Item Upgrades
While Link is already a formidable hero, many of his core items can be upgraded throughout your adventure in Hyrule. These enhancements often provide significant advantages, making exploration easier, combat more manageable, and puzzles more approachable. Prioritizing these upgrades can drastically improve your gameplay experience. This section details how to acquire each major item upgrade.
Sword Upgrades
Your trusty sword is your primary weapon, and improving it is paramount. There are three distinct upgrades for Link's blade:
- White Sword: This is your first upgrade. After clearing the first two dungeons, the Deepwood Shrine and the Cave of Flames, you'll gain access to the Elemental Sanctuary. Fuse Kinstone pieces with the Minish Elder in Minish Village to open the path. Inside the sanctuary, you'll imbue your Picori Blade with the power of the Earth Element, transforming it into the White Sword. This upgrade allows you to perform the Spin Attack.
- Four Sword: The ultimate blade! To obtain the Four Sword, you must gather all four elements: Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind. After acquiring the White Sword (Earth and Fire), proceed through the Fortress of Winds to gain the Water Element, and finally the Palace of Winds for the Wind Element. Once all four are collected, return to the Elemental Sanctuary. The sword will then split into four, allowing Link to create clones and solve advanced puzzles.
Shield Upgrades
A good defense is often the best offense. Link's shield can also be improved:
- Mirror Shield: This invaluable shield is found within the Palace of Winds, the final dungeon. Navigate through the dungeon's many challenges, including its intricate puzzles and powerful enemies. The Mirror Shield is typically found in a chest after defeating a mini-boss or solving a significant puzzle within the latter half of the dungeon. It allows Link to reflect certain projectiles and beams, crucial for solving specific puzzles and defeating particular enemies.
Bomb Bag Upgrades
More bombs mean more destruction and more hidden paths revealed!
- Bomb Bag (Large): To increase your bomb capacity, you'll need to visit the Syrup's Shop in the Minish Woods. After you've progressed a bit into the game and have a decent amount of Rupees, you can purchase the Large Bomb Bag for 300 Rupees. This will increase your maximum bomb capacity from 10 to 30.
- Bomb Bag (Huge): For the ultimate bomb-carrying capacity, you'll need to fuse Kinstone pieces. Find the Goron in the Lon Lon Ranch cave (accessed by shrinking near the house and entering the small hole). Fuse Kinstone pieces with him. This will cause a Goron to appear in the Veil Falls area. Continue fusing Kinstone pieces with this Goron, and eventually, a chest containing the Huge Bomb Bag will appear, increasing your capacity to 50 bombs. This is a multi-step Kinstone fusion quest, so be prepared to do some exploring and talking to various Gorons.
Quiver Upgrades
Never run out of arrows in a crucial moment again!
- Quiver (Large): Similar to the Bomb Bag, the Large Quiver can be purchased from Syrup's Shop in the Minish Woods for 600 Rupees. This upgrade increases your arrow capacity from 30 to 50.
- Quiver (Huge): The Huge Quiver is also obtained through Kinstone fusing. After completing the Fortress of Winds, return to the Wind Tribe's home in the sky. Fuse Kinstone pieces with the Wind Tribe member who is practicing archery. This will cause a chest to appear containing the Huge Quiver, boosting your arrow capacity to 99.
Wallet Upgrades
Carry more Rupees and buy more valuable items!
- Wallet (Large): The Large Wallet is a reward for completing a specific Kinstone fusion. Fuse Kinstone pieces with the Hurdy-Gurdy Man in Hyrule Town. This will cause a chest to appear in the Hyrule Town fountain area, containing the Large Wallet, which increases your maximum Rupee capacity to 500.
- Wallet (Huge): For the ultimate Rupee capacity, you'll need to complete the Goron Kinstone fusion quest line (the same one that leads to the Huge Bomb Bag). After fusing with all the Gorons and obtaining the Huge Bomb Bag, another chest will appear, this time containing the Huge Wallet, allowing you to carry up to 999 Rupees.
Lamp Upgrade
Shine brighter and longer in the darkest of dungeons!
- Flame Lantern: This upgrade for your standard Lamp is found in the Palace of Winds. It's typically located in a chest after solving a complex puzzle involving air currents or hidden passages. The Flame Lantern provides a wider and brighter light radius, making exploration in dark areas much easier.
Boomerang Upgrade
A faster, more powerful boomerang for stunning enemies and grabbing distant items.
- Magical Boomerang: This powerful upgrade is obtained by completing the Figurine Collection at Carlov's House in Hyrule Town. Once you have collected all 130 figurines, Carlov will reward you with the Magical Boomerang. This boomerang travels faster, can hit multiple enemies, and has a longer range than the regular Boomerang.
