Defense Strategies
A strong offense is often the best defense, but neglecting your base's security in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is a recipe for disaster. This section will guide you through establishing robust defenses to repel enemy assaults and protect your vital resources.
Early Game Fortification: The Foundation
Your initial defense strategy is crucial for surviving early rushes and establishing a stable economy. Focus on these steps:
- Wall Placement: As soon as you have sufficient Lumber, begin constructing Walls around your primary resource locations (Gold Mine, Lumber Mill) and your Town Hall/Great Hall. Prioritize choke points and narrow passages leading to your base. Remember, walls are cheap and provide valuable time.
- Guard Towers/Watch Towers: Build at least two Guard Towers (Humans) or Watch Towers (Orcs) near your main entrance and any other vulnerable points. These provide early ranged attack capabilities and can deter small raiding parties. Upgrade them to Cannon Towers or Guard Towers (Orcs) as soon as your Blacksmith/Foundry is built and you have the resources.
- Militia/Grunt Patrols: Keep a small contingent of Footmen (Humans) or Grunts (Orcs) patrolling the immediate perimeter of your base. Two to three units are usually sufficient to intercept stray scouts or weak attacks.
Mid-Game Expansion and Layered Defense
As your base grows, so too should your defensive capabilities. Think in layers to maximize effectiveness.
Tower Networks
Strategically placed towers are your backbone. Consider these placements:
- Resource Outposts: If you expand to a new Gold Mine or Lumber Mill, immediately secure it with at least two Cannon Towers/Guard Towers and a few defensive units.
- Choke Points: Identify natural choke points on the map leading to your base and heavily fortify them with multiple towers. A cluster of 3-4 Cannon Towers/Guard Towers can decimate most ground assaults.
- Anti-Air Coverage: Once you anticipate air attacks (e.g., Gryphon Riders or Dragon Riders), ensure you have Ballistae (Humans) or Catapults (Orcs) positioned near your towers, or better yet, build Gnomish Flying Machines or Goblin Zeppelins for reconnaissance and air superiority.
Unit Composition for Defense
Don't rely solely on static defenses. A well-placed defensive force can turn the tide.
- Ranged Support: Archers (Humans) or Trolls (Orcs) positioned behind walls or towers can significantly increase your defensive firepower. Upgrade their Longbows/Throwing Axes at the Archery Range/Troll Axe Throwers for maximum effect.
- Melee Frontline: A small group of Knights (Humans) or Ogres (Orcs) can act as a mobile defense force, intercepting breaches and protecting your ranged units.
- Spellcasters: Mages (Humans) with Blizzard or Polymorph and Death Knights (Orcs) with Death Coil or Raise Dead can be devastating defensive assets, especially against clustered enemy units. Keep them protected behind your frontline.
Late Game and Advanced Defenses
In the late game, expect larger, more coordinated attacks. Your defenses must be equally sophisticated.
- Repair and Reinforce: Always have Peasants (Humans) or Peons (Orcs) on standby to repair damaged buildings, especially towers and walls. A constant flow of new units from your Barracks/War Mill and Stables/Ogre Mound is essential to replace losses.
- Naval Defense: If your base is coastal, build Battleships (Humans) or Juggernauts (Orcs) to patrol your shores. These powerful vessels can deter enemy landings and bombard approaching ground forces. Ensure you have a Shipyard and a Foundry/Oil Refinery for their construction and upgrades.
- Scouting and Counter-Attacks: The best defense is a good offense. Use Gryphon Riders or Dragon Riders to scout enemy movements. If you see a large force mobilizing, consider a preemptive strike on their resource lines or a flanking maneuver to relieve pressure on your base.
- Teleportation (Human Mages): A high-level Mage can use Teleport to quickly move defensive units to a threatened area, providing rapid reinforcement.
