest Temple)
- Phase 1: Use your Whirlwind to clear the poisonous gas around Stagnox. Once clear, target the glowing spots on its legs with your Sword.
- Phase 2: When Stagnox charges, dodge and wait for it to get stuck. Use your Bomb to blow open its back armor. Then, use the Bow to shoot the exposed weak point. Repeat until defeated.
Fulguro, the Barbed Beast (Snow Temple)
- Phase 1: Use the Boomerang to carry a Bomb to Fulguro's back, where its weak point is located. Detonate the bomb to stun it.
- Phase 2: Once stunned, approach and slash its weak point with your Sword. Be wary of its ice attacks and rolling charges. Repeat the Boomerang/Bomb strategy.
Cragma, the Lava Lord (Fire Temple)
- Phase 1: Use the Bow to shoot the glowing spots on Cragma's hands when it tries to punch you. This will stun it.
- Phase 2: While stunned, quickly use the Whip to grab onto one of the platforms on its back. Climb up and slash the crystal on its head with your Sword. Repeat, being careful of its lava attacks.
Skeldritch, the Ancient Fossil (Sand Temple)
- Phase 1: Use the Bow to shoot the red eye on Skeldritch's head when it emerges from the sand.
- Phase 2: When it's stunned, use the Sand Wand to create a path to its back. Climb onto its back and use your Sword to destroy the segments of its spine. Repeat until only the head remains.
- Phase 3: For the final phase, use the Sand Wand to create a ramp directly to its head and attack the eye.
Byrne (Tower of Spirits - Final Encounter)
- Phase 1: Byrne is quick. Use your Sword to deflect his energy blasts back at him. When he's stunned, rush in for a combo.
- Phase 2: When he uses his grappling claw, dodge and wait for an opening. His attacks become more aggressive, so timing your dodges and counter-attacks is crucial.
Chancellor Cole and Malladus (Dark Realm)
This is the ultimate test, combining two distinct boss encounters.
Chancellor Cole
- Phase 1: Cole will summon various enemies. Use your Sword and other items to defeat them.
- Phase 2: When Cole appears, he'll often teleport. Use the Boomerang to hit him when he's vulnerable, or try to anticipate his movements for a direct Sword attack.
Malladus (Possessed Zelda)
- Phase 1: This fight requires precise timing. You'll need to use the Spirit Flute to play the Song of Awakening while Princess Zelda (as a Phantom) distracts Malladus. When Malladus is stunned by Zelda, quickly play the song.
- Phase 2: After playing the song, Malladus will be briefly vulnerable. Attack his glowing weak point with your Sword. Repeat this process several times, being careful to avoid his powerful attacks.
Rewards and Recognition
Successfully completing the Boss Rush mode often grants you a sense of accomplishment and bragging rights. While there isn't a unique item reward, you'll likely receive a congratulatory message and potentially a faster clear time recorded, which you can then try to beat on subsequent attempts. It's a true test of your mastery over Link's arsenal and your understanding of each boss's patterns.
