Leveling Tips — Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Guide

Get efficient leveling tips for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. Ascend from recruit to veteran by prioritizing mission objectives and unlocking talents.

Leveling Tips

Welcome, prospective Rejects, to the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium! Leveling up your character in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is crucial for unlocking powerful talents, better gear, and higher difficulty missions. This guide will walk you through the most efficient strategies to ascend from a fresh recruit to a seasoned veteran of the Emperor's service.

Prioritize Mission Objectives & Secondary Conditions

While slaying hordes of Heretics and Traitors is satisfying, your primary source of experience (XP) comes from completing mission objectives. Always focus on these first. Additionally, many missions feature secondary objectives that offer a significant XP bonus upon completion. These often involve collecting specific items or performing certain actions:

  • Grimoires: These cursed tomes reduce your maximum Toughness but grant a substantial XP and Ordo Dockets (currency) bonus. There are typically 1-2 Grimoires per mission. Coordinate with your team to ensure you can handle the reduced survivability.
  • Scriptures: Unlike Grimoires, Scriptures do not impose a debuff. They are often found in more hidden locations and also provide a good chunk of XP and Dockets. There are usually 3 Scriptures per mission.

Actively seeking out and completing these secondary objectives, especially Grimoires, will drastically accelerate your leveling process. Use our Darktide Maps to pinpoint their exact locations on each mission.

Difficulty Scales XP Rewards

The higher the difficulty you play on, the more experience you will gain. However, don't bite off more than you can chew. Dying repeatedly on a higher difficulty will net you less XP than successfully completing a mission on a slightly lower one. Here's a general progression:

  1. Uprising (Difficulty 2): A good starting point once you've completed the tutorial and a few introductory missions.
  2. Malice (Difficulty 3): Once you're comfortable with your chosen class and have a few talents unlocked, Malice offers a significant XP boost without being overwhelmingly difficult for a coordinated team. This is often the sweet spot for efficient leveling in the mid-game (levels 10-20).
  3. Heresy (Difficulty 4) & Damnation (Difficulty 5): These difficulties offer the highest XP rewards but require strong gear, fully developed talent trees, and excellent team synergy. Only attempt these when you feel confident in your abilities and your team's composition.

Experiment with different difficulties to find the highest one you can consistently complete with your current gear and skill level.

Embrace Weekly Contracts

Upon reaching the Mourningstar, you'll gain access to Weekly Contracts offered by the various factions. These contracts provide a substantial amount of XP and other rewards upon completion. Always check your contracts at the start of your play session and try to integrate them into your mission choices. Examples include:

  • "Kill X amount of Dreg Shooters"
  • "Complete X missions on Difficulty 3 or higher"
  • "Collect X Grimoires"

These contracts often align with efficient leveling strategies anyway, making them a natural fit for maximizing your XP gains.

use the Armory Exchange for Quick Power Spikes

While leveling, you'll constantly be finding new gear. Don't be afraid to visit the Armory Exchange (located on the Mourningstar) frequently. Even minor upgrades to your weapon's rating can significantly boost your damage output and survivability, allowing you to tackle higher difficulties more effectively. Prioritize:

  • Weapon Rating: A higher rating generally means better base stats.
  • Blessings and Perks: Look for blessings that synergize with your class and playstyle (e.g., "Flak" for Veteran's Lasgun, "Shred" for Zealot's Chainsword).

You don't need perfect gear while leveling, but keeping your loadout reasonably up-to-date will make a noticeable difference.

Team Composition and Synergy

Playing with a balanced team can make a huge difference in mission success and thus, XP gain. While not strictly a leveling "tip," a well-rounded team can handle various threats more effectively, leading to fewer wipes and more completed missions. Consider:

  • Veteran: Excellent ranged damage and special/elite clear.
  • Zealot: Strong melee damage, good for clearing hordes and dealing with armored enemies.
  • Ogryn: Tanky, great crowd control, and can protect allies.
  • Psyker: Versatile, with powerful ranged attacks, crowd control, and brain burst for high-priority targets.

Even if you're not playing with friends, try to adapt your playstyle to complement your random teammates. A successful mission is always more rewarding than a failed one.

Don't Forget Your Talents!

Every time you level up, you gain a talent point. Immediately allocate these points to unlock powerful abilities and passive bonuses that enhance your character's effectiveness. Refer to our Class Builds Guide for optimized talent trees for each archetype. A well-chosen talent can dramatically improve your performance and make higher difficulties more manageable.
