Factions & Relationships
Navigating the treacherous streets of New Orleans means more than just fending off walkers; it means choosing sides and understanding the intricate web of alliances and animosities between the city's surviving factions. Your choices will directly impact available missions, resources, and even the ending you experience. This section will guide you through the major players and how to best manage your relationships with them.
The Tower
The Tower represents order, albeit a brutal one. Led by Mama, they control the most organized resources and often demand loyalty through force. Engaging with The Tower can provide access to valuable supplies and information, but at a moral cost.
- Initial Contact: Your first significant interaction with The Tower will be during the main story quest "The Tourist." You'll be directed to their stronghold in the Bywater.
- Gaining Favor: Completing missions for Casey, a key Tower operative, is the primary way to improve your standing. These often involve retrieving specific items or eliminating threats to their operations.
- Example Mission: "A Gift for Casey" requires you to find a Vintage Bottle of Wine. This can often be scavenged from higher-end residential areas like Via Corolla or The Ward. Delivering it will net you a significant reputation boost and some useful crafting materials.
- Example Mission: "Supply Run" tasks you with clearing out a walker infestation in a designated area, such as the Rampart Street market, and securing a Crate of Medical Supplies. Be prepared for heavy walker presence and potential rival faction encounters.
- Consequences of Hostility: Openly defying The Tower or attacking their patrols will lead to them becoming hostile. Tower guards will actively hunt you in areas they control, making scavenging significantly more dangerous. They are well-armed, often with AR-47s and 9mm Pistols, and wear protective gear.
The Reclaimed
The Reclaimed are a more anarchic, freedom-focused group, often clashing with The Tower's authoritarian rule. Led by May, they prioritize survival and community, though their methods can be just as ruthless. Aligning with The Reclaimed offers a different perspective on New Orleans and access to unique crafting recipes.
- Initial Contact: You'll encounter The Reclaimed early on, often through their patrols in areas like Old Town or The Shallows. Your first formal interaction will likely be during the "May's Request" questline.
- Gaining Favor: The Reclaimed value resourcefulness and direct action against The Tower.
- Example Mission: "Tower Sabotage" might require you to infiltrate a Tower outpost in The Ward and disable their comms array, often guarded by multiple Tower personnel. A stealthy approach with a Suppressed 9mm Pistol or a well-placed Smoke Grenade can be effective.
- Example Mission: "Walker Cull" involves clearing a large number of walkers from a specific zone, such as the Cemetery, to secure a safe passage for Reclaimed scavengers. Bringing a powerful melee weapon like the Nova Axe or a Shotgun is highly recommended.
- Consequences of Hostility: Attacking Reclaimed members or refusing their requests will lead to a hostile relationship. They will ambush you in contested zones, often using makeshift weapons and traps. Their numbers can be overwhelming, so avoid direct confrontation if possible.
Neutrality & Shifting Alliances
It is possible to maintain a delicate balance between both factions for a significant portion of the game. However, certain key story decisions will force your hand, leading to an inevitable alignment with one side or the other, or a path of complete independence.
- Observe and Exploit: Rival factions will often engage in gun battles when their patrols meet. You can use these encounters to your advantage by letting them thin each other out before moving in to scavenge the remains or eliminate the weakened survivors. This is particularly effective in high-traffic areas like Via Corolla.
- The Bell: A critical early decision involves the fate of the Church Bell. Your choice here will significantly impact your standing with both The Tower and The Reclaimed, and is one of the first major alignment points. Consider the long-term implications of who you empower.
- The Reserve: The ultimate prize, The Reserve, will be the focal point of the endgame. Your relationship with both factions will determine who, if anyone, aids you in accessing it, and what kind of resistance you face.
Remember, every action has a reaction in New Orleans. Choose your allies wisely, or prepare to face the consequences alone.
