Promoting your units in Unicorn Overlord is a critical step in strengthening your army. Not only do promoted units gain significant stat boosts, but they also unlock powerful new active and passive skills, often changing their role on the battlefield entirely. Understanding the requirements and planning your promotions strategically will be key to overcoming the challenges of Cornia and beyond.

The Promotion Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

Reach the Promotion Level: Most units become eligible for promotion once they reach Level 10. Some unique characters or special classes might have slightly different level requirements, but Level 10 is the general benchmark. Keep an eye on your unit's status screen; a small "Promote" icon will appear when they are ready.
Acquire a "Proof of Merit": This is the primary item required for all standard unit promotions. Proofs of Merit are a relatively common resource, but you'll need a steady supply as your army grows.
- Where to Find Proofs of Merit:
  - Main Story Quests: Many main story objectives and boss battles will reward you with Proofs of Merit. Prioritize these for a consistent income.
  - Side Quests & Deliveries: Completing various side quests, especially those involving town restoration or resource gathering, often yield Proofs of Merit. Check the "Deliveries" tab in any liberated town for potential rewards.
  - Overworld Exploration: Keep an eye out for sparkling spots on the overworld map. These often contain hidden items, including Proofs of Merit.
  - Arena Battles: Participating and excelling in the Colosseum (unlocked later in the game) can also provide a reliable source of these items.
  - Trading Posts: In some liberated towns, you might find trading posts where you can exchange specific regional resources for Proofs of Merit. For example, in Ouvrir Harbor, you might trade Fish for Proofs.
Visit a Fort or Command Post: Once a unit is Level 10+ and you possess a Proof of Merit, head to any liberated Fort or your main Command Post.
Initiate Promotion:
- From the Fort/Command Post menu, select "Units."
- Choose the unit you wish to promote.
- If eligible, a "Promote" option will be available. Select it.
- Confirm the promotion. The Proof of Merit will be consumed, and your unit will undergo a transformation!

Understanding Promotion Benefits

Upon promotion, units gain:

Significant Stat Increases: Expect a substantial boost to HP, physical and magical attack, defense, accuracy, evasion, and initiative.
New Class Name: For example, a "Fighter" might become a "Warrior," or a "Soldier" might become a "Legionnaire."

Resource Management: While Proofs of Merit are common, you'll need many of them. Don't promote every unit the moment they hit Level 10. Save some for units you frequently use or those that fill critical gaps in your strategy.
Unique Character Promotions: Alain, Scarlett, and other unique story characters often have their own unique promotion paths and sometimes even different item requirements or story triggers. Pay close attention to their character events and quest lines. For instance, Alain's promotion is tied to a specific story beat and does not require a Proof of Merit in the traditional sense, but rather a narrative progression.
