Introduction to Hyrule
Welcome, brave adventurer, to the mystical land of Hyrule! As Link, your journey begins in a perilous world overrun by Ganon's forces. This introductory section will guide you through your very first steps, ensuring you're properly equipped to face the challenges ahead.
Your First Steps: The Sword and Shield
Upon starting a new game, you'll find yourself in a desolate, rocky area. Your immediate priority is to acquire your first weapon. Without it, even the weakest Octorok can pose a significant threat.
- Acquiring the Wooden Sword:
- From your starting position, move one screen to the left.
- You will see a cave entrance. Enter the cave.
- Inside, an Old Man will greet you with the iconic words, "IT'S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE! TAKE THIS." He will then bestow upon you the Wooden Sword. This is your primary weapon for the early game.
- Acquiring the Wooden Shield:
- After obtaining the Wooden Sword, exit the cave.
- From the cave entrance, move one screen down.
- You will encounter a shop. Enter the shop.
- Inside, you can purchase the Wooden Shield for 30 Rupees. If you don't have enough Rupees, you'll need to defeat some enemies first.
While the sword is essential for offense, a shield is crucial for defense against projectiles. The Wooden Shield can deflect rocks from Octoroks and fireballs from some other enemies.
Gathering Rupees and Hearts
Rupees are the currency of Hyrule, vital for purchasing essential items. Hearts represent your life force; collecting Heart Containers or Heart Pieces will increase your maximum health, making you more resilient.
- Early Rupee Farming:
- From the shop, move one screen up, then one screen right.
- This screen often has several Octoroks. Engage them carefully, using your newly acquired Wooden Sword.
- Each defeated enemy has a chance to drop a Rupee (blue, worth 1) or a Heart (restores 1 unit of health).
- Continue to explore the immediate surrounding screens, defeating enemies until you have at least 30 Rupees for the Wooden Shield, if you haven't bought it already.
- Finding Heart Containers:
- The first full Heart Container will be awarded upon completing the first dungeon, Level 1: Eagle.
- Keep an eye out for suspicious bushes, rocks, or lone trees – some may hide secret passages to Heart Pieces or other valuable items. We'll cover specific locations in later sections.
After acquiring your sword, your best bet for early Rupees is to defeat enemies. Octoroks and Tektites are common in the starting areas and often drop Rupees or occasionally a Heart.
Full Heart Containers are typically found at the end of dungeons, significantly boosting your survivability. However, there are also hidden Heart Pieces scattered throughout Hyrule that combine to form a full Heart Container.
Initial Exploration and Strategy
Hyrule is vast and non-linear, but a strategic approach to your initial exploration will serve you well.
- Understanding the Overworld Map:
- Enemy Encounters:
- Octoroks: These octopus-like creatures spit rocks. Block with your shield or approach quickly to strike.
- Tektites: Spider-like enemies that hop. Time your attacks between their jumps.
- Moblins: Pig-like enemies that shoot arrows. Their arrows can be blocked.
- Conserving Health:
- The Importance of the Compass:
The game doesn't provide an in-game map of the overworld initially. It's crucial to familiarize yourself with the layout. The starting area is relatively central. Remember key landmarks like the old man's cave and the shop.
Early on, every heart counts. Avoid unnecessary damage. If you're low on health, try to find enemies that drop hearts, or locate a Fairy Fountain (often found under specific rocks or in caves) to fully restore your health.
While not immediately available, the Compass, found within dungeons, will reveal the location of the dungeon's boss and the Triforce piece on your mini-map, making navigation much easier.
With your Wooden Sword and Shield in hand, and a basic understanding of your surroundings, you are now ready to venture forth into the perilous world of Hyrule. Your next objective should be to prepare for and locate the first dungeon, Level 1: Eagle.
