Endings & Consequences
The Outer Worlds offers a rich narrative with multiple branching paths, culminating in several distinct endings that reflect your choices throughout the Halcyon colony. Your final outcome is heavily influenced by who you side with, your companion relationships, and the resolutions of key quests. This section will detail the major ending paths and the critical decisions that lead to them.
The Grand Finale: Who Do You Support?
The overarching decision that dictates your ending is whether you align with Dr. Phineas Welles or the Halcyon Board. This choice is solidified during the quest "Foundation".
Siding with Dr. Phineas Welles (The Hope's Salvation)
Choosing to support Phineas Welles generally leads to an ending where the frozen colonists aboard the Hope are revived, and a new, more equitable society is envisioned for Halcyon. This path often involves challenging the Board's authority and disrupting their control over the colony.
- Key Decision Point: During the quest "Foundation", Phineas will ask you to retrieve the Master Key from Tartarus. Delivering this key to him directly, rather than to Sophia Akande, locks you into his storyline.
- Critical Quests & Actions:
- "The City and the Stars": Successfully navigate Byzantium and gather the necessary information or components for Phineas.
- "Kept Secret But Not Forgotten": Secure the targeting module from the Gorgon asteroid. Your choices here, particularly regarding the fate of the scientists, can subtly influence the epilogue.
- "Foundation": Infiltrate Tartarus and retrieve the Master Key. Be prepared for heavy resistance from Board forces.
- "Brave New World": The final confrontation at Tartarus. Your skills in combat, persuasion, or stealth will be tested.
- Impact on Halcyon:
- Hope's Fate: The colonists are successfully revived.
- Board's Influence: Significantly diminished, potentially leading to its collapse or a drastic restructuring.
- Colony's Future: A more hopeful, if uncertain, future where individual freedoms and scientific advancement are prioritized.
Siding with The Board (Halcyon's Order)
Aligning with the Halcyon Board results in an ending where the Board maintains its iron grip on the colony, often at the expense of individual liberties and the potential revival of the Hope's colonists. This path emphasizes order, corporate control, and the preservation of the existing power structure.
- Key Decision Point: During the quest "Foundation", after acquiring the Master Key, deliver it to Sophia Akande in Byzantium instead of returning it to Phineas. This action triggers the Board's final plan.
- Critical Quests & Actions:
- "The Charybdis": This quest becomes available if you consistently side with the Board. It involves eliminating key threats to their operations.
- "Foundation": Acquire the Master Key from Tartarus.
- "The Final Experiment": Sophia Akande will task you with directly confronting Phineas Welles. This involves infiltrating his lab and dealing with him.
- "The Labyrinth": The final mission where you help the Board secure their control over Halcyon.
- Impact on Halcyon:
- Hope's Fate: The colonists remain frozen, or their fate is left ambiguous, often implying their eventual demise.
- Board's Influence: Strengthened, with their control over the colony solidified.
- Colony's Future: A stable but oppressive future, where corporate interests dictate all aspects of life.
The Dumb/Low Intelligence Ending
A unique and often humorous ending path is available if your character has a consistently low Intelligence attribute (below 3). This path is not tied to a specific faction but rather to your character's overall cognitive abilities. Dialogue options will reflect your character's diminished intellect, and the final cutscene will be a distinct, often comical, narration of your "achievements."
- How to Achieve:
- During character creation, set your Intelligence to Below Average (1 point).
- Maintain this low Intelligence throughout the game. Avoid perks or equipment that significantly boost Intelligence.
- Consistently choose the "Dumb" dialogue options whenever they appear. These are usually clearly marked with a "Dumb" tag.
- Consequences: While the core narrative still progresses, the interpretation of events and your character's role in them will be drastically different in the epilogue. This ending is purely for comedic effect and does not significantly alter the political landscape of Halcyon beyond the standard faction endings.
Companion Endings & Their Influence
Each of your companions has their own personal questline. Completing these quests and making specific choices within them will determine their individual fates and their roles in the post-game epilogue. A fully completed companion questline generally leads to a more positive outcome for that companion.
- Parvati Holcomb: Her ending is influenced by the success of her romance with Junlei Tennyson (quest: "Don't Bite the Sun") and her overall outlook on life.
- Vicar Max: His spiritual journey (quest: "The Empty Man") and the choices you make regarding the philosophical text will determine his final path.
- Ellie Fenhill: Her relationship with her parents and her pursuit of wealth (quest: "The Charybdis") are key to her epilogue.
- Felix Millstone: His loyalty to you and his views on the Board (quest: "Friendship's Due") will shape his future.
- Nyoka Ramnarim-Wentworth: Her struggle with her past and her relationship with her community (quest: "Star-Crossed Troopers") are central to her ending.
- SAM: The cleaning bot's ending is less about personal growth and more about its continued function and impact on the Unreliable (quest: "The Cleaning Machine").
Important Note: The specific details of each companion's ending will also be colored by your overall faction alignment. For example, a companion who thrives under Board rule might have a less favorable outcome if you side with Phineas, and vice-versa.
Faction Reputations & Minor Endings
Beyond the major faction choice, your reputation with various minor factions and your resolution of their specific questlines will also be reflected in the final epilogue slides. These include:
- Edgewater & Spacer's Choice: Your decisions during "Comes Now the Power" and subsequent quests will determine the fate of Edgewater and its relationship with Spacer's Choice.
- Monarch & Stellar Bay: The resolution of the conflict between MSI and the Iconoclasts, and your choices regarding Graham and Sanjar, will have a significant impact on Monarch's future.
- SubLight Salvage & Shipping: Your dealings with Lilya Hagen and the criminal underworld will be noted.
- Groundbreaker: The state of the Groundbreaker and its leadership, particularly Junlei Tennyson, will be mentioned.
To ensure the most comprehensive and satisfying ending, strive to complete as many side quests as possible and make choices that align with your desired outcome for Halcyon. Remember, every action has a consequence in The Outer Worlds!
