Mid Game Strategies
The mid-game in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is a crucial phase where you transition from establishing your base to asserting map control and preparing for decisive engagements. This period is characterized by expanding your economy, upgrading your units, and scouting for enemy weaknesses.
Economic Expansion and Resource Management
By mid-game, your initial Gold Mine will likely be depleted or nearing exhaustion. Proactive expansion is key to maintaining a strong economy.
- Establish New Gold Mines: Send a Peasant/Peon with a few Footmen/Grunt escorts to scout for new Gold Mines. Once found, immediately construct a new Town Hall/Great Hall and begin mining. Prioritize locations that are defensible or can be easily reinforced.
- Lumber Production: Ensure you have at least two Lumber Mills/Wood Mills operating efficiently. As your unit and building count grows, so does your lumber consumption. Consider building additional Lumber Mills near dense forest patches.
- Oil Refineries: If the map includes water, establishing Oil Refineries is paramount. Build a Shipyard/Orc Shipyard and then construct Oil Tankers to gather oil from Oil Patches. Oil is vital for advanced naval units like Battleships/Juggernauts and Submarines/Giant Turtles, as well as for certain high-tier land units.
Technological Advancement and Upgrades
Investing in upgrades at this stage provides a significant advantage in combat and resource gathering.
- Blacksmith/Foundry Upgrades: Prioritize upgrades like "Improved Swords" and "Steel Armor" at the Blacksmith (Humans) or "Improved Axes" and "Steel Plating" at the Foundry (Orcs). These directly enhance your melee units' effectiveness.
- Barracks/War Mill Upgrades: Research "Longbows" for Archers at the Barracks (Humans) or "Throwing Axes" for Axethrowers at the War Mill (Orcs) to boost ranged damage.
- Mage Tower/Temple of the Damned: Begin constructing these advanced spellcasting buildings.
- Humans: Train Mages and research spells like "Fireball" for offensive capabilities and "Blizzard" for area-of-effect damage. "Invisibility" can be useful for scouting or surprise attacks.
- Orcs: Train Ogre-Mages and research "Runes" for defensive traps and "Bloodlust" to significantly boost the attack power of your units. "Eye of Killrogg" is invaluable for scouting.
- Gryphon Aviary/Dragon Roost: If air superiority is a goal, start building these structures.
- Humans: Train Gryphon Riders. Research "Storm Hammers" to give them a powerful ranged attack.
- Orcs: Train Dragon Riders. Research "Firebreath" for increased damage.
Map Control and Scouting
Understanding enemy movements and controlling key map locations can turn the tide of battle.
- Persistent Scouting: Utilize fast, inexpensive units like Scouts (Humans) or Wolves (Orcs) to constantly patrol the map. Look for enemy expansions, troop movements, and resource gathering operations. Don't be afraid to sacrifice a scout to gain vital intelligence.
- Tower Defense: Construct Guard Towers/Watch Towers at choke points, around your expansions, and near your main base. Upgrade them to Cannon Towers/Guard Towers for increased firepower. These provide early warning and deter small enemy incursions.
- Naval Dominance (if applicable): If the map has water, building a strong navy is crucial. Destroy enemy transports to prevent landings and use Destroyers/Death Knights to patrol coastlines and harass enemy coastal buildings.
First Engagements and Harassment
While not yet committing to a full-scale assault, mid-game is ideal for probing enemy defenses and disrupting their economy.
- Small Strike Forces: Assemble groups of 6-8 upgraded Footmen/Grunts, supported by 2-3 Archers/Axethrowers, and perhaps a Mage/Ogre-Mage. Use these to raid enemy Lumber Mills, undefended Gold Mines, or isolated Peasant/Peon groups.
- Hit and Run Tactics: Focus on destroying key economic structures or vulnerable units, then retreat before the enemy can mount a strong counter-attack. The goal is to inflict damage and force the opponent to divert resources to defense.
- Siege Weapon Introduction: Consider building a Catapult/Ballista. While slow, these units are excellent for taking down enemy towers and buildings from a safe distance, softening up defenses for a later push.
