Late Game Strategies
Once you've established a strong economy and defended against initial rushes, the late game in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness shifts to overwhelming your opponent with superior forces and strategic assaults. This phase is all about resource management, advanced unit composition, and coordinated attacks.
Resource Management and Expansion
- Maintain Gold and Lumber Flow: By the late game, your initial Gold Mines will likely be depleted. Scout aggressively for new Gold Mines and establish additional Town Halls or Great Halls to expand your resource collection. Protect these expansions with towers (Guard Towers/Cannon Towers for Humans, Watch Towers/Ogre Mounds for Orcs) and a small contingent of ground units.
- Oil Rig Placement: If the map features water, securing Oil Patches with Oil Rigs is crucial for naval superiority. Build multiple Shipyards to churn out a powerful fleet.
- Upgrade Everything: Ensure all unit and building upgrades are completed. This includes:
- Blacksmith/Foundry: All weapon and armor upgrades (e.g., Swords, Shields, Axes, Chain Mail).
- Lumber Mill/Ogre Mound: Woodcutting upgrades.
- Keep/Castle (Humans): Advanced unit training and upgrades like Paladin training and Gryphon Rider training.
- Stronghold/Fortress (Orcs): Advanced unit training and upgrades like Ogre-Mage training and Dragon training.
- Temple of the Damned/Church: All spell upgrades for Mages/Death Knights and Paladins/Ogre-Mages.
Advanced Unit Composition and Tactics
The late game allows for powerful, diverse armies. Focus on combining units that complement each other's strengths and cover weaknesses.
Human Late Game Army Composition
- Frontline: A strong core of Knights and Paladins. Paladins are essential for their Holy Light healing and Exorcism against Death Knights.
- Ranged Support: Archers or Footmen (upgraded to Riflemen) provide ranged damage. Ballistas are excellent for siege and breaking through defenses.
- Air Superiority: Gryphon Riders are paramount. Their Storm Hammers deal massive damage to ground units and buildings, and they are crucial for countering enemy Dragons or other Gryphons.
- Spellcasters: Mages are invaluable.
- Blizzard: Devastating area-of-effect damage against clustered enemy units and buildings.
- Invisibility: Useful for scouting or sneaking in critical units.
- Polymorph: Instantly neutralizes a powerful enemy unit.
- Flame Shield: Protects high-value units.
- Naval Dominance: Battleships are the backbone of your fleet, supported by Destroyers for anti-air and Submarines for stealth attacks.
Orc Late Game Army Composition
- Frontline: Grunts and Ogres form a formidable melee line. Ogre-Mages with Bloodlust are devastating.
- Ranged Support: Axethrowers provide ranged damage. Catapults are your primary siege weapon.
- Air Superiority: Dragons are powerful flying units, especially with Firebreath. Use them to target enemy spellcasters, siege weapons, and air units.
- Spellcasters: Death Knights and Ogre-Mages are critical.
- Death Coil: Damages and heals, making it versatile.
- Raise Dead: Creates skeletons from fallen units, adding to your numbers.
- Haste: Speeds up critical units.
- Bloodlust: The most important Orc spell, significantly boosting attack damage for multiple units. Cast this on your Ogres and Grunts before engaging.
- Runes: Defensive traps for chokepoints.
- Naval Dominance: Juggernauts are the Orc equivalent of Battleships, supported by Destroyers and Submarines.
Coordinated Assaults
Never send units in piecemeal. Group your forces and attack in waves or as a single, overwhelming force.
- Ground Push with Air Support: Send your ground army to engage the enemy's main force while your Gryphon Riders/Dragons target their siege weapons, spellcasters, or key buildings (e.g., Barracks, Shipyards).
- Naval Bombardment: Use your Battleships/Juggernauts to soften up coastal defenses and buildings before landing ground troops.
- Spellcaster Synergy:
- Humans: Use Mages to cast Blizzard on enemy formations, then have Paladins charge in. Polymorph dangerous units like Ogre-Mages or Dragons.
- Orcs: Cast Bloodlust on your frontline units, then follow up with Death Coils from Death Knights to finish off weakened enemies or heal your own. Use Runes to protect flanks or retreat paths.
- Scouting and Harassment: Continuously scout with Flying Machines/Goblins to identify weaknesses or undefended expansions. Small groups of Raiders/Knights can harass resource lines or unprotected buildings.
Defensive Posture
Even when on the offensive, maintain strong defenses at your main base and expansions. A well-placed counter-attack can cripple your economy if you're not prepared.
- Tower Lines: Build multiple layers of Cannon Towers/Ogre Mounds around your Gold Mines and main base.
- Static Defense: Keep a reserve force of ground units and a few spellcasters at home to repel raids.
- Patrols: Set patrol routes for air units (Gryphons/Dragons) or fast ground units (Knights/Raiders) around your base perimeter.
