Optional Dungeons & Challenges
Beyond the main quest, Spirit Tracks offers a wealth of optional content designed to test your skills, reward exploration, and provide valuable upgrades. These challenges range from hidden dungeons to mini-games, each contributing to a more complete and satisfying Hyrule adventure.
The Cave of Trials (Forest Realm)
The Cave of Trials is a multi-floor combat gauntlet located in the Forest Realm. It's an excellent way to earn rupees, treasure, and even a Heart Container. You can access it after completing the Forest Temple.
- Location: South of the Forest Temple, accessible by train. Look for a cave entrance marked on your map.
- Requirements: No specific items are required to enter, but a fully upgraded Sword, Bow, and Bombs will make your journey significantly easier. The Whirlwind and Boomerang are also useful for crowd control.
- Strategy:
- Floors 1-5: These floors primarily feature Stalfos, Keese, and Octoroks. Focus on quick sword strikes and use your Bow for ranged enemies.
- Floors 6-10: Expect tougher enemies like Darknuts and Armos. Use your Bombs to stun Armos before attacking. Darknuts require careful dodging and attacking their exposed back.
- Floors 11-15: This is where the challenge ramps up. You'll encounter multiple powerful enemies simultaneously, including heavily armored foes and Wizzrobes. The Whirlwind can be invaluable for pushing enemies into pits or stunning them.
- Rewards:
- Completing Floor 5: Small Treasure.
- Completing Floor 10: Large Treasure and a significant Rupee reward.
- Completing Floor 15: A Heart Container, permanently increasing your maximum health.
Ocean Temple Side Quests (Ocean Realm)
While not a separate dungeon, the Ocean Temple area offers several challenging side quests that provide valuable rewards and expand on the game's lore.
- The Lost Mermaid:
- Location: After completing the Ocean Temple, speak to the Old Man in Papuchia Village. He'll tell you about a lost mermaid.
- Walkthrough:
- Travel to the small island located just east of Papuchia Village.
- Use your Whip to swing across the gaps and reach the mermaid, who is stuck on a high ledge.
- Speak to the mermaid, who will ask you to take her back to Papuchia Village.
- Carefully transport her back to the Old Man. Avoid hitting obstacles or enemies, as this will cause her to fall and you'll have to restart.
- Reward: A Force Gem, which helps restore the Spirit Tracks.
- Pirate Hideout Challenge:
- Location: After obtaining the Bow, return to the Pirate Hideout in the Ocean Realm (the area where you first met the pirates).
- Walkthrough:
- Inside the hideout, you'll find a series of targets. Use your Bow to hit all the targets within the time limit.
- The targets are strategically placed, requiring precise aiming and quick reflexes. Some targets may be hidden behind obstacles or move.
- Reward: A Big Bomb Bag upgrade, allowing you to carry more Bombs.
Take 'Em All On! (Tower of Spirits)
Once you've cleared a certain number of floors in the Tower of Spirits, you can revisit specific sections for a "Take 'Em All On!" challenge. These are timed combat trials against waves of enemies.
- Access: Speak to Anjean in the Tower of Spirits after completing a significant portion of the main story (usually after clearing the first three main dungeons). She will offer you these challenges.
- Strategy:
- Each challenge focuses on a specific set of floors you've already completed.
- Your goal is to defeat all enemies within the time limit.
- use all your acquired items and upgrades. The Bow, Bombs, and Whirlwind are particularly effective for clearing rooms quickly.
- Rewards: Completing these challenges often grants valuable treasure, rare materials, and large sums of Rupees. Some challenges may even reward you with a Heart Container or a rare collectible.
