Base Camp Upgrades & Management
Your bus serves as your central hub, a safe haven where you can craft, store resources, and prepare for your next excursion into the infected streets of New Orleans. Efficiently managing and upgrading your base camp is crucial for survival, allowing you to craft better gear, carry more loot, and ultimately, face tougher challenges.
The Crafting Benches: Your Lifeline
There are three primary crafting benches in your bus, each vital for different aspects of your survival. Upgrading these benches is paramount to unlocking higher-tier recipes and improving your overall capabilities.
1. The Crafting Bench (Weapons & Tools)
This bench is your go-to for all things combat and utility. From shivs to shotguns, and bandages to backpacks, the Crafting Bench is where you'll spend a significant amount of your time and resources.
- Upgrade Tiers: Each upgrade tier unlocks new, more powerful weapons, durable tools, and larger storage options.
- Tier 1 (Starting): Basic melee weapons (e.g., Shiv, Baton), simple tools (e.g., Bandage, Makeshift Backpack).
- Tier 2: Requires a moderate amount of common resources. Unlocks more effective melee weapons (e.g., Cleaver, Katana), basic firearms (e.g., 9mm Pistol), and the Standard Backpack.
- Tier 3: Demands rarer resources and a higher scrap investment. Unlocks advanced firearms (e.g., Shotgun, Lever-Action Rifle), explosives (e.g., Grenade), and the Large Backpack.
- Tier 4 (Max): The final upgrade, requiring significant rare materials. Grants access to the most powerful weapons (e.g., AR-416, The Judge), advanced medical supplies (e.g., Medical Kit), and the Military Backpack.
- Key Upgrade Materials:
- Scrap: The most fundamental resource. Found everywhere, but always in demand. Prioritize collecting it.
- Mechanical Parts: Essential for weapon upgrades. Look for these in mechanical devices, old cars, and toolboxes.
- Electrical Parts: Crucial for advanced tools and some weapon modifications. Scavenge from electronics, radios, and broken appliances.
- Chemicals: Necessary for medical supplies and explosives. Found in bathrooms, hospitals, and laboratories.
- Wood: Used for handles and some weapon components. Abundant in residential areas and construction sites.
- Metal: For blades and weapon frames. Found in industrial areas, abandoned vehicles, and metal scraps.
- Strategy: Prioritize upgrading this bench early to gain access to better weapons and, most importantly, larger backpacks. The ability to carry more loot directly translates to faster progress in other upgrades. Aim for the Standard Backpack as soon as possible.
2. The Work Bench (Melee Weapon Durability)
While the Crafting Bench creates weapons, the Work Bench focuses on improving the durability and effectiveness of your melee arsenal. A durable weapon means fewer trips back to the bus for repairs or replacements.
- Upgrade Tiers: Each tier increases the durability of all crafted melee weapons and unlocks new melee weapon recipes.
- Tier 1 (Starting): Basic durability for melee weapons.
- Tier 2: Requires common resources. Significantly increases melee weapon durability.
- Tier 3 (Max): Demands rarer resources. Maximizes melee weapon durability, making your bladed and blunt instruments last much longer in combat.
- Key Upgrade Materials:
- Scrap: Always needed.
- Mechanical Parts: For reinforcing weapon structures.
- Wood: For improved handles and balance.
- Metal: For stronger blades and impact surfaces.
- Strategy: Upgrade this bench after you've secured a decent backpack from the Crafting Bench. While firearms are powerful, melee weapons are your bread and butter for conserving ammo and dealing with individual walkers. Increased durability saves you valuable time and resources.
3. The Survival Bench (Food & Consumables)
The Survival Bench is where you'll prepare food, craft essential medical supplies, and create other consumables to keep you alive and healthy in the harsh environment.
- Upgrade Tiers: Each upgrade unlocks more potent healing items, stamina-boosting foods, and other survival aids.
- Tier 1 (Starting): Basic rations (e.g., Canned Food), simple bandages.
- Tier 2: Requires common resources. Unlocks more effective food items (e.g., Stew, Cooked Meat), and the ability to craft Painkillers.
- Tier 3 (Max): Demands rarer resources. Grants access to the most potent healing items (e.g., Medical Kit, Antibiotics), and advanced stamina-boosting meals.
- Key Upgrade Materials:
- Scrap: The universal currency.
- Food Items: Any edible item found in the world (e.g., Canned Goods, Raw Meat, Vegetables).
- Herbs: Found in gardens, parks, and overgrown areas. Crucial for advanced medical supplies.
- Chemicals: For crafting medicines and disinfectants.
- Strategy: This bench is less urgent than the Crafting Bench for initial progress, but becomes increasingly important as you venture into more dangerous zones. Prioritize upgrading it when you find yourself consistently low on healing or stamina. Crafting your own food and medicine is far more resource-efficient than relying solely on scavenged items.
General Base Camp Management Tips
- Resource Prioritization: Always be on the lookout for Scrap. It's the most common and universally required material. Beyond that, prioritize Mechanical Parts and Electrical Parts for weapon and tool upgrades, and Chemicals for medical supplies.
- Loot Everything: Even seemingly useless items can be broken down into valuable components at the benches. Don't leave anything behind if you have space.
- Backpack First: Your first major upgrade goal should always be a larger backpack from the Crafting Bench. More inventory slots mean more loot per run, accelerating all other upgrades.
- Repair, Don't Replace (Initially): Early on, repairing your weapons at the Work Bench is often more cost-effective than crafting new ones, especially for higher-tier items.
- Strategic Scavenging: Different districts offer different types of loot.
- Residential Areas: Good for food, wood, and some basic chemicals.
- Industrial Zones: Excellent for metal, mechanical parts, and some electrical components.
- Commercial Districts: Varied loot, often including food, basic tools, and some electrical parts.
- Medical Facilities: Best source for chemicals and medical supplies.
- The Recycling Bin: Don't forget the recycling bin next to your Crafting Bench. Any unwanted or broken items can be broken down into a fraction of their original crafting materials, providing a small but consistent stream of resources.
- Stash Management: Your bus has limited storage. Organize your stash regularly. Keep essential crafting materials readily available and store excess items you might need later. Don't hoard low-tier weapons if you've unlocked better ones.
