Key Items & Quest Items
Throughout your journey across Halcyon, you'll encounter several unique items that aren't just for selling or equipping. These "Key Items" and "Quest Items" are crucial for advancing storylines, unlocking new areas, or completing specific objectives. Unlike standard inventory items, you generally cannot drop or sell these, and they often have a dedicated section in your inventory. This guide will detail some of the most important key and quest items, their locations, and how to use them effectively.
Early Game Essentials (Terra-2 & The Unreliable)
- Navkey: Edgewater
- Location: Acquired automatically from Phineas Welles at the very beginning of the game, after you awaken from cryo-sleep on his lab.
- Purpose: Essential for piloting your ship, The Unreliable, to Edgewater on Terra-2. Without this, you're stuck in orbit.
- Actionable Step: After receiving it, proceed to The Unreliable's bridge and interact with the navigation console to plot a course for Edgewater.
- Power Regulator
- Location: Found in the Botanical Lab, specifically in the locked office of Dr. M.P. Fenhill. You'll need to either pick the lock (requires high Lockpicking skill) or find the keycard on a nearby corpse.
- Purpose: Required to restore power to Edgewater and complete the main quest "Comes Now the Power." This item is central to deciding the fate of Edgewater and its inhabitants.
- Actionable Step: Once acquired, you have a choice:
- Install it at the Geothermal Power Plant to power Edgewater, siding with Reed Tobson.
- Install it at the Botanical Lab to power the Deserters, siding with Adelaide McDevitt.
- (Optional) You can also reroute power from one location to the other after the initial installation, but the Regulator itself is the primary component.
- Sprat Wurst Recipe
- Location: Can be found in various containers and on enemies in the Emerald Vale, particularly around Edgewater. It's a common drop.
- Purpose: While not strictly a "quest item" in the traditional sense, this recipe is a key item for unlocking a specific dialogue option with Parvati Holcomb, allowing her to craft Sprat Wurst for you, which provides a temporary stat boost.
- Actionable Step: Once you have the recipe, talk to Parvati on The Unreliable. A dialogue option will appear, allowing you to give her the recipe. She will then occasionally offer you Sprat Wurst.
Later Game & Faction-Specific Items
- Mona's Journal
- Location: Found in the Monarch Wilderness, specifically within the Stellar Bay ruins, often in a dilapidated building or on a fallen Spacer.
- Purpose: This journal is a key item for the companion quest "The Empty Man" for Felix. It provides crucial information about his past and his connection to Mona.
- Actionable Step: Pick up the journal and then speak with Felix on The Unreliable. Presenting him with the journal will advance his personal questline.
- SubLight Data Cartridge
- Location: Acquired during the "Slaughterhouse Clive" quest, typically found on Clive Lumbergh's corpse or in his office within the C&P Boarst Factory on Monarch.
- Purpose: This data cartridge contains incriminating evidence against Clive Lumbergh, which can be used to either expose him to Catherine Malin of SubLight Salvage & Shipping or to leverage for your own gain.
- Actionable Step: Deliver the cartridge to Catherine Malin in Stellar Bay to complete the quest and earn SubLight reputation, or use it as leverage in other ways depending on your chosen path.
- Minister's Passkey
- Location: Obtained from Minister Clarke in Byzantium during the main quest "The City and the Stars." You'll typically get it after a conversation with him, often involving some persuasion or intimidation.
- Purpose: Grants access to restricted areas within Byzantium, particularly the Minister's Estate and other high-security zones, which are necessary to progress the main storyline.
- Actionable Step: Use the passkey on locked doors or terminals that require high-level authorization within Byzantium's secure districts.
Unique & Miscellaneous Key Items
- Phineas's Lab Keycard
- Location: Given to you by Phineas Welles himself, or found near his lab if you somehow manage to lose it. It's an early game item.
- Purpose: Provides access to Phineas Welles's hidden lab, which serves as a central hub for many main quests and companion interactions.
- Actionable Step: Use this keycard on the door to Phineas's lab on his asteroid base.
- Holographic Shroud
- Location: Acquired during the main quest "The Charybdis," typically given to you by a specific NPC or found in a secure area you need to infiltrate.
- Purpose: Allows you to temporarily disguise yourself as a member of a specific faction, enabling you to bypass security checkpoints and engage in stealthy infiltration. The disguise is temporary and breaks if you perform hostile actions or stay in restricted areas for too long.
- Actionable Step: Activate the Holographic Shroud from your inventory when entering a restricted zone where you need to blend in. Pay attention to the "Suspicion" meter that appears on your HUD.
Remember, always check your inventory's "Key Items" tab if you're stuck on a quest. The description of the item often provides a hint about its purpose or the next step you need to take. Many quests will automatically remove a key item from your inventory once its purpose is served, but some, like the Holographic Shroud, remain available for repeated use.
