Countdown
Countdown is a high-octane, objective-based game mode designed for up to eight players, offering a fast-paced challenge with significant rewards. It's an excellent source for targeted loot farming and exotic caches, making it a crucial activity for endgame progression. This guide will break down the mechanics, strategies, and optimal approaches to dominate Countdown.
Overview and Objectives
In Countdown, your team is deployed into a power plant overrun by hostile factions. The primary goal is to stabilize the plant's main reactor and extract before a 15-minute timer expires. This involves completing a series of randomly generated objectives, managing hunter encounters, and ultimately facing a final boss sequence.
- Initial Deployment: You'll drop into one of several entry points within the power plant. Immediately identify your first set of objectives.
- Main Objectives (3 required): These are the core tasks that contribute to stabilizing the reactor. Examples include:
- Hack the Servers: Locate server rooms (often marked with a computer icon on your HUD) and interact with the terminals while defending against waves of enemies. Be prepared for EMP disruptions.
- Deactivate the Turrets: Find and disable hostile turrets, which usually involves destroying a control panel or interacting with a console.
- Secure the Control Room: Clear out all hostiles in a designated control room and hold the position.
- Neutralize the Contamination: Activate decontamination units and defend them from enemies attempting to disable them.
- Hunter Encounters: After completing each main objective, a Hunter will spawn. These elite enemies are highly dangerous, possess advanced skills, and can disrupt your abilities. Prioritize taking them down quickly.
- Final Objective: Once three main objectives are complete, you'll be directed to the main reactor. Here, you'll need to activate the reactor and defend it against a final onslaught of enemies, including multiple Hunters.
- Extraction: After stabilizing the reactor, proceed to the designated extraction zone. Call for extraction and defend the area until the helicopter arrives. Be mindful of the timer – if it runs out before extraction, you fail.
Recommended Builds and Gear
While various builds can succeed, certain archetypes excel in Countdown due to its intense combat and objective-focused nature. Communication and a balanced team composition are key.
Damage Dealer (DPS) Builds
- Striker's Battlegear: The 4-piece bonus provides a massive damage buff, making it a top-tier choice for sustained DPS. Pair with a Fenris Group AB chest piece with Obliterate and a Grupo Sombra S.A. backpack with Vigilance for maximum weapon damage.
- Heartbreaker: Another strong option, especially for players who prefer shotguns or SMGs. The bonus armor and damage amplification are excellent for pushing objectives. Consider pairing with a Ceska Vyroba s.r.o. chest and Walker, Harris & Co. backpack.
- Weapons: Assault Rifles like the Famas 2010, Carbine 7, or Kingbreaker are highly effective. For close-quarters, the Scorpio shotgun is invaluable for its crowd control.
- Skills: Striker Drone and Assault Turret for added damage and distraction. Alternatively, Reviver Hive for self-preservation.
Skill Damage Builds
- Empress International / Hana-U / Wyvern Wear: A classic combination for skill-focused damage. Aim for 3x Empress, 2x Hana-U, 1x Wyvern Wear. The Waveform exotic holster is a fantastic addition.
- Weapons: Any weapon with the In Sync talent is ideal to boost skill damage.
- Skills: Assault Turret and Striker Drone are the standard for consistent damage. Cluster Seekers or Artificer Hive can also be strong depending on team composition.
Support/Tank Builds
While less common in random groups, a dedicated support can significantly enhance team survivability.
- Future Initiative (4-piece): Provides powerful healing and damage amplification for allies. Pair with a Named Chest Piece like Emperor's Guard for additional armor regen or a Named Backpack like Opportunistic for damage debuffs.
- Foundry Bulwark (4-piece): Excellent for tanking and drawing aggro, especially useful for protecting skill users or during objective defenses.
- Skills: Healing Launcher, Reinforcer Chem Launcher, Bulwark Shield (for Foundry).
General Strategies and Tips
- Stay Together: While the map is large, splitting up too much can lead to being overwhelmed. Try to move as a unit, especially when Hunters are present.
- Hunter Priority: When Hunters spawn, immediately focus fire on them. They can disable your skills and deal massive damage. Use your strongest abilities and grenades.
- Manage Debuffs: Hunters will often deploy EMPs or disorienting skills. Be aware of your status effects and reposition if necessary.
- Utilize SHD Tech: Throughout the map, you'll find SHD Tech caches. These grant temporary buffs like increased damage, armor, or skill efficiency. Use them strategically before major engagements or Hunter spawns.
- Resource Management: Ammunition can become scarce. Be mindful of your shots and pick up ammo drops from defeated enemies. Consider carrying a secondary weapon with a different ammo type.
- Objective Awareness: Keep an eye on the objective markers on your HUD. Don't get sidetracked by endless enemy spawns; focus on completing the current task.
- Extraction Prep: Before calling for extraction, ensure your team is regrouped and ready. Clear out any nearby enemies to make the defense phase smoother. Position yourselves to cover all entry points to the extraction zone.
- Targeted Loot: Before starting Countdown, remember to set your desired targeted loot. This mode is one of the most efficient ways to farm specific gear sets, brands, and weapon types.
Mastering Countdown requires practice and teamwork, but the rewards for your efforts are substantial. By following these strategies and optimizing your builds, you'll be stabilizing reactors and extracting valuable loot in no time, further enhancing your agent's capabilities for the challenges that lie ahead in The Division 2.
