Understanding Affinity

Affinity represents the bond between two specific characters within the same unit. When characters fight together, their Affinity grows. Higher Affinity levels unlock various benefits:

Stat Bonuses: Characters fighting alongside allies with high Affinity receive passive stat boosts in combat, making them more effective. These bonuses are incremental and scale with Affinity level.
Co-op Skills: At certain Affinity levels, characters may unlock powerful Co-op Skills. These are unique active abilities that can only be triggered when the two characters are deployed in the same unit. For example, a high Affinity between Alain and Scarlett might unlock a combined healing and attack skill.
Dialogue & Events: Increased Affinity often triggers special dialogue scenes and character-specific events at your various encampments or during exploration. These provide deeper insight into the characters' personalities and backstories.

How to Increase Affinity

There are several reliable ways to raise your units' Affinity:

Sharing Meals: At any liberated town or fortress with a Tavern, you can choose to "Share a Meal." Select up to two characters to dine together. This provides a significant boost to their Affinity, often enough to raise a level.

Gifts: Certain items found throughout Fevrith can be given as gifts to individual characters. While not directly increasing Affinity between two specific characters, gifts boost the recipient's overall morale and can sometimes trigger unique dialogue that indirectly contributes to their relationships with others. Look for items like the "Fevrithian Rose" or "Ancient Coin" which are generally well-received.
Story Events & Side Quests: Completing specific side quests or advancing certain character-focused story arcs can sometimes provide a one-time Affinity boost between relevant characters. Keep an eye out for character-specific markers on the world map.

Unit Composition for Maximum Affinity

When forming your units, consider the existing Affinity levels between your characters. A unit composed of characters with high Affinity will generally outperform a unit of disparate individuals, even if the latter has slightly better raw stats. Look for these synergies:

Frontline Pairs: Characters like Alain and Josef, or Chloe and Hodrick, often have natural Affinity growth due to their early game presence. Keeping them together in the front row can maximize their defensive and offensive capabilities.
Supportive Bonds: Pair healers (e.g., Clerics, Shaman) with frontline tanks or damage dealers they frequently support. The constant interaction in battle will quickly build Affinity, leading to stronger healing or protective Co-op Skills.
Class Synergies: Beyond individual characters, certain classes naturally complement each other. For instance, a Gryphon Knight and a Fighter might develop strong Affinity quickly due to their combined aerial and ground attacks.

Co-op Skills in Practice

Co-op Skills are your reward for investing in relationships. These powerful abilities can turn the tide of battle. Pay attention to the conditions for activation:

Trigger Conditions: Most Co-op Skills activate under specific circumstances, such as "after an ally takes damage," "when attacking an enemy with a status effect," or "at the start of battle."
Strategic Placement: Ensure the characters with a desired Co-op Skill are positioned in your unit where their trigger conditions are most likely to be met. For example, a healing Co-op Skill between a Cleric and a Hoplite is best utilized if the Hoplite is in the front row, taking hits.
