Rollgoal
Rollgoal is a challenging mini-game found within the Hena's Fishing Hole, located in the Upper Zora's River. This game requires precision and patience as you guide a small ball through intricate mazes using the Wii Remote's motion controls (or the GameCube controller's analog stick). The goal is to reach the end of each course without falling off, collecting all the Rupees along the way for maximum rewards.
Location and Access
To access Rollgoal, you must first travel to the Upper Zora's River. Once there, head to Hena's Fishing Hole. Inside, speak with Hena, the proprietor. You'll find the Rollgoal machine to the left of the entrance. The first few courses are free to play, but later courses will require a small Rupee fee.
Gameplay Mechanics
The core mechanic of Rollgoal involves tilting the playing field to move a small ball. On the Wii, this is done by tilting the Wii Remote. On the GameCube, you'll use the left analog stick. The key is to make subtle, controlled movements. Jerky motions will often send your ball careening off the edge. There are 20 courses in total, each increasing in difficulty and introducing new obstacles.
General Strategies for Success
- Slow and Steady: Rushing is your enemy in Rollgoal. Take your time, especially on narrow paths and around corners.
- Camera Control: use the camera angles to get a better view of the upcoming path. Sometimes, a top-down view is best, while other times, a slightly angled perspective helps with depth perception.
- Rupee Collection: While simply completing the course is the primary goal, collecting all the Rupees on a course will often unlock subsequent courses or better rewards. Plan your route to grab them all without taking unnecessary risks.
- Practice Makes Perfect: Don't get discouraged if you fail a course multiple times. Each attempt helps you learn the layout and the nuances of the controls.
- Know Your Obstacles:
- Moving Platforms: Time your movements carefully to roll onto and off of these platforms.
- Boost Pads: These will propel your ball forward. Use them to clear gaps, but be prepared to adjust your tilt immediately after hitting one to avoid overshooting.
- Bumper Walls: These can be your friend or foe. Use them to gently guide your ball around corners, but avoid hitting them at high speeds.
- Wind Tunnels: These sections will push your ball in a specific direction. Counteract the wind with careful tilting.
Course-Specific Tips (Courses 1-5)
Here are some detailed strategies for the initial courses to get you started:
Course 1: The Basics
- Objective: A simple, straightforward path designed to introduce the controls.
- Strategy: Focus on smooth, gentle tilts. There are no major obstacles. Collect the few Rupees scattered along the wide path. This course is a good warm-up to calibrate your movements.
Course 2: Gentle Curves
- Objective: Introduces slightly narrower paths and gentle curves.
- Strategy: Maintain a steady, slow speed. When approaching a curve, anticipate the turn and begin tilting slightly before the curve itself. Don't overcorrect.
Course 3: The First Gap
- Objective: Features your first jump over a small gap.
- Strategy: You'll encounter a Boost Pad before the gap. Roll onto it at a moderate speed. The pad will launch you across. Immediately after landing, be ready to stabilize your ball to prevent it from rolling off the other side.
Course 4: Moving Platforms
- Objective: Introduces a simple moving platform section.
- Strategy: Observe the platform's movement pattern. Roll onto the platform when it's closest to your current position. As it moves, gently tilt to keep your ball centered. Roll off when it aligns with the next solid path. Patience is key here.
Course 5: Narrow Passages and Wind
- Objective: Combines narrow paths with a section affected by wind.
- Strategy: Navigate the initial narrow paths very slowly. When you enter the wind section, you'll notice your ball being pushed. Tilt against the direction of the wind to maintain a straight trajectory. If the wind is pushing you left, tilt slightly right.
Mastering these initial courses will build the foundational skills needed for the increasingly complex challenges that Rollgoal presents. Good luck, and may your ball stay on course!
