Enemy Bestiary
Welcome, brave adventurer, to the definitive guide to Hyrule's most formidable (and sometimes frustrating) foes in the original The Legend of Zelda for the NES! This section will equip you with the knowledge and strategies needed to overcome every challenge the land throws at you. From the common Octorok to the terrifying Lynel, understanding your enemy is the first step to victory.
Each entry provides detailed information on enemy behavior, weaknesses, recommended gear, and the valuable spoils they drop. Master these tactics, and you'll navigate Hyrule with confidence, turning every encounter into an opportunity for triumph.
Overworld and Dungeon Foes
The land of Hyrule is teeming with dangerous creatures, both above ground and within its labyrinthine dungeons. Understanding their patterns and weaknesses is crucial for Link's survival and success in recovering the Triforce of Wisdom.
Octorok
These octopus-like creatures are one of the most common enemies Link will encounter in the overworld. They are typically found in grassy or rocky areas and pose a consistent, albeit manageable, threat.
- Appearance: Small, red, four-legged creatures that resemble an octopus.
- Behavior: Octoroks move erratically across the screen, occasionally stopping to spit a single rock projectile in Link's direction. Their movement can be unpredictable, making direct sword attacks sometimes challenging.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: A single hit from Link's starting Wooden Sword is enough to defeat a Red Octorok.
- Boomerang: Can stun them temporarily, allowing for an easy sword strike.
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Drops: Occasionally drop Rupees (usually 1 or 5) or Hearts.
- Strategy: Approach with caution, anticipating their rock projectiles. A well-timed sword thrust is usually sufficient. If you have the Boomerang, use it to stun them before moving in for the kill.
Tektite
These spider-like creatures are agile jumpers, often found in mountainous or rocky regions of Hyrule.
- Appearance: Blue, four-legged creatures that move by jumping.
- Behavior: Tektites move by making large, arcing jumps across the screen. They do not fire projectiles but can damage Link by contact. Their unpredictable jump patterns can make them difficult to hit for new players.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires two hits from the Wooden Sword.
- Boomerang: Can stun them, making them easier targets.
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Try to anticipate their landing spots. A good strategy is to wait for them to land, then quickly move in for an attack. The Boomerang is very effective for stunning them mid-jump.
Moblin
Pig-faced humanoids that patrol various areas of the overworld, often guarding paths or secrets.
- Appearance: Large, pig-like creatures, usually brown or blue.
- Behavior: Moblins patrol set paths and will charge at Link if he enters their line of sight. They wield spears, which they can thrust forward to attack.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Brown Moblins take two hits, Blue Moblins take four hits from the Wooden Sword.
- Boomerang: Can stun them.
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Moblins are straightforward attackers. Keep your distance and attack as they approach. The Magical Sword makes quick work of them.
Armos
Stone statues that come to life when Link approaches, often found guarding entrances or items.
- Appearance: Grey, blocky stone statues.
- Behavior: Initially appear as inanimate statues. When Link touches them or walks near them, they animate and begin to hop towards him. They are relentless once activated.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires multiple hits (4 for Wooden Sword).
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them. This is often the most efficient method.
- Magic Rod: Effective if you have it.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: If you have Bombs, use them. Otherwise, try to hit them from the side or behind as they hop past you. Be careful not to get cornered. Sometimes, it's best to simply avoid activating them if possible.
Peahat
Large, flying plant-like creatures that are invulnerable when airborne.
- Appearance: Large, green, spinning objects that float in the air.
- Behavior: Peahats float around, invulnerable to Link's attacks. Periodically, they will land, becoming vulnerable for a short time, then take off again. They damage Link on contact.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Only vulnerable when landed. Requires multiple hits (4 for Wooden Sword).
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them when landed.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Wait patiently for them to land. Once they do, rush in for sword attacks or drop a Bomb. The Magical Sword makes this process much faster.
Zola
Aquatic creatures that emerge from the water to spit fireballs.
- Appearance: Green, fish-like creatures with a distinct head.
- Behavior: Zolas are found in bodies of water. They periodically surface, spit a fireball in Link's direction, and then submerge. They are only vulnerable when surfaced.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires two hits from the Wooden Sword.
- Boomerang: Can stun them when surfaced.
- Arrows: A well-aimed arrow can defeat them quickly.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Stand on the shore and wait for them to surface. Attack with your sword or, for a safer approach, use your Bow and Arrow. Be mindful of their fireballs, which can deal significant damage.
Ghini
Ghostly enemies that appear in graveyards.
- Appearance: White, sheet-like ghosts.
- Behavior: In the graveyard, most gravestones are inert. However, one specific gravestone in each screen will spawn a Ghini when touched. Once one Ghini is active, other gravestones on the same screen can also become active Ghinis if touched. They pursue Link relentlessly.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires multiple hits (8 for Wooden Sword).
- Magic Wand/Book of Magic: Can defeat them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Ghinis are tough and take many hits. The best strategy is often to identify the "real" Ghini (the one that spawns first from a specific gravestone) and defeat it, as this will cause all other active Ghinis on the screen to disappear. If you don't know which one is real, it's often better to avoid the graveyard entirely until you have stronger weapons or the Magic Wand.
Lynel
Centaur-like beasts, among the toughest overworld enemies. They are often found guarding valuable items or paths.
- Appearance: Large, centaur-like creatures with a lion's head and a human-like torso, wielding a sword. They can be red or blue.
- Behavior: Lynels move quickly and aggressively, firing sword beams at Link if he is at a distance, and attacking with their sword up close. They are highly dangerous.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires many hits (8 for Wooden Sword, 4 for White Sword, 2 for Magical Sword).
- Arrows: Highly effective, especially Silver Arrows.
- Magic Rod: Can be useful.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Lynels are a significant threat. Avoid them early in the game. Once you have the White Sword or, ideally, the Magical Sword, they become more manageable. The best strategy is to get close enough to hit them with your sword, then quickly retreat to avoid their counter-attack. If you have the Blue Ring or Red Ring, their damage output is reduced. Silver Arrows are devastating against them, especially the blue variants.
Darknut
Heavily armored knights, found exclusively in dungeons, known for their impenetrable defense.
- Appearance: Large, armored knights, either blue or red.
- Behavior: Darknuts are covered in thick armor that makes them invulnerable to frontal attacks. They will relentlessly pursue Link.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Only vulnerable from the back or sides. Blue Darknuts take 4 hits from the Wooden Sword, Red Darknuts take 8.
- Bombs: Can damage them regardless of direction.
- Magic Rod: Can damage them regardless of direction.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: The key to defeating Darknuts is to get behind them. This often involves baiting them into turning or using their movement patterns to your advantage. The Boomerang can temporarily stun them, allowing you to reposition for a back attack. The Magic Boomerang is even better for this. Bombs and the Magic Rod are excellent alternatives if you struggle with positioning.
Wizzrobe
Magicians that teleport and cast spells, found in later dungeons.
- Appearance: Robed figures, either red or blue.
- Behavior: Wizzrobes appear, cast a spell (either a single beam or a spread of three projectiles), and then disappear, only to reappear elsewhere. They are invulnerable while disappearing and reappearing.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Only vulnerable when visible. Red Wizzrobes take 2 hits from the Wooden Sword, Blue Wizzrobes take 4.
- Magic Rod: Can be effective.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Anticipate their reappearance points. They often follow predictable patterns. Position yourself to strike as soon as they materialize. The Magical Sword makes quick work of them. The Magical Shield can block their projectiles, making encounters safer.
Like Like
Blob-like creatures that can eat Link's Magical Shield.
- Appearance: Large, white, cylindrical blobs.
- Behavior: Like Likes move slowly but will attempt to engulf Link. If they succeed, they will steal his Magical Shield (if he has it).
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires multiple hits (4 for Wooden Sword).
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts. If they stole your shield, they will drop it upon defeat.
- Strategy: Avoid being touched by a Like Like at all costs, especially if you have the Magical Shield. Use your sword to keep them at bay, or ideally, use a Bomb for a quick and safe kill. If your shield is stolen, defeat the Like Like immediately to retrieve it.
Bubble
Invulnerable, flaming skulls that curse Link.
- Appearance: Floating, flaming skulls, either red or blue.
- Behavior: Bubbles float around dungeon rooms. They are invulnerable to all attacks. If a Bubble touches Link, he will be "cursed," preventing him from using his sword for a short period.
- Weaknesses: None (invulnerable to damage).
- Drops: None.
- Strategy: Avoid them! If you are touched by a Bubble, you will need to either wait for the curse to wear off or use the Fairy item to instantly cure it. Alternatively, you can touch a Blue Bubble to remove the curse from a Red Bubble, or vice-versa.
Wallmaster
Giant hands that emerge from dungeon walls to drag Link back to the entrance.
- Appearance: A disembodied, giant hand.
- Behavior: Wallmasters emerge from the walls of specific dungeon rooms. If they grab Link, they will drag him back to the dungeon's entrance, forcing him to restart the current section.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires multiple hits (4 for Wooden Sword).
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Listen for the distinct sound they make when they appear. Move quickly to avoid their grasp. If you hear them, try to stay in the center of the room. They are vulnerable to sword attacks, but Bombs are a safer option if you can place one in their path.
Goriya
Dog-like creatures that throw boomerangs, found in dungeons.
- Appearance: Dog-like creatures, either red or blue, wielding boomerangs.
- Behavior: Goriyas walk around dungeon rooms and throw their boomerang, which returns to them. They can damage Link with both the boomerang and by contact.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Red Goriyas take 2 hits from the Wooden Sword, Blue Goriyas take 4.
- Boomerang: Can stun them.
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Be mindful of their boomerang, which can hit you on its return path. Attack them directly with your sword, or use your own Boomerang to stun them before moving in for the kill.
Stalfos
Skeletal warriors found in dungeons.
- Appearance: Animated skeletons, often wielding swords.
- Behavior: Stalfos move erratically and attack with a sword. They are relatively slow but can be persistent.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires two hits from the Wooden Sword.
- Boomerang: Can stun them.
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Stalfos are fairly basic enemies. Use your sword to defeat them. The Boomerang can help control groups.
Keese
Bat-like creatures found in dungeons and caves.
- Appearance: Small, black bats.
- Behavior: Keese fly around in erratic patterns, often in groups. They damage Link on contact.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: A single hit from any sword.
- Boomerang: Can stun them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Keese are weak but their erratic movement can make them annoying. Swing your sword widely to hit them as they fly past. The Magical Sword's beam attack can clear them out quickly if you have full health.
Vire
Demon-like creatures that split into Keese when defeated.
- Appearance: Small, red, winged demons.
- Behavior: Vires fly around the room. When defeated, they split into two Keese, which must also be defeated.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires 2 hits from the Wooden Sword.
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts (from the Keese they split into).
- Strategy: Treat Vires as a two-stage enemy. Defeat the Vire, then quickly deal with the two Keese it spawns. The Magical Sword's beam attack is very effective here.
Rope
Snake-like creatures that charge at Link.
- Appearance: Green, snake-like creatures.
- Behavior: Ropes move slowly until Link is in their horizontal or vertical line of sight, at which point they will charge directly at him.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: A single hit from any sword.
- Boomerang: Can stun them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Be aware of their charging behavior. If you see one line up with Link, be ready to strike or move out of the way. They are easily defeated with a single sword hit.
Pols Voice
Rabbit-like creatures that are vulnerable to sound.
- Appearance: Green, rabbit-like creatures with large ears.
- Behavior: Pols Voices hop around dungeon rooms. They are resistant to most attacks.
- Weaknesses:
- Flute/Whistle: The most effective way to defeat them. Playing the Flute will instantly clear all Pols Voices from the screen.
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Arrows: Can defeat them, but requires multiple arrows and is less efficient than the Flute or Bombs.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: If you have the Flute, use it! It's the easiest way to deal with them. Otherwise, Bombs are your next best option. Save your Arrows for other enemies if possible.
Gels
Small, weak blobs that often appear in groups.
- Appearance: Small, blue or red blobs.
- Behavior: Gels move slowly and erratically. They are very weak.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: A single hit from any sword.
- Boomerang: Can stun them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts.
- Strategy: Gels are more of a nuisance than a threat. Simply swing your sword to clear them out.
Zol
Larger blobs that split into Gels when defeated.
- Appearance: Larger, green or red blobs.
- Behavior: Zols move slowly. When defeated, they split into two Gels, which must also be defeated.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Requires 2 hits from the Wooden Sword.
- Bombs: Instantly defeats them.
- Drops: Can drop Rupees or Hearts (from the Gels they split into).
- Strategy: Similar to Vires, Zols are a two-stage enemy. Defeat the Zol, then quickly deal with the two Gels it spawns.
Dungeon Bosses and Mini-Bosses
Each of the nine dungeons in Hyrule houses a formidable boss, often preceded by a challenging mini-boss. These encounters require specific strategies and sometimes particular items to overcome.
Gohma
A giant, one-eyed crab-like creature, often found as a dungeon boss.
- Appearance: A large, red, crab-like creature with a single eye.
- Behavior: Gohma moves left and right across the top of the screen. Its eye will periodically open. When open, it is vulnerable. It may also drop small, crab-like spawn.
- Weaknesses:
- Arrows: The only way to damage Gohma is to shoot an arrow into its open eye.
- Strategy: Equip your Bow and Arrows. Stand directly below Gohma and wait for its eye to open. Fire an arrow into its eye. It takes three arrows to defeat Red Gohma (Level 2) and one arrow to defeat Blue Gohma (Level 8). Be mindful of any smaller enemies it might spawn.
Manhandla
A multi-mouthed plant creature, often found as a dungeon boss.
- Appearance: A central body with four mouths on stalks, moving erratically.
- Behavior: Manhandla moves quickly around the room. Each of its four mouths can be destroyed. It damages Link on contact.
- Weaknesses:
- Bombs: The most effective way to defeat Manhandla. A well-placed bomb can destroy multiple mouths at once.
- Sword: Can destroy individual mouths, but is risky due to Manhandla's speed.
- Strategy: Equip Bombs. Try to anticipate Manhandla's movements and place a bomb directly in its path, aiming to hit multiple mouths. If you can destroy three of its mouths, the fourth will be very vulnerable to a final bomb or sword strike.
Digdogger
A spiky, rolling creature that can only be damaged by sound.
- Appearance: A large, spiky ball.
- Behavior: Digdogger rolls around the room. It is invulnerable in its large form.
- Weaknesses:
- Flute/Whistle: Playing the Flute will cause Digdogger to shrink into three smaller versions.
- Sword: Once shrunk, the smaller Digdoggers are vulnerable to sword attacks.
- Strategy: The Flute is mandatory for this boss. Play the Flute to shrink Digdogger. Once it splits into three smaller versions, quickly defeat them with your sword. They are still dangerous and will damage Link on contact.
Dodongo
A rhinoceros-like creature with thick hide, vulnerable to bombs.
- Appearance: A large, grey, rhinoceros-like creature.
- Behavior: Dodongo walks around the room. Its thick hide makes it invulnerable to sword attacks.
- Weaknesses:
- Bombs: The only way to damage Dodongo. Link must place a bomb in front of Dodongo's mouth when it opens, causing it to swallow the bomb.
- Strategy: Equip Bombs. Wait for Dodongo to open its mouth (it usually does this when it changes direction or pauses). Place a bomb directly in front of its mouth. It takes two swallowed bombs to defeat a Dodongo. Be careful not to get trampled.
Gleeok
A multi-headed dragon, a recurring boss in several dungeons.
- Appearance: A large, dragon-like creature with multiple heads (two, three, or four depending on the dungeon).
- Behavior: Gleeok remains stationary. Each head breathes fire. When a head is defeated, it detaches and floats around the room, continuing to breathe fire.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Each head must be attacked with the sword until it is defeated.
- Strategy: Focus on one head at a time. Get close, attack with your sword, and retreat to avoid its fire breath. Once a head detaches, it becomes an additional threat, so be prepared to dodge multiple fireballs. The Magical Shield can block fireballs. The Red Ring or Blue Ring will significantly reduce the damage taken.
Lanmola
A segmented worm-like creature that burrows through sand.
- Appearance: A large, segmented worm, often found in desert-themed dungeons.
- Behavior: Lanmola burrows through the sand, surfacing periodically to attack. It is only vulnerable when surfaced.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Attack its head when it surfaces.
- Bombs: Can also damage it when surfaced.
- Strategy: Anticipate where Lanmola will surface. Position yourself to strike its head as soon as it appears. Keep moving to avoid its attacks.
Aquamentus
A green, unicorn-like dragon, often the first boss encountered.
- Appearance: A green, horned dragon.
- Behavior: Aquamentus moves slowly across the screen, firing three fireballs in a spread pattern.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Attack its head.
- Arrows: Highly effective, especially when aimed at its head.
- Strategy: Aquamentus is a relatively simple boss. Get close and attack its head with your sword, dodging its fireballs. Alternatively, stand at a distance and use your Bow and Arrows for a safer approach.
Patra
A central eye surrounded by smaller flying eyes.
- Appearance: A large central eye with smaller, flying eyes orbiting it.
- Behavior: Patra's smaller eyes fly in formation around the central eye. Link must destroy all the smaller eyes before the central eye becomes vulnerable.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Attack the smaller eyes, then the central eye.
- Bombs: Can destroy multiple smaller eyes.
- Strategy: Focus on destroying the smaller eyes first. Use wide sword swings or strategically placed bombs to clear them out. Once all smaller eyes are gone, attack the central eye relentlessly with your sword.
Ganon
The King of Evil, the final boss of the game.
- Appearance: Initially appears as an invisible, teleporting demon. Later, reveals his true, pig-like form.
- Behavior: Ganon teleports around the room, firing fireballs. He is invisible for much of the fight.
- Weaknesses:
- Sword: Only vulnerable after being hit by the Silver Arrow.
- Silver Arrow: Required to make Ganon vulnerable.
- Strategy: This is a multi-stage fight.
- Invisible Phase: Ganon teleports rapidly. You must hit him with your sword when he briefly materializes and flashes. He will take many hits.
- Vulnerable Phase: After enough sword hits (usually 8 from the Magical Sword), Ganon will turn dark and become stunned for a moment. This is your window to quickly switch to the Silver Arrow and fire it at him.
- Defeat: A single Silver Arrow hit in his vulnerable state will defeat Ganon.
