Naval Unit Strategies
Naval combat in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is often overlooked but can be absolutely decisive, especially on maps with significant water features. Mastering your fleet can grant you map control, resource denial, and a powerful offensive edge.Establishing Naval Dominance
The key to a strong navy begins with early exploration and resource gathering. You'll need a Shipyard (Humans) or a Shipyard (Orcs) to begin construction. These require a Barracks (Humans) or a Barracks (Orcs) and a Lumber Mill (Humans) or a Lumber Mill (Orcs) respectively. Prioritize building your Shipyard in a defensible location, ideally near your main base or a secondary resource node.
- Early Game Scouting: Build a single Transport (Humans) or Transport (Orcs) early to scout coastal areas and potential enemy naval bases. This provides crucial intelligence without a significant resource investment.
- Resource Control: Identify and secure oil patches. Oil Rigs (Humans) or Oil Rigs (Orcs) are vital for sustained naval production and upgrades. Protect these rigs with a few Destroyers (Humans) or Destroyers (Orcs) or even a Battle Ship (Humans) or Battleship (Orcs) once available.
- Harbor Defense: Never leave your Shipyard undefended. A few Towers (Guard Tower/Cannon Tower for Humans, Watch Tower/Guard Tower for Orcs) along the coastline can deter early enemy naval raids.
Unit Composition and Tactics
A balanced fleet is essential. Relying on a single unit type will leave you vulnerable.
- Destroyers (Humans) / Destroyers (Orcs): These are your workhorses. They are fast, relatively inexpensive, and excel at anti-air and anti-ship combat. Build them in groups of 3-5 for effective engagements. Use their speed to harass enemy oil rigs or transports.
- Battleships (Humans) / Battleships (Orcs): The heavy hitters of your fleet. Battleships boast powerful long-range cannons, making them ideal for coastal bombardment and taking down enemy structures. They are slow and expensive, so protect them with Destroyers.
- Coastal Bombardment: Position Battleships just outside the range of enemy coastal defenses (Towers, Catapults/Ballistas) and systematically destroy them. This clears the way for ground assaults or further naval advances.
- Anti-Ship Role: While slower, their heavy armor and powerful attacks make them formidable against other ships. Focus fire on enemy Battleships first.
- Submarines (Humans) / Submarines (Orcs): The stealthy assassins of the sea. Submarines are invisible unless detected by Destroyers or specific spells. They are excellent for ambushes and disrupting enemy supply lines.
- Ambushes: Position Submarines along common enemy transport routes or near their oil rigs. When an enemy vessel passes, surface and attack.
- Scouting: Use a single Submarine to covertly scout enemy coastal defenses and fleet movements.
- Countering Submarines: If you suspect enemy Submarines, patrol with Destroyers. Their sonar ability reveals submerged units.
- Transports (Humans) / Transports (Orcs): While not combat units, Transports are crucial for amphibious assaults and establishing new bases.
- Amphibious Assaults: Load Transports with a mix of melee and ranged ground units (e.g., Footmen/Grunts, Archers/Axethrowers, Mages/Ogre-Mages). Land them on undefended enemy coastlines to create a new front or raid their resource operations.
- Diversions: Send a small group of Transports to a distant, less defended area to draw enemy attention while your main force attacks elsewhere.
Upgrades and Maintenance
Always invest in naval upgrades at the Shipyard. These include:
- Ship Armor: Increases the durability of all your naval units.
- Ship Cannons: Boosts the attack power of Destroyers and Battleships.
- Submarine Sonar (Humans) / Submarine Sonar (Orcs): Improves the detection range of your Destroyers against Submarines.
Remember to repair damaged ships at your Shipyard to maximize their lifespan and save resources.
