Second Quest Differences
Welcome, seasoned hero, to the Second Quest! If you've made it this far, you've already proven your mettle against Ganon once. But don't expect a simple replay; the Second Quest is a complete overhaul of Hyrule, designed to challenge even the most experienced adventurers. Dungeons are redesigned, item locations are shuffled, and enemies are often tougher and more numerous from the outset. This section will guide you through the initial, crucial steps of this new, more perilous journey.
Starting Out: The Great Plateau (and Beyond)
Just like your first adventure, you begin with a simple Wooden Sword. However, the familiar cave entrance is now blocked. Your first task is to find a new path and acquire essential gear.
- Initial Sword Upgrade: Head one screen right from your starting position. You'll find a cave containing an Old Man who will gift you the White Sword. This is a vital early upgrade, as the Wooden Sword will be largely ineffective against the tougher enemies you'll soon encounter.
- Shield Acquisition: Next, travel two screens north from your starting point. Here, you'll discover another cave. Inside, an Old Man will provide you with the Magical Shield. This shield offers superior protection against projectiles compared to the standard Shield you might remember.
- First Heart Container: From the Magical Shield cave, go one screen right, then one screen up. You'll find a hidden cave (often disguised by a single bush or tree). Inside awaits your first Heart Container, boosting your health significantly.
Dungeon 1: The Eagle's Roost (Level 1)
Forget everything you knew about the first dungeon. The Eagle's Roost is a completely new layout with different challenges and rewards. The entrance is located two screens right and one screen up from your starting point (the same general area as the first dungeon in the original quest, but the path is different).
Key Differences and Strategies:
- Layout: The dungeon's structure is a maze of interconnected rooms, often requiring you to backtrack or find hidden passages. Pay close attention to bombable walls and pushable blocks.
- Enemies: Expect to encounter tougher enemies earlier, such as Darknuts or even Wizzrobes, in rooms where you might have only seen Octoroks or Moblins before. Prioritize taking them out quickly to conserve health.
- Compass Location: The Compass is crucial for navigating the new layouts. In this dungeon, you'll find it in a room accessible by bombing a wall in the central eastern part of the dungeon.
- Map Location: The Map is located in the northwestern section of the dungeon, often behind a locked door. Ensure you have a key or find a hidden path.
- Boomerang: The Boomerang is still a valuable item for stunning enemies and retrieving distant items. It's found in a room in the southern half of the dungeon, often guarded by a group of Stalfos.
- Boss: The boss of Level 1 is a familiar foe, but the arena might be different. Utilize your White Sword and any collected Heart Containers to defeat it.
- Triforce Piece: As always, defeating the boss will grant you the first piece of the Triforce of Wisdom.
Essential Early Purchases
With your initial sword and shield, it's time to stock up on vital supplies. Rupees are more important than ever, as many crucial items are now store-bought.
- Candle: Head to the shop located one screen left and one screen up from your starting point. Purchase the Blue Candle for 60 Rupees. This is essential for lighting dark rooms in dungeons and revealing hidden passages.
- Bomb Bag Upgrade: While bombs are found in dungeons, consider saving up for the Bomb Bag upgrade if you find a shop selling it early. More bombs are always a good idea in the Second Quest.
- Potions: Always keep at least one Life Potion on hand. The increased difficulty means you'll take more damage, and a quick heal can be the difference between life and death.
Remember, exploration is key in the Second Quest. Many secrets and hidden caves have been moved or added. Don't be afraid to experiment with bombs on suspicious walls or push blocks in seemingly empty rooms. Good luck, hero!
