Gear Optimization & Recalibration
Welcome, Agent, to the advanced art of perfecting your loadout. The Division 2's deep customization system allows you to fine-tune every piece of gear, transforming good items into truly exceptional ones. This section will guide you through the intricacies of Recalibration and Optimization, ensuring your builds are always performing at their peak.
Understanding the Crafting Station
Both Recalibration and Optimization are performed at the Crafting Station, located in the Base of Operations (White House) or any safe house. You'll need to have unlocked the full capabilities of the Crafting Station by progressing through the main story and completing relevant projects.
Recalibration: Swapping Attributes and Talents
Recalibration is your primary tool for adjusting the core stats and abilities of your gear. It allows you to transfer a single attribute, core attribute, or talent from one item to another of the same type. This is crucial for fixing a "god roll" item that has one undesirable stat.
The Recalibration Library
Before you can recalibrate, you need to extract attributes and talents into your Recalibration Library. This library acts as a permanent storage for the highest possible roll of any given attribute or talent you've encountered. Once an attribute/talent is in your library, you can apply it to compatible gear pieces as many times as you like.
- Extracting Attributes/Talents:
- Go to the Crafting Station and select the "Recalibration" tab.
- Choose "Recalibration Library."
- Select the gear slot (e.g., "Chest," "Backpack," "Assault Rifle").
- Identify an item in your inventory with a high-roll attribute or a desired talent.
- Select the attribute or talent you wish to extract. Confirm the extraction.
- Note: Extracting an attribute or talent destroys the source item. Only the highest value of an attribute is stored; if you extract a lower value than what's already in your library, it will not replace it.
- Applying Recalibration:
- At the Crafting Station, select the "Recalibration" tab.
- Choose "Recalibrate."
- Select the gear piece you want to modify (the "target item").
- Identify the attribute, core attribute, or talent you wish to change on the target item.
- From your Recalibration Library, select the desired attribute or talent to replace it with.
- Confirm the recalibration.
Important Recalibration Rules:
- You can only recalibrate one attribute, core attribute, or talent per item. Once a slot has been recalibrated, it will have a small icon next to it, indicating it cannot be changed again.
- Core attributes can only be swapped with other core attributes (e.g., Weapon Damage for Weapon Damage, Armor for Armor).
- Attributes can only be swapped with other attributes (e.g., Critical Hit Chance for Critical Hit Damage).
- Talents can only be swapped with other talents.
- The cost of recalibration involves various materials like Ceramics, Polycarbonate, Steel, Titanium, Carbon Fiber, Electronics, and Receiver Components, along with a significant amount of Credits. The cost increases with the quality of the attribute/talent being transferred.
- Exotic gear pieces cannot be recalibrated.
Optimization: Maxing Out Your Rolls
Optimization is the ultimate endgame sink for resources, allowing you to push every attribute on an item to its absolute maximum value (100%). This process is expensive but guarantees a perfect item, assuming you have the desired attributes already in place via recalibration.
The Optimization Process
- Accessing Optimization:
- Go to the Crafting Station and select the "Optimization" tab.
- Choose the gear piece you wish to optimize.
- Optimizing Attributes:
- Once you select an item, you'll see a breakdown of its attributes and their current percentage towards their maximum roll.
- Select an attribute you wish to optimize.
- The game will display the cost to increase that attribute's value by a small increment.
- Confirm the optimization. You will need to repeat this process multiple times for each attribute until it reaches 100%.
Optimization Costs:
Optimization is incredibly resource-intensive. You'll need a large quantity of:
- Optimization Materials: These are specific to optimization and include:
- Field Recon Data: Primarily obtained from Control Points Level 3+, Summit caches, and some Dark Zone activities.
- SHD Calibration: Acquired from Control Points Level 4, Legendary missions, and Summit challenges.
- Exotic Components: Obtained by deconstructing Exotic items. These are crucial for optimizing Exotic gear.
- Standard Crafting Materials: All the basic materials (Ceramics, Polycarbonate, etc.) are also required in significant amounts.
- Credits: A substantial amount of currency is needed for each optimization step.
When to Optimize:
Only optimize items that are already "near-perfect" after recalibration. If an item has a low-roll attribute that you haven't recalibrated, it's far more efficient to recalibrate it first, then optimize the remaining attributes. Save optimization for your truly best-in-slot items that you plan to use for a very long time.
Strategic Approach to Gear Perfection
Follow this general workflow for maximizing your gear:
- Farm for Base Items: Focus on acquiring items with the correct core attribute and desired talents. Don't worry too much about secondary attributes at this stage. Targeted Loot in the Summit, Countdown, and specific missions are excellent for this.
- Populate Your Recalibration Library: As you farm, always be on the lookout for items with high-roll attributes or useful talents to extract into your library. This is a continuous process.
- Recalibrate First: Once you have a promising item, use recalibration to swap out any undesirable attribute or talent for a perfect one from your library. Remember, you can only do this once per item.
- Consider Optimization (Endgame): Only after an item has the correct core attribute, the desired talent, and all secondary attributes are either perfect or recalibrated to perfect, should you consider optimization. This is where you pour in your Field Recon Data and SHD Calibration to push every stat to 100%.
By mastering both Recalibration and Optimization, you'll transform your Agent into an unstoppable force, capable of tackling the most challenging content The Division 2 has to offer.
