Enemy Weaknesses & Strengths
Understanding your adversary is paramount to success in XCOM 2. Each ADVENT and alien unit presents unique tactical challenges and opportunities. Exploiting their weaknesses while mitigating their strengths is the cornerstone of effective combat.
ADVENT Troopers & Variants
- Strengths:
- Numbers: Often appear in large pods, overwhelming XCOM with sheer volume of fire.
- Suppression: ADVENT Troopers and Captains frequently use suppression, pinning down your soldiers and reducing their accuracy.
- Grenades: ADVENT Grenadiers can destroy cover and inflict area-of-effect damage, forcing repositioning.
- Weaknesses:
- Low HP: Standard Troopers have relatively low health, making them susceptible to focused fire.
- Flanking: They are easily flanked, granting significant aim bonuses to your soldiers.
- Mind Control (Captain): ADVENT Captains, while dangerous with their Mark ability, are vulnerable to psionic attacks like Mind Control, turning them against their allies.
- Strategy: Prioritize Grenadiers to preserve cover. Use Rangers with Shotguns for close-range flanking maneuvers. Specialists can hack turrets and Sectopods to turn them against ADVENT.
Sectoids
- Strengths:
- Mindspin: Can panic or disorient your soldiers, disrupting your turn.
- Psi Reanimate: Can reanimate fallen ADVENT soldiers or even civilians as zombies, adding to enemy numbers.
- Weaknesses:
- Low HP: Similar to Troopers, Sectoids are squishy.
- Vulnerable to Flashbangs: Flashbang Grenades are incredibly effective, breaking their Mindspin and Psi Reanimate abilities, and often causing them to panic.
- Strategy: Always carry Flashbang Grenades. A single Flashbang can neutralize a Sectoid's threat for a turn, allowing you to focus fire or deal with other threats.
Vipers
- Strengths:
- Tongue Pull: Can pull soldiers out of cover and into close range for a Bind attack.
- Bind: Inflicts damage over time and immobilizes a soldier, making them a priority target.
- Poison Spit: Area-of-effect poison that damages and disorients.
- Weaknesses:
- Vulnerable to Melee: Rangers with swords can deal significant damage and often finish them in one hit.
- Flashbangs: Disrupts their Tongue Pull and Bind abilities.
- Shredder: Their armor can be shredded, making them easier to damage.
- Strategy: Keep your soldiers spread out to avoid multi-target Poison Spit. If a soldier is bound, prioritize freeing them immediately with focused fire or a Ranger's sword.
Mutons
- Strengths:
- High HP & Armor: Can absorb a lot of damage.
- Bayonet Charge: Powerful melee attack that can disorient.
- Grenades: Can destroy cover.
- Counterattack: If damaged by an attack within 4 tiles, they will counterattack with their plasma rifle.
- Weaknesses:
- Vulnerable to Psionics: Mind Control, Stasis, and Insanity are highly effective.
- Flashbangs: Prevents their Counterattack and reduces aim.
- Shredder: Essential for stripping their armor.
- Strategy: Engage Mutons at range to avoid their Counterattack. Use Grenadiers to shred their armor before following up with high-damage attacks. Psionics are invaluable for crowd control.
Andromedons
- Strengths:
- High HP & Heavy Armor: Extremely durable.
- Acid Bomb: Destroys cover and inflicts damage over time.
- Melee Attack: Powerful close-range attack.
- Second Form: Upon defeat, the Andromedon Suit becomes an autonomous unit with a melee attack and high HP.
- Weaknesses:
- Slow Movement: Can be kited.
- Vulnerable to Hacking (Suit): The Andromedon Suit can be hacked, potentially turning it against other enemies.
- Shredder: Absolutely critical for dealing with their heavy armor.
- Strategy: Focus fire to take down the pilot quickly. Be prepared to deal with the suit immediately afterward. Use Grenadiers with Shredder and Volatile Mix to maximize armor penetration. Specialists can attempt to hack the suit for a powerful, albeit temporary, ally.
Gatekeepers
- Strengths:
- High HP & Armor: Very tanky.
- Gateway: Area-of-effect attack that can reanimate multiple corpses.
- Consume: Can instantly kill a soldier and heal itself.
- Psi Drain: Damages and disorients multiple targets.
- Weaknesses:
- Vulnerable to Hacking: Can be hacked for temporary control or damage.
- Shredder: Essential for dealing with their armor.
- Explosives: Can destroy multiple reanimated zombies at once.
- Strategy: Prioritize Gatekeepers to prevent them from reanimating a horde of zombies. Use Grenadiers to shred armor and then follow up with high-damage attacks. A well-placed Specialist hack can turn the tide. Keep your soldiers spread out to minimize the impact of Gateway and Psi Drain.
Sectopods
- Strengths:
- Massive HP & Heavy Armor: The toughest non-boss unit in the game.
- Area Suppression: Can suppress multiple soldiers.
- Wrath Cannon: Devastating area-of-effect attack.
- Cluster Missile: Launches multiple explosive projectiles.
- Weaknesses:
- Vulnerable to Hacking: A successful hack can disable it for a turn or even turn it against ADVENT.
- Shredder: Absolutely mandatory to deal any meaningful damage.
- EMP Grenades/Bombs: Highly effective at disabling and damaging Sectopods.
- Exposed Vent (after damage): After taking enough damage, a vent opens, making it vulnerable to critical hits.
- Strategy: This is a boss-level encounter. Bring multiple Grenadiers with Shredder and EMP Grenades. Specialists should prioritize hacking attempts. Focus all available firepower on it once its armor is stripped. Use Mimic Beacons to draw fire away from your soldiers.
Avatars
- Strengths:
- Teleportation: Highly mobile, making them difficult to pin down.
- Mind Control: Can turn your soldiers against you.
- Null Lance: Powerful linear area-of-effect attack.
- Mass Gate: Summons powerful alien reinforcements.
- Weaknesses:
- Low HP (for a final boss): Surprisingly fragile once you can hit them.
- Vulnerable to Psionics: Can be Stasised, Mind Controlled (briefly), or Insanitied.
- Focus Fire: Despite their abilities, they can be quickly eliminated with concentrated damage.
- Strategy: The final boss. Prioritize eliminating the Avatar as quickly as possible. Use Stasis to buy time, then unleash all your high-damage abilities. Rangers with Run & Gun + Rapid Fire, Sharpshooters with Serial/Fan Fire, and Grenadiers with Salvo + Rupture are key. Ignore most reinforcements unless they directly threaten your Avatar-killing efforts.
