Combat & Takedowns
While the core of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory revolves around stealth and remaining unseen, there will inevitably be situations where direct engagement or swift, silent takedowns become necessary. Sam Fisher is a master of close-quarters combat (CQC), offering a versatile toolkit for both lethal and non-lethal resolutions to encounters. Understanding these mechanics is crucial for adapting to dynamic mission scenarios and achieving optimal performance scores.
Non-Lethal Takedowns: The Ghost's Approach
Non-lethal methods are the cornerstone of a high-scoring, ghost-like playthrough. They allow Sam to neutralize threats without leaving a trace or raising alarms, preserving the mission's integrity and often rewarding bonus points. Mastering these techniques is paramount:
- Chokehold (Knockout): This is your primary non-lethal takedown. From behind, approach an unsuspecting enemy and initiate the chokehold. Sam will quickly render the guard unconscious. This is silent and effective, ideal for clearing paths or securing areas. Unconscious enemies can be hidden in dark corners or containers to prevent discovery.
- Punch (Stun): A quick, non-lethal strike that temporarily stuns an enemy. While not as permanent as a chokehold, it can be useful for creating a brief window to escape, bypass, or grab an enemy who is partially aware of your presence. Be cautious, as a stunned enemy will eventually recover and raise an alarm if not dealt with further.
- Grab & Interrogate: A powerful non-lethal option. By grabbing an enemy from behind, you can hold them as a human shield, interrogate them for valuable intel (door codes, objective locations, patrol routes), or simply knock them out. Interrogation is often critical for uncovering hidden objectives or simplifying complex sections of a mission. While holding an enemy, you are vulnerable to other guards, so choose your timing and location carefully.
- Environmental Takedowns: Sam can utilize the environment to his advantage. Pulling enemies over ledges, through open windows, or into dark, confined spaces are silent and effective ways to neutralize them without direct combat. Look for opportunities to use ledges, railings, or even water bodies to dispose of enemies discreetly.
- Sticky Shocker: A gadget that delivers an electrical charge, temporarily incapacitating enemies. It's a ranged non-lethal option, useful for targets that are difficult to approach directly.
Remember, unconscious enemies can still be discovered by patrolling guards, triggering an alarm. Always hide bodies in dark areas, lockers, or other obscure locations to maintain your stealth rating.
Lethal Takedowns: When Stealth Fails
While generally discouraged for optimal scores, lethal force is available when absolutely necessary. Sam's arsenal includes both silent and overt lethal options:
- Knife Takedown: A brutal, silent, and lethal attack from behind. This is a last resort for eliminating a persistent threat when non-lethal options are too risky or unavailable.
- Firearms: Sam's SC-20K assault rifle and SC Pistol are equipped with various ammunition types.
- Standard Rounds: Effective against unarmored targets. Generates significant noise.
- Sticky Camera (Gas): While primarily a scouting tool, the gas emitted by a deployed sticky camera can incapacitate enemies, acting as a non-lethal area-of-effect weapon.
- Sticky Shocker: (As mentioned above) Non-lethal, but delivered via the SC-20K.
- Ring Airfoil Projectiles: Non-lethal, designed to knock out enemies at a distance with minimal noise. Ideal for targets out of reach for a CQC takedown.
Engaging in sustained firefights is highly discouraged. Not only does it significantly lower your mission score, but it also alerts all nearby enemies, often leading to overwhelming odds and mission failure. If a firefight erupts, immediately seek cover, prioritize eliminating immediate threats, and then attempt to re-establish stealth.
Combat Strategies & Best Practices
- Prioritize Stealth: Always aim for a stealthy approach. Observe patrol routes, enemy vision cones, and environmental hazards before acting.
- Utilize Darkness: Darkness is your best friend. Shoot out lights, use your OCP to disable electronic light sources, and move through shadows to remain undetected.
- Sound Management: Every action has a sound profile. Running, shooting, and even opening doors can alert enemies. Move slowly and deliberately when near hostiles.
- Cover System: Use cover effectively to break line of sight, reload, or plan your next move. Peeking around corners is crucial for reconnaissance.
- Gadget Integration: Combine takedowns with your gadgets. Use a camera to distract a guard before a chokehold, or a sticky shocker to disable a distant threat.
- Environmental Awareness: Look for opportunities to use the environment to your advantage – dropping objects to create distractions, using pipes for vertical movement, or exploiting water for silent movement.
