Character Recruitment Conditions

Recruiting the diverse cast of allies in Unicorn Overlord is crucial for building a formidable army. While many characters join your cause through story progression, several require specific actions, dialogue choices, or the completion of optional objectives. This section details the conditions for acquiring some of the most impactful and easily missed recruits.

Early Game Recruits

• Josef: Joins automatically during the tutorial mission, "The Awakening." No special conditions required.
• Lex: Joins automatically alongside Josef during "The Awakening."
• Chloe: Joins automatically after completing "The Awakening" and reaching the first town.
• Hodrick:
  • Mission: "A Princess's Plea" (Cornia).
  • Conditions: During the battle, you must defeat Hodrick's unit with Alain. After his defeat, a dialogue option will appear. Choose to "Spare him" to recruit him. If you choose to "Execute him," he will be permanently lost.

Mid-Game Recruits & Optional Paths

As you venture further into Fevrith, recruitment conditions become more nuanced. Pay close attention to character interactions and battlefield events.

Cornia Region

• Scarlett:
  • Mission: "The Priestess's Plight."
  • Conditions: Scarlett is a key story character and will join automatically upon the successful completion of this mission. Ensure her unit does not fall in battle.
• Clive:
  • Mission: "The General's Resolve."
  • Conditions: Clive is another story-critical character. He will join your forces after you successfully complete this mission and liberate the associated stronghold.
• Travis:
  • Mission: "The Mercenary's Contract" (Optional Side Mission).
  • Conditions: Locate Travis in the overworld near the ruins of a destroyed village in central Cornia. Initiate his side quest. Complete the mission by defeating the bandit leader. Travis will then offer to join your army.

Drakenhold Region

• Virginia:
  • Mission: "The Dragon's Legacy."
  • Conditions: Virginia is a central figure in the Drakenhold storyline. She will join your ranks after the successful completion of this main quest, provided you have made favorable choices towards her cause throughout the preceding Drakenhold missions.
• Aramis:
  • Mission: "The Desert's Fury" (Optional Side Mission).
  • Conditions: Aramis can be found in a hidden oasis in the northern part of Drakenhold. Speak to him to initiate his recruitment quest. You will need to bring him a specific item: Sunstone Shard. This item can be found in a treasure chest located in the "Sandfall Caverns" dungeon, accessible after liberating the nearby town of Kalt. Return the Sunstone Shard to Aramis to recruit him.

Late Game & Faction-Specific Recruits

Some characters may only become available much later in the game, or their recruitment might depend on your standing with certain factions or choices made in previous regions.

• Celeste:
  • Mission: "Whispers of the Fey" (Elheim Region).
  • Conditions: Celeste is a powerful magic-user. During the battle, you must protect the ancient tree she guards. After the battle, ensure you select the dialogue option that expresses understanding and empathy for her plight. She will then offer to join.
• Gilbert:
  • Mission: "The Royal Succession" (Albion Region).
  • Conditions: Gilbert's recruitment is tied to the political landscape of Albion. To recruit him, you must have successfully completed all preceding main story missions in Albion and sided with the legitimate claimant to the throne. He will join automatically after the final Albion main quest is resolved.

Important Note: Always explore every corner of the overworld, speak to all NPCs in liberated towns, and check notice boards for potential side quests. Many optional characters are tied to these activities. Some characters may also have mutually exclusive recruitment paths, so choose wisely!
