The French Quarter: A Hunter's Paradise (and Peril)
The French Quarter is a sprawling, multi-layered district, often teeming with walkers and rival factions. It's a prime location for scavenging, but also a hotbed for ambushes. Be especially wary during the day, as the sunlight can make spotting distant threats difficult.
Key Objectives & Strategies:
- The Rampart Street Cache: Early in your journey, you'll be directed to a hidden cache near the old jazz club on Rampart Street. This cache often contains essential crafting materials like Scrap Metal and Gunpowder, along with a chance for a basic firearm like the 9mm Pistol. Approach from the alleyway to avoid a group of three walkers patrolling the main street.
- The Old Bookstore: Located on Bourbon Street, this seemingly abandoned building holds more than just dusty tomes. On the second floor, behind a locked door (requires a Shank or a well-placed shot to the lock), you'll find a workbench and often a supply of Medical Supplies and Food Rations. Be prepared for at least two walkers inside, one of which is usually a tougher "Armored" variant.
- The Bell Tower: A crucial early-game objective. To reach the top, you'll need to navigate a series of precarious ladders and broken walkways. The primary objective here is to activate the radio, but don't miss the hidden compartment near the base of the bell itself. It frequently contains a Broken Watch (for crafting advanced electronics) and sometimes a rare weapon blueprint.
- Nighttime Raids: The French Quarter becomes significantly more dangerous at night, with increased walker density and the emergence of "Night Hunters." However, nighttime also offers opportunities for stealth and often yields higher-tier loot. Consider bringing a Silenced Pistol and plenty of Stamina Syringes for these excursions.
- The Jazz Club Alleyway: This narrow passage often contains a dumpster or two, which are excellent sources of Scrap Metal and occasionally Junk. Be cautious, as walkers often funnel into this area.
- Abandoned Apartments: Many of the multi-story buildings in the French Quarter are accessible. Look for open doors or climbable ledges. These apartments frequently contain Food Rations, Bandages, and sometimes a Revolver in a bathroom cabinet or nightstand.
Valuable Loot & Where to Find It:
- Crafting Components:
- Scrap Metal: Abundant in dumpsters, abandoned vehicles, and general debris throughout the district.
- Gunpowder: Often found in military crates, particularly in back alleys or near makeshift barricades.
- Herbs: Look for these near overgrown planters, small gardens, and in the courtyards of some buildings.
- Junk: Common in residential areas, useful for basic crafting. Check shelves, drawers, and abandoned bags.
- Broken Watch: Found in the Bell Tower's hidden compartment. Essential for advanced electronics.
- Weapons:
- 9mm Pistol: Often found in the Rampart Street Cache or dropped by defeated human enemies.
- Revolver: Frequently located in police cars, abandoned homes (especially in bedroom nightstands), or sometimes carried by human adversaries.
- Shotgun: A rarer find in the French Quarter, sometimes dropped by tougher human enemies or found in locked police vehicles.
- Shank: Common melee weapon, useful for opening locked doors. Can be crafted or found on defeated walkers/enemies.
- Consumables:
- Bandages: Common in bathrooms, medical cabinets, and first-aid kits.
- Painkillers: Similar to bandages, found in medical supplies and residential areas.
- Food Rations: Abundant in kitchens, convenience stores, and abandoned apartments.
- Medical Supplies: Found in the Old Bookstore and other residential medical kits.
- Stamina Syringes: Less common, but can be found in medical bags or dropped by human enemies, especially during nighttime raids.
Via Corolla: The Flooded Streets and Hidden Treasures
Via Corolla is characterized by its partially submerged streets and dilapidated buildings. Navigation can be tricky, as water slows your movement and can obscure lurking walkers. This area is known for its valuable resources, particularly for crafting advanced gear.
Key Objectives & Strategies:
- The Flooded Pharmacy: A key location for medical supplies. To access the main storage area, you'll need to find a keycard, often located on a deceased "Exile" nearby or in a small office on the second floor. Inside, expect to find a bounty of Medical Supplies, Antiseptic, and occasionally a Steroids blueprint. Be prepared for at least three waterlogged walkers who will emerge as you wade through the pharmacy.
- The Submerged Bus Depot: This area is a maze of partially submerged buses and debris. Your objective here might involve retrieving a specific item from a bus, or simply scavenging for high-value components. Look for Electronics Scrap and Mechanical Parts in the engine compartments of the buses. A Crowbar is essential for prying open some of the more stubborn containers.
- The Rooftop Garden: Accessible via a series of ladders and makeshift bridges, the rooftop garden offers a strategic vantage point and often contains rare crafting materials like Chemicals and Advanced Herbs. Be cautious of snipers from rival factions who sometimes patrol these elevated positions.
- Water Navigation: When moving through flooded areas, always be aware of your surroundings. Walkers can be difficult to spot in the murky water. Consider using a Flare to illuminate the area ahead, or a Bow for silent takedowns from a distance. The water also muffles sound, which can be both an advantage for stealth and a disadvantage for detecting approaching threats.
- The Abandoned School: A multi-story building with classrooms and offices. This location is often heavily infested with walkers but can yield significant amounts of Textiles, Junk, and sometimes Weapon Parts in the staff rooms. The gymnasium might contain a few scattered Food Rations or Water Bottles.
- The Construction Site: A partially completed building, often with scaffolding and exposed rebar. This area is a good source of Scrap Metal, Wood Scraps, and occasionally Tools. Be mindful of environmental hazards and potential ambushes from human enemies using the verticality to their advantage.
Valuable Loot & Where to Find It:
- Advanced Crafting Materials:
- Electronics Scrap: Abundant in the bus depot, abandoned offices, and any areas with discarded electronics.
- Chemicals: Found in the pharmacy, industrial containers, and sometimes in science labs within the school.
- Advanced Herbs: Primarily found in the Rooftop Garden and other secluded, overgrown areas.
- Mechanical Parts: Common in the bus depot, garages, and toolboxes.
- Textiles: Plentiful in the abandoned school and residential areas.
- Weapon Parts: Look for Weapon Parts in toolboxes, military crates, and sometimes on defeated human enemies. These are crucial for upgrading your firearms and are more common here than in the French Quarter.
- Rare Consumables:
- Stamina Syringes: More frequently found here, often in medical bags or hidden compartments within the pharmacy or school.
- Health Syringes: Similar to stamina syringes, found in medical stashes.
- Antiseptic: Primarily found in the Flooded Pharmacy.
- Steroids Blueprint: Can be found in the Flooded Pharmacy.
- Weapons:
- Bow: Can sometimes be found in residential areas or dropped by human enemies. Excellent for silent takedowns.
- Crowbar: Essential for prying open containers, often found in toolboxes or construction areas.
The Ward: A Gauntlet of Danger and Riches
The Ward is arguably the most dangerous district in New Orleans, especially during the events of Chapter 2: Retribution. It's a densely packed urban environment with narrow streets, multiple levels, and a high concentration of both walkers and human enemies. However, the rewards for braving The Ward are substantial.
Key Objectives & Strategies:
- The Tower Stronghold: This heavily fortified building is a central point of conflict. Expect fierce resistance from both walkers and human enemies. Your objective here will likely involve infiltrating the stronghold to retrieve a critical item or eliminate a high-value target. A Shotgun and plenty of Explosives are highly recommended for this encounter. Look for alternative entry points, such as ventilation shafts or broken windows, to bypass heavily guarded entrances. Prioritize taking out snipers on elevated positions.
- The Abandoned Hospital: A terrifying but rewarding location. The hospital is crawling with walkers, including "Shamblers" and "Armored" variants. The lower levels often contain valuable Medical Supplies, Advanced Chemicals, and even blueprints for powerful healing items. Be prepared for jump scares and tight-quarter combat. A Katana or other sharp melee weapon is excellent for conserving ammo. Look for patient records and doctor's offices for hidden stashes.
- The Rooftop Sniper Nests: The Ward features numerous elevated positions that offer excellent sniper opportunities. If you're facing human enemies, consider taking them out from a distance with a Hunting Rifle or Compound Bow before engaging on the ground. Conversely, be wary of enemy snipers yourself; always scan rooftops before advancing.
- Nighttime Infiltration: The Ward is particularly brutal at night. However, if you're well-equipped and stealthy, you can bypass many direct confrontations. Utilize shadows and distractions (like throwing bottles) to draw walkers away from your path. Night Hunters are more prevalent, making stealth even more critical.
- The Warehouse District: A series of interconnected warehouses and loading docks. This area is a prime target for scavenging Scrap Metal, Mechanical Parts, and Tools. Expect to encounter patrols of human enemies guarding valuable caches. Use cover effectively and consider flanking maneuvers.
- The Sewers: Accessible through various manholes, the sewers offer a dangerous but often rewarding shortcut or infiltration route. They are dark, cramped, and usually infested with a high density of walkers. Bring a reliable light source and a strong melee weapon. You might find rare Chemicals or hidden stashes of Weapon Parts down here.
Valuable Loot & Where to Find It:
- High-Tier Weapons:
- Assault Rifle: Often dropped by heavily armed human enemies in the Tower Stronghold or found in secure military caches.
- SMG: Similar to the Assault Rifle, found on elite human enemies or in high-security zones.
- Cleaver/Axe: Powerful melee weapons, often found in kitchens, butcher shops, or dropped by tougher human enemies.
- Katana: A rare and highly effective melee weapon, sometimes found in hidden areas of the hospital or as a reward for specific objectives.
- Hunting Rifle: Excellent for long-range engagements, found in sniper nests or on defeated snipers.
- Explosives (Grenades, Molotovs): Found in military crates, on human enemies, or in the warehouse district. Essential for crowd control and breaching defenses.
- Rare Crafting Materials:
- Advanced Electronics Scrap: Found in the hospital's medical equipment, secure offices, and some warehouse areas.

- Tools: Crucial for advanced crafting, found in warehouses, workshops, and construction sites.
- Unique Blueprints: The Ward often holds blueprints for powerful weapon upgrades, advanced consumables (like advanced healing serums), and even unique melee weapons. Search every nook and cranny, especially in locked safes (which require a Lockpick or a well-placed explosive) and hidden compartments within the hospital or stronghold.
- Consumables:
- Advanced Medkits: Found in the hospital and secure medical stashes.
- Stamina/Health Boosters: Rare, but can be found in the hospital or as rewards for challenging encounters.
Always remember to manage your inventory, prioritize your objectives, and never underestimate the dangers of New Orleans. Good luck, Tourist!
