Mission Flow & Decision Points
Welcome, fellow survivor! Navigating the treacherous streets of New Orleans in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners requires more than just a sharp axe and a steady hand. This section will guide you through key missions, highlighting critical decision points and offering strategies to maximize your chances of survival and resource acquisition. Remember, every choice has consequences in the Bayou.
The Search for the Reserve
This early-game mission sets the stage for much of your journey. Your primary objective is to locate the mythical Reserve, a hidden cache of supplies and potentially, a safe haven. The path is fraught with danger, but careful planning will see you through.
- Initial Intel: After your first few scavenging runs, you'll hear whispers of the Reserve. Your first concrete lead will come from Casey, who will task you with finding a specific radio frequency.
- Radio Tower Ascent (Via Corolla):
- Preparation: Before heading to Via Corolla, ensure you have at least two Medical Syringes, a fully repaired 9mm Pistol with a spare magazine, and a durable melee weapon like the National Guard Knife or Fire Axe. The tower is often swarming with walkers, and a few armored ones might be present. Consider bringing a few Jambalaya or Nutria Meat for stamina regeneration during the climb.
- Climb Strategy: The climb itself is straightforward, but be wary of walkers lurking on ledges and behind obstacles. Use your pistol to dispatch distant threats, conserving melee for close encounters. Look for the Radio Parts scattered on the upper platforms. There's usually a small cache of crafting materials near the top, so keep an eye out.
- Decision Point: Once you activate the radio, you'll pick up a distress signal. This signal will lead you to a choice: investigate immediately or return to the bus for supplies.
- Investigate Immediately: This can lead to an early encounter with a group of hostile survivors. While risky, it can yield valuable early-game loot like Gunpowder, Scrap Metal, and potentially a rare weapon blueprint if you're prepared. Be ready for a firefight against 2-3 armed enemies.
- Return to Bus: The safer option. Allows you to craft more ammunition, repair gear, and gather additional food and medical supplies. Recommended for newer players or those low on resources. You can always investigate the signal later.
- The Old Church (The Ward):
- Objective: After deciphering the radio signal, you'll be directed to an old, dilapidated church in The Ward. This location is a hotbed of activity, often contested by both the Tower and the Reclaimed. Your goal is to find a specific journal entry that further details the Reserve's location.
- Entry Strategy: Approach from the rear alleyways to avoid direct confrontation with any patrols at the front entrance. Look for a broken window on the side of the church, which provides a less conspicuous entry point. Alternatively, the main doors are often barricaded but can be forced open with a strong melee weapon or by shooting the lock. Be aware that entering through the main doors might trigger additional walker spawns or alert nearby human enemies.
- Navigating the Interior: The church interior is dark and filled with debris. Walkers often lurk behind pews and in confessionals. Move slowly and use your flashlight sparingly to avoid drawing attention. There are several valuable crafting materials scattered throughout, especially in the sacristy and the choir loft.
- Key Item Acquisition: The Journal Entry you need is located on the altar at the front of the church. As you approach, be prepared for a scripted jump scare from a lurker or a group of walkers bursting through a side door. The journal details the location of a hidden key, often referencing a specific landmark or object within the church itself. For example, it might mention "the key beneath the weeping angel" or "behind the broken stained glass." Search thoroughly around the altar and any prominent statues or architectural features.
- Decision Point (Optional Encounter): Depending on your entry and noise level, you might encounter a small group of Reclaimed scavengers already inside the church.
- Engage the Reclaimed: This will lead to a firefight, potentially yielding valuable weapons and resources from their bodies. However, it will also attract more walkers and potentially alert other factions in the area.
- Evade the Reclaimed: If you're low on resources or prefer stealth, you can often sneak past them by using cover and moving silently. This allows you to complete your objective without unnecessary combat.
- Exit Strategy: Once you have the journal and the key, consider your exit. If you engaged the Reclaimed, the front entrance might be clear, but the area outside could be swarming with walkers. The broken window you entered through might still be the safest, albeit slower, route out.
The Gauntlet and the Armory
As you get closer to the Reserve, you'll face increasingly difficult challenges, often involving heavily armed human enemies. Resource management and tactical combat become paramount.
- The Gauntlet (Rampart):
- Preparation: This area is a true test of your combat prowess. Bring your best firearms – the AR-47 and Lever Action Shotgun are highly recommended. Stock up on Explosive Arrows if you have the bow, and at least three Bandages and two Medical Syringes. Consider a few Grenades or Molotovs for crowd control.
- Enemy Types: Expect multiple waves of both Tower and Reclaimed soldiers, often equipped with body armor. Prioritize headshots and use cover effectively. Walkers will also be drawn to the gunfire, creating chaotic multi-faction engagements. Utilize environmental hazards like explosive barrels to your advantage.
- Decision Point: During the Gauntlet, you'll encounter a trapped survivor.
- Rescue the Survivor: This will consume valuable time and potentially draw more enemies, but can lead to a small cache of Crafting Materials (e.g., 5x Gunpowder, 10x Scrap Metal) or a unique weapon blueprint (e.g., "The Judge" revolver) later on, delivered to your bus. The survivor will also provide a small amount of intel on faction movements.
- Leave the Survivor: A pragmatic choice that allows you to focus on the objective and conserve resources. No immediate negative consequences, but you miss out on potential rewards and a minor lore interaction.
- The Armory (Bywater):
- Objective: To gain access to the Reserve, you'll need to disable a specific security system, requiring a trip to a heavily fortified armory in Bywater.
- Stealth vs. Brute Force: Bywater is crawling with guards (typically 4-6 armed Tower soldiers). Consider a stealthy approach, using suppressed weapons like the Silenced 9mm or melee takedowns to thin out patrols. Utilize the dense foliage and abandoned buildings for cover. If you prefer a direct assault, ensure you have plenty of ammunition and grenades. Be warned, a full-frontal assault will likely trigger an alarm, summoning additional reinforcements.
- Key Item: The Security Override Keycard is located in a locked safe within the main office on the second floor of the central armory building. The safe's combination can be found on a whiteboard in the adjacent room, often obscured by clutter or a tactical map. Be careful, as there's usually a tripwire mine or a sleeping walker near the safe.
- Optional Loot: The armory contains a wealth of military-grade crafting materials (e.g., Advanced Components, Gunpowder) and often a high-tier weapon (e.g., Assault Rifle, Shotgun) in a weapon rack or locker.
The Final Confrontation and the Reserve
The culmination of your efforts. Be prepared for anything.
- The Reserve Entrance (Memorial Lane):
- Final Preparations: This is it. Max out your inventory with the best weapons, ammunition, and healing items you possess. Consider bringing a Crafting Table if you have the backpack space, for on-the-fly repairs, though this is a high-risk strategy due to limited inventory slots. A full loadout should include at least two primary firearms, a reliable melee weapon, and 5+ healing items.
- Environmental Hazards: The path to the Reserve is not just guarded by humans; expect environmental traps, tripwires, and potentially a large horde of walkers drawn by the commotion. There are often flooded sections, slowing your movement and making stealth difficult.
- Decision Point: Inside the Reserve, you'll face a critical choice regarding Casey and the fate of the supplies. This decision has significant implications for the game's ending and your relationship with other factions.
- Option A (Trust Casey): Follow Casey's instructions regarding the Reserve's contents. This typically involves using the pump to drain the Reserve, which will flood Casey's hiding place. This path generally leads to a more peaceful resolution with Casey (if he survives) and aligns you with his moral compass, but may limit your immediate personal gain from the Reserve's most valuable items. You'll receive a unique crafting recipe or a significant amount of common resources as a reward.
- Option B (Betray Casey): Take the Reserve's contents for yourself. This involves activating the pump to drain the Reserve, but then leaving Casey to drown in his hiding spot. This grants you immediate access to all the valuable resources within the Reserve (e.g., rare crafting materials, high-tier weapons, large sums of Requisition points). However, it will lead to a confrontation with Casey (if he's still alive) and potentially other survivors who learn of your actions, impacting your standing with factions and leading to a more morally ambiguous ending.
Remember, these are just guidelines. Adapt your strategies based on your playstyle and available resources. Good luck, survivor!
