Known Bugs & Workarounds
Even in the post-apocalyptic world of New Orleans, some things are more frustrating than a Walker horde. This section details common bugs encountered by fellow tourists and, more importantly, provides actionable workarounds to help you survive these digital glitches.
Inventory & Crafting Glitches
- Disappearing Backpack Items: Occasionally, items placed in your backpack, especially smaller consumables or crafting materials, may vanish upon returning to the bus or loading a save.
- Workaround: Before returning to the bus, always transfer critical items (e.g., Medicine, Bandages, Gun Parts, Scrap Metal) to your main inventory slots or the storage chest on the bus. Double-check your backpack contents before exiting a map. This seems to be more prevalent with items stacked in larger quantities.
- Crafting Bench Freezes: Players have reported instances where interacting with the crafting benches (Work Bench, Survival Bench, Gear Bench) can cause the game to freeze or crash, particularly when rapidly switching between recipes or materials.
- Workaround: Approach crafting benches slowly. Select your desired recipe and materials deliberately. If the game feels sluggish, try restarting the application before a major crafting session. Avoid spamming interaction buttons.
Environmental & Interaction Issues
- Stuck on Geometry: It's not uncommon to get caught on environmental objects, especially in cluttered areas like The Ward or Via Corolla. This can range from minor snags to being completely immobilized.
- Workaround:
- First, try crouching and moving in different directions.
- If that fails, attempt to jump.
- As a last resort, quickly open your journal and select "Return to Bus." This will reset your position to the bus, but you will lose any progress made in that specific run and any items you haven't secured. Only use this if you are truly stuck.
- Workaround:
- Unresponsive Doors/Loot Containers: Sometimes, doors or lootable containers (e.g., cabinets, drawers, refrigerators) may become unresponsive, preventing interaction.
- Workaround: Step away from the object and then approach it again from a slightly different angle. If it's a door, try opening it with your off-hand. If the issue persists, leaving the area and returning (or even reloading your save) often resolves it.
Combat & AI Anomalies
- Walker Pathfinding Glitches: Walkers can occasionally get stuck on environmental objects or display erratic pathfinding, especially when navigating stairs or tight corridors. While sometimes beneficial, it can also lead to unexpected ambushes.
- Workaround: Always be aware of your surroundings and listen for Walker sounds, even if you don't see them. If you notice a Walker behaving strangely, assume it might suddenly correct its path. Use throwable items like Bottles or Cans to draw their attention and reset their pathfinding if they are stuck in an inconvenient location.
- Human Faction AI Stalling: During skirmishes with human enemies (The Tower or The Reclaimed), their AI can sometimes "stall," causing them to stand still or fail to react to your presence.
- Workaround: Take advantage of this! If you encounter a stalled enemy, aim for a headshot to dispatch them quickly. However, be cautious, as they can suddenly "wake up" and become fully aggressive. Do not rely on this bug for consistent combat strategy.
Performance & Visual Bugs
- Texture Pop-In/Low-Resolution Textures: On some systems, especially after prolonged play sessions, you might notice textures failing to load correctly or appearing in low resolution.
- Workaround: This is often a memory management issue. Restarting the game application completely usually resolves this. Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date.
- Audio Desync: In rare cases, audio cues (e.g., Walker growls, weapon sounds, dialogue) may become desynchronized with the on-screen action.
- Workaround: A quick pause to the game menu and then unpausing can sometimes resync the audio. If not, a full game restart is recommended.
