Tinkering

Tinkering is an essential system in The Outer Worlds that allows you to upgrade your weapons and armor, sificantly enhancing your combat effectiveness and survivability. By investing resources and Bits, you can improve your gear's stats, add new damage types, and unlock powerful passive bonuses, making every piece of equipment more valuable.

You'll encounter workbenches scattered throughout the game world, from your ship, The Unreliable, to various settlements and outposts. Interacting with a workbench brings up the Tinkering menu, where you can select your equipped gear or items in your inventory to modify. Tinkering requires two main resources: Bits (the in-game currency) and Crafting Components.

The Tinkering Interface:

When you select an item to tinker with, you'll see its current stats and a list of available upgrade slots. Each slot represents a potential improvement or modification. The cost of each upgrade, in both Bits and components, will be displayed. As you upgrade an item, its level increases, and so do its base stats.

Upgrade Tiers and Item Levels:

Items have a base level, and each time you tinker with them, their level increases. This process also increases their damage (for weapons) or armor rating (for armor). However, there's a limit to how much you can upgrade an item. To continue upgrading an item beyond a certain point, you'll need to increase its level to match your character's current level. This is done by selecting the 'Increase Item Level' option, which consumes a sificant amount of Bits and components.

Weapon Mods:

Weapons can be modified to add new damage types or special effects. These mods are often categorized by damage type:

  • Plasma: Effective against biological targets, can cause burning.
  • Shock: Effective against mechanical targets, can stun.
  • Corrosive: Effective against armor, can weaken defenses.
  • N-Ray: Deals damage over time and can spread to nearby enemies.

Other weapon mods might include scopes for increased accuracy, extended magazines for more ammo, or silencers for stealth. The availability of specific mods depends on the weapon type and rarity.

Armor Mods:

Armor can also be modified to improve its defensive capabilities and provide passive bonuses. These might include:

  • Increased Resistances: Boosts your defense against specific damage types (e.g., Physical, Plasma, Shock).
  • Stat Bonuses: Small increases to your character's attributes or skills.
  • Perk-Related Bonuses: Some armor mods can enhance the effects of certain perks.

Crafting Components:

You'll find several crafting components throughout the game, such as Scrap Metal, Wire, and various chemicals. These are essential for performing upgrades. It's crucial to loot everything you can, as these components are often scarce, especially in the early game. You can also break down unwanted items into their constituent components at a workbench.

Strategic Tinkering:

  • Prioritize Your Best Gear: Focus your resources on upgrading your favorite weapons and armor.
  • Match Damage Types to Enemies: If you're facing a lot of mechanical enemies, consider adding Shock damage to your weapons. If you're up against heavily armored foes, Corrosive damage is beneficial.
  • Don't Neglect Armor: While offensive upgrades are tempting, don't underestimate the importance of good armor. Staying alive is paramount.

By understanding and using the Tinkering system effectively, you'll ensure your gear remains relevant and powerful throughout your entire journey in The Outer Worlds.
