Stealth & Concealment

In XCOM 2, maintaining concealment is paramount to controlling engagements and minimizing casualties. Unlike its predecessor, XCOM 2 often starts missions with your squad concealed, offering a crucial tactical advantage. Understanding how to leverage and preserve this state is key to success.

Understanding Concealment

Concealment is a powerful mechanic that allows your squad to move undetected by enemy patrols. While concealed, Advent units will follow their patrol routes, oblivious to your presence. This provides opportunities for strategic positioning, ambushes, and even bypassing certain enemy pods entirely.

  • Initial Concealment: Most missions begin with your entire squad concealed. This is your prime opportunity to set up the perfect ambush.
  • Breaking Concealment: Concealment is broken when:
    • An enemy unit spots one of your soldiers within their vision cone.
    • You attack an enemy unit.
    • You use certain abilities that explicitly state they break concealment (e.g., a Grenadier's 'Launch Grenade' ability, if not used from a specific perk).
    • You open a door or interact with certain mission objectives (though some objectives can be interacted with while maintaining concealment, check the UI carefully).
  • Partial Concealment: Even after breaking initial concealment, individual soldiers can regain it through specific abilities or items.

Leveraging Initial Concealment

The start of a mission is often the most critical phase. Use your initial concealment to scout, position, and plan your first strike.

  1. Scout Ahead:
    • Designate a fast-moving unit, ideally a Ranger with the 'Phantom' perk, to move ahead of the main squad. This unit can safely reveal enemy positions without breaking the rest of the squad's concealment.
    • Utilize the 'Battle Scanner' item (available from the Proving Grounds after researching 'Advanced Warfare Systems') to reveal enemy positions from a distance. Throw it into areas you suspect contain enemy pods.
  2. Flank and Position:
    • Once enemy pods are identified, maneuver your concealed squad to gain advantageous flanking positions. High ground bonuses are invaluable.
    • Position your Grenadiers to hit multiple targets with grenades.
    • Set up your Sharpshooters on rooftops or other elevated positions for clear lines of sight.
  3. Initiate the Ambush:
    • The ideal first move is often an area-of-effect (AoE) attack, like a grenade, to damage multiple enemies and destroy their cover.
    • Follow up with high-damage attacks from your concealed units. Remember, the first shot from a concealed unit often has a higher hit chance or critical chance bonus.
    • Consider using 'Overwatch' on your remaining actions to catch any enemies that survive the initial assault and move into exposed positions.

Maintaining and Regaining Concealment

Soldier Abilities & Perks

  • Ranger - Phantom: This is a cornerstone perk for stealth. A Ranger with 'Phantom' starts every mission concealed, even if the rest of the squad breaks concealment. This allows them to continue scouting or repositioning. Upgrade to 'Conceal' for the ability to re-enter concealment mid-mission.
  • Reaper - Shadow: Reapers are the masters of stealth. Their 'Shadow' ability grants them permanent concealment until they attack. They can even attack from 'Shadow' without breaking it, though subsequent attacks will break it. Their 'Silent Killer' perk allows them to kill enemies without breaking 'Shadow' if the attack is lethal.
  • Specialist - Combat Protocol: While not directly a stealth ability, 'Combat Protocol' can be used to destroy weak cover or finish off exposed enemies without risking a shot that might miss and reveal your position prematurely.

Gear & Items

  • Battle Scanner: As mentioned, invaluable for scouting without breaking concealment. Research 'Advanced Warfare Systems' in the Proving Grounds to unlock.
  • Mimic Beacon: While not a stealth item itself, the Mimic Beacon can draw enemy fire, allowing your concealed units to reposition or set up a devastating follow-up attack while the enemy is distracted.
  • Skulljack: Using the Skulljack on a Stun Lancer or Officer will break concealment for the soldier performing the action, but it provides valuable intel and can instantly kill the target. Weigh the pros and cons.

Environmental Factors

  • High Cover: Always prioritize moving your units into high cover. While it doesn't grant concealment, it significantly reduces the chance of being hit once concealment is broken.
  • Fog of War: Use the Fog of War to your advantage. Enemies cannot see through it, allowing you to move around their flanks or reposition without being detected, even if you are not technically "concealed."
  • Line of Sight (LoS): Pay close attention to enemy LoS indicators. The yellow cones show where enemies are looking. Avoid these at all costs while concealed.

Advanced Stealth Tactics

  • The "Pull" Maneuver: With a 'Phantom' Ranger or Reaper, you can intentionally reveal a single enemy pod by moving into their LoS, then immediately retreating to a safe position. This pulls the enemy pod towards your main, concealed squad, allowing for a controlled ambush on your terms.
  • Objective Prioritization: On timed missions, sometimes bypassing an enemy pod entirely with a concealed unit (like a Reaper) to reach an objective is more valuable than engaging in a full firefight.
  • Exploiting Patrol Routes: Observe enemy patrol patterns. Often, you can move your entire squad through areas that enemies have just cleared, or position them to intercept a patrol as it moves into a vulnerable position.
  • Grenade First: When initiating an ambush, a well-placed grenade from a Grenadier (especially with 'Volatile Mix' and 'Saturation Fire') can clear out cover and soften up multiple enemies before your other units even fire a shot. This maximizes the impact of your concealed alpha strike.

Mastering stealth and concealment is a core skill in XCOM 2. By understanding its mechanics and utilizing the right soldier abilities and gear, you can turn the tide of battle in your favor, even against overwhelming odds.
