After the initial crash, you'll be in the cemetery. Your first task is to locate your Skiff. Follow the main path, keeping an eye out for any useful scrap or food. The Skiff is usually marked on your compass or by a distinct landmark. Once you reach it, interact with the control panel to establish your base and officially begin your adventure. This is your safe haven.
