Item Upgrades & Enhancements

While Link is already a formidable hero, a true master of Hyrule knows that every advantage counts. This section details how to acquire crucial upgrades and enhancements for your equipment, significantly boosting your combat prowess and exploration capabilities. Don't leave any stone unturned; these improvements are vital for conquering the challenges that lie ahead!

Sword Upgrades

Your trusty blade can become even more potent. There are two primary sword upgrades to seek out:

  • Master Sword (Reawakened): While the Master Sword is acquired as part of the main story progression in the Temple of Time, its true power is sealed. To fully reawaken it and unleash its light-infused attacks, you must complete the Palace of Twilight. Defeating Zant and restoring the Light of the Sages will imbue the Master Sword with its full, devastating potential, allowing it to glow and deal increased damage.
  • Great Fairy's Sword (Optional): This powerful, two-handed sword offers significantly higher attack power than the Master Sword, though it prevents the use of your shield. To obtain it, you must complete the arduous Cave of Ordeals. Upon reaching the 50th floor and speaking with the Great Fairy, she will reward you with this ultimate weapon. Be warned: the Cave of Ordeals is a gauntlet of enemies, so come prepared with plenty of potions and a strong command of Link's Hidden Skills.

Shield Upgrades

A strong defense is as important as a strong offense. Protect yourself from enemy attacks with these improved shields:

  • Hylian Shield: Your initial Wooden Shield is susceptible to fire. The Hylian Shield, however, is fireproof and offers superior defense against most attacks.
    • Location: You can purchase the Hylian Shield from Malo Mart in Kakariko Village for 200 Rupees, or later from Barnes' Bomb Shop in Kakariko Village after it transforms into Malo Mart. It's a wise investment early in the game.
  • Mirror Shield (Automatic): This isn't an upgrade in the traditional sense, but rather a key story item that replaces your Hylian Shield. The Mirror Shield is acquired in the Arbiter's Grounds and is essential for reflecting light to solve puzzles and defeat certain enemies. It functions identically to the Hylian Shield in terms of defense but adds the crucial light-reflecting ability.

Quiver & Bomb Bag Capacity

Never run out of essential projectiles and explosives again! Expanding your carrying capacity for Arrows and Bombs is crucial for prolonged exploration and combat.

Quiver Upgrades

Increase your maximum arrow capacity:

  1. Large Quiver (60 Arrows):
    • Location: After completing the Goron Mines, head to the STAR Game in Hyrule Castle Town. Successfully complete the game by collecting all orbs within the time limit to earn the Large Quiver.
  2. Giant Quiver (100 Arrows):
    • Location: Once you have the Large Quiver, return to the STAR Game in Hyrule Castle Town. Complete the game again, this time with a stricter time limit and more challenging orb placement, to receive the Giant Quiver.

Bomb Bag Upgrades

Carry more destructive power with these upgrades:

  1. Large Bomb Bag (60 Bombs):
    • Location: Head to Barnes' Bomb Shop in Kakariko Village. You can purchase the Large Bomb Bag for 120 Rupees. This becomes available after you've completed the Goron Mines and Barnes has opened his shop.
  2. Giant Bomb Bag (100 Bombs):
    • Location: This upgrade requires a bit more effort. After acquiring the Fishing Rod, go to the Fishing Hole in Upper Zora's River. Speak to Hena and successfully catch the Hylian Loach. Hena will reward you with the Giant Bomb Bag for your angling prowess.
  3. Water Bomb Bag (30 Water Bombs):
    • Location: This specialized bomb bag is essential for underwater exploration and puzzles. You can purchase it from the Zora who sells Water Bombs in the underwater section of Zora's Domain after you have access to the area.

Wallet Upgrades

Don't let your Rupees go to waste! Expand your wallet to carry more currency for those expensive shop items.

  1. Big Wallet (600 Rupees):
    • Location: After you've collected at least 10 Golden Bugs for Agitha in Hyrule Castle Town, visit her. She will reward you with the Big Wallet as thanks for your efforts.
  2. Giant Wallet (1000 Rupees):
    • Location: Continue your Golden Bug hunt! Once you've collected all 24 Golden Bugs and delivered them to Agitha, she will bestow upon you the Giant Wallet, allowing you to carry the maximum amount of Rupees.

Lantern Oil Capacity

Keep the darkness at bay for longer with an expanded Lantern capacity.

  • Big Bottle of Oil (Double Capacity):
    • Location: This upgrade is found in the Goron Mines. After defeating Fyrus, the dungeon boss, return to Kakariko Village. Speak to the Goron Elder in the hot spring, and he will give you the Big Bottle of Oil as a token of gratitude for saving his people.

Poe Soul Lantern

While not an "upgrade" in the traditional sense, the Poe Soul Lantern is an invaluable tool for tracking down the elusive Poe Souls.

  • Location: After collecting 20 Poe Souls, return to Jovani's house in Hyrule Castle Town (the house with the glowing cat outside). Speak to Jovani, and he will give you the Poe Soul Lantern, which glows when a Poe Soul is nearby, making your hunt significantly easier.
