Armor & Gear
In the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium, survival in Darktide is as much about the gear you wear as the skills you wield. Armor and gear are your primary line of defense, offering crucial protection against the myriad threats of Tertium. Understanding the different types of armor, their stats, and how to acquire and upgrade them is paramount to your success on the battlefield. Your loadout is more than just aesthetics; it's a vital component of your combat effectiveness.
Your character's base armor is determined by their class, but the true customization and power come from the gear you equip. This includes your primary and secondary weapons, your force sword (for Psykers), and most importantly, your Curios. Curios are special trinkets that provide passive bonuses and can sificantly alter your playstyle and survivability. They offer resistances to different damage types (e.g., Flak, Carapace, Unyielding), stat boosts (e.g., Toughness regeneration, ammo capacity), and even unique effects. The rarity of a Curio, indicated by its color (Grey, Green, Blue, Orange, Red), directly correlates to the potency and number of its blessings and perks.
Acquiring new gear is a multi-faceted process. The most common way is through the Shrine of the Omnissiah, where you can purchase weapons and curios using Plasteel and Diamantine. The stock at the Shrine refreshes regularly, so checking it often is a good habit. Missions themselves also offer gear as rewards upon completion, with higher difficulties and completed secondary objectives yielding better quality items. The Emperor's Gift, a special vendor, offers a rotating selection of high-quality gear, often with unique blessings, for those with sufficient resources and a bit of luck.
When evaluating gear, pay close attention to its stats. Weapons have base damage, impact, fire rate, and special properties like stagger or cleave. Armor, represented by your Toughness and its regeneration rate, is crucial for mitigating damage. Curios offer several resistances and buffs. The key is to build a synergistic loadout. For example, a melee-focused character might prioritize weapons with high stagger and blessings that enhance their close-quarters combat, while equipping curios that boost Toughness regeneration and resistance to melee damage. A ranged specialist might focus on weapons with high accuracy and ammo efficiency, paired with curios that increase ranged damage or provide defensive buffs against ranged threats.
Upgrading your gear is done at the Ordo Machinum. Here, you can spend Plasteel to increase the base stats of your weapons and curios, and Diamantine to unlock and upgrade their Blessings. Blessings are powerful passive effects that can dramatically change how a weapon or Curio functions. For example, a Blessing might increase your critical hit chance, grant temporary invulnerability on kill, or provide a sificant boost to your resistances. Experimenting with different gear combinations and upgrades is essential to finding the optimal build for your chosen class and playstyle.
