Attributes
Shape your character's destiny in The Outer Worlds by carefully allocating points to your core Attributes during creation. These foundational stats influence your skills, combat effectiveness, and dialogue options, setting the stage for your entire playthrough.
Character creation in The Outer Worlds is more than just cosmetic; it's about defining the core capabilities of your protagonist. The game features six primary Attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Endurance, Intelligence, Perception, and Charisma. Each Attribute has a direct impact on a set of related Skills, and also provides passive bonuses or penalties. Understanding these Attributes is crucial for building a character that als with your desired playstyle.
The Six Core Attributes:
- Strength: Primarily influences your melee damage and your ability to carry more items (carrying capacity). Higher Strength also contributes to your effectiveness with heavy weapons.
- Dexterity: Affects your ranged weapon damage, reload speed, and your ability to dodge attacks. It's a key attribute for any character focused on firearms.
- Endurance: Determines your maximum health and your resistance to damage. A higher Endurance means you can withstand more punishment before falling.
- Intelligence: This attribute governs your skill with science weapons, your hacking ability, and your overall effectiveness with TTD (Tactical Time Dilation). It also influences dialogue options related to technical knowledge.
- Perception: Impacts your critical hit chance, your ability to detect enemies at a distance, and your effectiveness with sniper rifles and other precision weapons. It also influences dialogue options related to observation and insight.
- Charisma: This is your social attribute. It affects your persuasion, deception, and intimidation dialogue options, as well as the effectiveness of your companions in combat. High Charisma allows you to talk your way out of many situations.
Attribute Allocation and Skills:
When you create your character, you'll have a pool of points to distribute among these Attributes. The higher an Attribute's score, the more points are added to its associated Skills. For example, increasing Strength will boost your Melee and Heavy Weapons skills. Similarly, increasing Intelligence will boost your Science and Hacking skills.
Skill Tiers and Bonuses:
Each Skill is grouped under one of the six Attributes. As you invest points into an Attribute, you unlock higher tiers of its associated Skills. Reaching certain thresholds in these Skills grants passive bonuses. For instance, reaching a high level in the Handguns skill (under Dexterity) might unlock a bonus that increases critical hit damage with pistols.
Dialogue and Attribute Checks:
Many dialogue options in The Outer Worlds are tied to your Attributes and Skills. A high Charisma score might unlock a 'Persuade' option, allowing you to convince an NPC without resorting to violence. A high Intelligence might unlock a 'Technical' option, providing a more informed response. These checks add sificant replayability and allow for diverse problem-solving.
Companion Synergies:
Your companions also have their own Attributes and Skills. While you can't directly change them, understanding how your own Attributes complement theirs can be beneficial. For example, if you have a high Charisma character, you might pair them with companions who excel in combat to cover your weaknesses.
Starting Attribute Recommendations:
- For Combat Focus: Prioritize Dexterity and Strength for ranged and melee combat respectively, with Endurance for survivability.
- For Dialogue Focus: Maximize Charisma to unlock many persuasive and deceptive options.
- For Tech/Stealth Focus: Invest in Intelligence for hacking and science weapons, and Perception for critical hits and ranged accuracy.
Respeccing Attributes:
while you can respec your Skills and Perks later in the game, your initial Attribute allocation is permanent. Therefore, it's crucial to think carefully about your desired build from the outset.
