Resource Management & Economy
Mastering the economy and efficient resource management in Unicorn Overlord is crucial for building a formidable army and conquering Fevrith. This guide will walk you through the various currencies, materials, and strategies to ensure your war chest and armory are always well-stocked.
Gold: The Universal Currency
Gold is your primary currency, used for nearly every transaction in the game. From recruiting new units to purchasing equipment and promoting classes, a healthy gold reserve is essential.
Acquiring Gold
- Battle Rewards: The most consistent source of gold. Successfully completing main quests and side missions will net you significant sums. Replaying skirmishes can also provide a steady, albeit smaller, income.
- Selling Unwanted Gear: As you progress, you'll acquire a vast array of weapons, armor, and accessories. Regularly visit shops in liberated towns and sell off any equipment that your current units don't need or that is inferior to what you already possess. Prioritize selling common items that drop frequently.
- Mining Points: Scattered across the world map are mining points, often marked by sparkling ore veins. Sending a unit to these locations will yield a small amount of gold and sometimes crafting materials. These respawn over time, making them a reliable passive income source.
- Quest Rewards: Certain side quests and character events will reward you with a lump sum of gold upon completion. Keep an eye out for these opportunities.
- Liberated Towns & Forts: After liberating a town or fort, it will generate a small amount of gold over time. The more settlements you control, the greater your passive income. Remember to periodically collect these funds from the town's administrative menu.
Spending Gold Wisely
- Unit Recruitment: New recruits, especially unique characters, often require a one-time gold payment. Prioritize recruiting units that fill gaps in your army composition or offer powerful unique skills.
- Equipment Purchases: While battle drops provide much of your gear, shops in larger towns offer specific, often powerful, equipment that can significantly boost your units' capabilities. Focus on upgrading key units first.
- Class Promotions: Promoting a unit to an advanced class costs a substantial amount of gold, in addition to specific materials (see below). Plan your promotions carefully, focusing on units that will benefit most from the stat boosts and new skills.
- Consumables: Healing items, stat-boosting potions, and other consumables are vital for tough battles. Purchase these as needed, but avoid overstocking, as they can quickly drain your gold.
Renown: For the Greater Good
Renown is a unique currency that reflects your standing and influence in Fevrith. It's primarily used for expanding your army's capabilities and unlocking new features.
Acquiring Renown
- Liberating Towns & Forts: The most significant source of Renown. Each successful liberation grants a substantial amount.
- Completing Main & Side Quests: Many quests, especially those involving the liberation of regions or significant narrative events, reward Renown.
- Recruiting Unique Characters: Adding certain unique characters to your roster will also grant a small amount of Renown.
- Delivering Supplies: After liberating a town, you can often deliver specific crafting materials to its residents. Doing so will earn you a small amount of Renown and sometimes other rewards.
Spending Renown
- Increasing Unit Capacity: Renown is essential for increasing the maximum number of units you can deploy in a single battle. Prioritize this early on to field larger, more versatile armies.
- Expanding Unit Leaders: You'll use Renown to increase the number of units that can be assigned as leaders, allowing for more strategic deployment options.
- Unlocking New Features: Certain facilities or strategic options may require a Renown threshold to be met before they become available.
Crafting Materials: Beyond the Battlefield
Crafting materials are vital for upgrading equipment, promoting units, and completing town deliveries. These range from common ores to rare magical components.
Common Materials & Acquisition
- Iron Ore, Copper Ore, Silver Ore: Primarily found at mining points across the world map. Send units to these locations regularly.
- Pelts, Hides, Fangs: Dropped by various beast-type enemies in battles. Certain regions will have higher concentrations of specific animal types.
- Herbs, Berries, Flowers: Found as sparkling points on the world map, often in forests, plains, or near water sources.
- Wood, Stone: Gathered from specific resource points, typically marked by trees or rock formations.
Rare Materials & Acquisition
- Adamant, Mithril: Extremely rare ores found in late-game mining points or as drops from powerful boss enemies. Essential for crafting top-tier equipment.
- Griffin Feathers, Dragon Scales: Dropped by specific elite or unique enemy types. You'll often encounter these in challenging side quests or main story battles.
- Philosopher's Stone: A legendary material required for the highest tier of class promotions. Typically found as a reward for completing very difficult optional content or specific character quests.
Strategic Use of Materials
- Equipment Upgrades: Visit the blacksmith in liberated towns to upgrade your weapons and armor using various materials. Prioritize upgrading the gear of your main damage dealers and tanks.
- Class Promotions: Each class promotion requires specific materials in addition to gold. For example, promoting a Fighter to a Warrior might require Iron Ore and Pelts, while a more advanced promotion could demand Silver Ore and Griffin Feathers.
- Town Deliveries: Liberated towns will often request specific materials. Fulfilling these requests not only grants Renown but can also unlock new services, shops, or even unique items in that town.
Managing Your Inventory
Your inventory can quickly become cluttered with various items. Efficient management is key to staying organized and maximizing your resources.
- Regularly Sell Unused Gear: As mentioned, don't hoard equipment you won't use. Sell it for gold.
- Prioritize Crafting Materials: While you can sell excess common materials, always keep a healthy stock of rarer items for future upgrades and promotions.
- Utilize Storage: If you find yourself with too many items, you can store them in designated storage facilities in larger towns. This is particularly useful for rare materials you're saving for specific promotions.
- Check Shop Inventories: Periodically check the inventories of shops in different regions. They often stock unique items or materials that might be scarce elsewhere.
By diligently managing your gold, renown, and crafting materials, you'll ensure your army is always prepared for the challenges ahead, allowing you to focus on tactical prowess and leading the Liberation Army to victory.
