Enemy Weaknesses & Strategies

Navigating the perilous lands of Hyrule and the Twilight Realm requires more than just a sharp sword; understanding your enemies' weaknesses is paramount. This section details effective strategies and item usage for common foes you'll encounter throughout your adventure.

Bokoblins

These green-skinned goblins are a common nuisance. While individually weak, they often attack in groups or from elevated positions.

  • Weakness: Standard sword attacks, especially the Spin Attack.
  • Strategy:
    • For single Bokoblins, a few sword slashes or a well-placed Jump Attack will suffice.
    • When facing multiple Bokoblins, use the Spin Attack (hold B, release) to clear a wide area.
    • If they are on ledges or towers, use the Hero's Bow to pick them off from a distance. A single arrow to the head is often enough.
    • The Gale Boomerang can stun them, allowing for easy follow-up attacks. It's also effective for disarming Bokoblins carrying torches or weapons.

Bulblins

Larger, more aggressive versions of Bokoblins, often riding Boars or wielding heavy weapons.

  • Weakness: Precise attacks, particularly to their exposed backs or when dismounted.
  • Strategy:
    • Mounted Bulblins:
      • When on horseback (Epona), use sword slashes to knock them off their Boars.
      • Alternatively, a well-aimed arrow from the Hero's Bow can dismount them instantly.
      • Once dismounted, they become much easier to handle.
    • On Foot:
      • Bulblins often carry large axes or clubs. Block their attacks with your Hero's Shield, then counter with a Back Slice (Z-target, dodge right/left, then A) or a series of sword combos.
      • The Ball and Chain (obtained in Snowpeak Ruins) is incredibly effective, often defeating them in one hit.
      • For Bulblin Archers, use the Hero's Shield to deflect their arrows or the Hero's Bow to eliminate them before they can fire.

Keese (and Fire/Ice Keese)

Bat-like creatures that fly erratically. Fire and Ice variants add elemental damage.

  • Weakness: Any ranged attack, or a well-timed sword swing.
  • Strategy:
    • Standard Keese: The easiest way to deal with them is with the Gale Boomerang, which can target multiple Keese at once. A simple sword slash as they swoop by also works.
    • Fire Keese: These will ignite Link if they touch him. Use the Hero's Bow or Gale Boomerang to defeat them from a safe distance. The Iron Boots can also protect against the knockback from their explosion if you're forced into close quarters.
    • Ice Keese: Similar to Fire Keese, but they will freeze Link. Again, ranged attacks are your best friend. The Ball and Chain can shatter them instantly.

Stalfos

Skeletal warriors that reassemble after being defeated. Found in various dungeons, notably the Forest Temple and Arbiter's Grounds.

  • Weakness: Bombs, the Ball and Chain, and repeated attacks to their scattered bones.
  • Strategy:
    • Initial Encounter: Attack them with your sword until they collapse into a pile of bones.
    • Preventing Reassembly:
      • Immediately after they collapse, quickly switch to your Bombs and toss one onto the pile of bones. This will destroy them permanently.
      • Alternatively, the Ball and Chain is a devastating weapon against Stalfos. A single hit will often shatter them, preventing reassembly.
      • If you don't have bombs or the Ball and Chain, you must continuously attack the pile of bones with your sword until they are completely destroyed. This can be challenging if multiple Stalfos are present.
    • Stalfos Knights: These larger Stalfos carry shields. Use a Shield Attack (Z-target, then A) to stun them and break their guard, then follow up with sword attacks.

Shadow Beasts

Creatures from the Twilight Realm that appear in groups. They are immune to damage unless all are defeated simultaneously or in quick succession.

  • Weakness: Wolf Link's Midna Charge, the Spin Attack, and the Ball and Chain.
  • Strategy:
    • As Wolf Link:
      • This is the most effective method. Use Midna's Charge (B button) to unleash a powerful area-of-effect attack. Target one Shadow Beast, then release B when the reticle expands to hit all nearby enemies. This is crucial for defeating them in groups.
      • Prioritize the Shadow Beasts that are howling, as they are often calling for reinforcements.
    • As Human Link:
      • The Spin Attack is your primary tool. Charge it up (hold B) and release when multiple Shadow Beasts are close. You'll need to defeat all of them in quick succession before they can revive each other.
      • The Ball and Chain is also highly effective, capable of one-shotting Shadow Beasts. Use it to quickly thin their numbers.
      • The Great Spin Attack (unlocked by learning the final Hidden Skill) is incredibly powerful and covers a wide area, making it ideal for clearing groups.

Darknuts

Heavily armored knights that are formidable opponents. Found in later dungeons like the Temple of Time and Hyrule Castle.

  • Weakness: Exposing their vulnerable body after their armor is removed.
  • Strategy:
    • Armor Phase:
      • Their heavy armor makes them impervious to most attacks. The key is to remove it.
      • Use the Back Slice (Z-target, dodge right/left, then A) to get behind them and land a hit. This will often cause pieces of their armor to fall off.
      • The Mortal Draw (no Z-target, wait for enemy to approach, then A) is incredibly effective, often removing multiple pieces of armor or even their entire suit in one go.
      • The Ball and Chain can also chip away at their armor with repeated hits.
      • In the Temple of Time, the Spinner can be used to knock them off balance, allowing for attacks.
    • Vulnerable Phase:
      • Once their armor is gone, they become much faster but also vulnerable.
      • Target their exposed body with rapid sword slashes. The Ending Blow (Z-target, enemy knocked down, then A) is a great finisher if you can knock them to the ground.
      • Be wary of their increased speed and aggressive attacks in this phase.
