Enemy Types & Weaknesses
Navigating the treacherous colonies of Halcyon requires more than just a quick trigger finger; understanding your adversaries is paramount to survival. This section details the common enemy types you'll encounter, their specific weaknesses, and recommended strategies to make short work of them.
Humanoid Threats
From corporate enforcers to desperate marauders, human enemies are a constant presence. While they often carry standard firearms, their tactics and armor can vary significantly.
- Marauders: These unorganized bandits are often found in groups. They typically wear light armor, making them vulnerable to most damage types.
- Weakness: Headshots are highly effective. use any weapon with a high critical hit chance. Energy weapons like the Plasma Carbine found early on in Edgewater (often dropped by marauders themselves) are excellent for melting their flimsy defenses.
- Strategy: Prioritize taking out ranged attackers first. Use companions like Parvati or Vicar Max to draw aggro while you flank and eliminate key targets. Consider using the Tactical Time Dilation (TTD) to line up multiple headshots on clustered enemies.
- Corporate Enforcers (Spacer's Choice, Auntie Cleo's, etc.): These well-equipped security forces often wear heavier armor and use more disciplined tactics.
- Weakness: While headshots are still effective, their armor can be a nuisance. Corrosive damage, from weapons like the Acid Spray (often found in labs or dropped by corporate scientists), is particularly potent against their metallic plating. Shock damage from weapons like the Shock Stick (a common melee weapon) can also stun them, opening them up for follow-up attacks.
- Strategy: Focus fire on individual targets to break through their defenses quickly. If facing heavily armored units, consider using grenades like the Frag Grenade (craftable or purchasable from vendors) to soften them up before engaging with firearms. Companions with high ranged damage, such as Felix or Ellie, can help whittle down their health from a distance.
Creature Threats
The untamed wilds of Halcyon are home to several dangerous fauna, each with unique behaviors and vulnerabilities.
- Raptidons: These aggressive, fast-moving creatures are common on Terra 2 and Monarch. They attack with sharp claws and teeth, often charging directly at you.
- Weakness: Raptidons are highly susceptible to Plasma damage. The Plasma Cutter, a unique melee weapon found in the Emerald Vale Community Center (near the crashed ship), is devastating against them. Additionally, their heads are a critical weak point.
- Strategy: Maintain distance if possible. Shotguns like the Hunting Shotgun (a common drop from human enemies) are excellent for staggering charging raptidons. If they get close, switch to a fast-firing weapon or a powerful melee attack. Companions with area-of-effect abilities, like Parvati's "Forced Accretion," can help control groups.
- Mantisaur: Larger, more heavily armored versions of raptidons, often encountered on Monarch. They possess powerful ranged attacks (spitting acid) in addition to their melee capabilities.
- Weakness: Like raptidons, Plasma damage is highly effective. Their armored carapace is tough, but sustained fire to their unarmored underbelly (when they rear up) or head can inflict significant damage. Corrosive damage is also effective against their tough hide.
- Strategy: Prioritize dodging their acid spit. Use cover to your advantage. If you have a sniper rifle like the Hunting Rifle (found in many early game areas), aim for their head during their attack animations. Consider using the Gloop Gun (found during the "The Distress Signal" quest on Monarch) for its unique energy damage and crowd control capabilities against these larger foes.
- Canids: Pack hunters found across various planets, these creatures are quick and can overwhelm you with numbers.
- Weakness: Canids have relatively low health and are vulnerable to most damage types. Shock damage can briefly stun them, interrupting their charges.
- Strategy: Focus on crowd control. Weapons with a high rate of fire, like the Light Machine Gun (often dropped by corporate enforcers), are excellent for cutting down multiple canids quickly. Companions with melee attacks, such as Felix, can help keep them off you.
Automaton Threats
The corporate-controlled robots of Halcyon pose a unique challenge, often boasting heavy armor and powerful energy weapons.
- Automechanicals (Standard, Heavy, Elite): These robotic sentries are found guarding corporate facilities and dangerous zones. They are heavily armored and often carry energy weapons.
- Weakness: Shock damage is their primary weakness. Weapons like the Shock Stick or the Shock Cannon (a unique heavy weapon found in the Byzantium maintenance tunnels) can quickly disable and destroy them. Corrosive damage is also effective against their metallic chassis. Their head/optical sensors are often a critical weak point.
- Strategy: Avoid direct confrontation if possible, especially with Heavy or Elite variants. Use cover extensively. Aim for their optical sensors or any exposed wiring. Companions like SAM, with his built-in corrosive spray, are invaluable against automatons. Consider using the Disabler (a utility item found in various corporate facilities) to temporarily shut them down, allowing for easy critical hits.
- Security Drones: Smaller, flying automatons often equipped with energy weapons. They are agile and can be difficult to hit.
- Weakness: Shock damage. Their small size makes them vulnerable to weapons with a wide spread, like shotguns, or precise single-shot weapons when using TTD.
- Strategy: Use TTD to slow them down and line up shots. A good sniper rifle or a high-accuracy pistol can take them down quickly. If they are in a group, consider using an explosive weapon like the Grenade Launcher (found in various military caches) to clear them out.
General Combat Tips
- Exploit Elemental Weaknesses: Always check an enemy's health bar for elemental vulnerability icons. A red icon indicates a strong weakness, while a yellow icon indicates a moderate one. Matching your weapon's damage type to these weaknesses will significantly increase your damage output.
- use Companions: Your companions are not just pack mules; they are invaluable in combat. Direct them to focus fire on specific targets, use their unique abilities, and leverage their damage types. For example, Parvati's shock damage is great against automatons, while Felix's melee attacks can keep raptidons at bay.
- Tactical Time Dilation (TTD): use TTD! It's your most powerful tool for targeting weak points, repositioning, and assessing the battlefield. Investing in the "Science" skill can enhance its effectiveness.
- Weapon Modding: Regularly mod your weapons to match the threats you anticipate. Adding a Corrosive Coating to a rifle before entering a corporate facility, or a Plasma Mod before exploring a raptidon-infested cave, can turn the tide of a difficult encounter. Mods can be purchased from vendors or found as loot.
- Consumables: Keep a stock of consumables like Adreno for health and N-Ray cartridges for N-Ray damage. N-Ray damage bypasses armor, making it effective against heavily armored foes.
