VIP Extraction Missions
VIP Extraction missions in XCOM 2 present a unique tactical challenge, often requiring a blend of stealth, aggressive maneuvering, and precise execution. Your primary objective is to locate a designated VIP, escort them to an extraction zone, and keep them alive throughout the ordeal. These missions can quickly spiral out of control if not approached with a clear strategy.
Pre-Mission Preparation
- Squad Composition: A balanced squad is crucial. Consider bringing:
- At least one Specialist for hacking objectives (doors, turrets, ADVENT terminals) and healing. The 'Medical Protocol' ability is invaluable for keeping the VIP healthy.
- A Ranger with 'Phantom' or 'Conceal' for scouting ahead and potentially reaching the VIP undetected. Their 'Run and Gun' ability is excellent for quick repositioning.
- A Grenadier for area denial, destroying cover, and dealing with clustered enemies. 'Volatile Mix' and 'Salvo' are strong choices.
- A Sharpshooter (especially a Gunslinger build) can provide crucial overwatch and long-range support, picking off threats before they become a problem.
- Gear Selection:
- Medikits: Equip at least two, preferably on your Specialist and another soldier. The VIP can take damage, and quick healing is essential.
- Flashbang Grenades: Excellent for disorienting enemies, especially Sectoids and Stun Lancers, preventing them from using abilities or closing the distance.
- Smoke Grenades: Provide crucial defensive cover for your squad and the VIP during exposed movements or while waiting for extraction.
- Battle Scanners: Useful for revealing hidden enemies, especially Faceless or ambushes, before you commit your squad.
- Mimic Beacons: A game-changer for drawing enemy fire away from your squad and the VIP, buying you precious turns.
Initial Infiltration and VIP Location
Most VIP extraction missions begin with your squad in concealment. Use this to your advantage:
- Scout Ahead: Send your Ranger (if they have 'Phantom' or 'Conceal') or a Battle Scanner to cautiously scout the immediate area. Identify enemy patrols and potential routes to the VIP.
- Maintain Concealment: Avoid breaking concealment prematurely. The fewer pods you activate before reaching the VIP, the better. Plan your movement to avoid enemy sightlines.
- Identify the VIP's Location: The VIP will be marked on your HUD. Often, they are held within a building or a fortified area, sometimes guarded by a small pod of ADVENT soldiers.
- Approach Strategy: Once you have a general idea of the VIP's location and surrounding patrols, plan your approach. Look for flanking routes or ways to isolate smaller enemy groups.
Securing the VIP
Once you've reached the VIP's location, the mission often shifts from stealth to direct engagement:
- Breach and Clear: If the VIP is inside a building, consider breaching a wall with a Grenadier's explosive or using a door. Try to clear the immediate area of enemies before interacting with the VIP.
- Activate the VIP: A soldier must move adjacent to the VIP to "activate" them. Once activated, the VIP will follow the activating soldier. Keep in mind the VIP has limited movement and no combat abilities.
- Prioritize Threats: After activating the VIP, new enemy pods may activate or existing patrols may converge. Prioritize high-threat enemies like Stun Lancers (who can incapacitate the VIP), Sectoids (for mind control), and Mutons.
Escorting to Extraction
The journey to the extraction zone is often the most dangerous part. The extraction zone will be marked on your HUD and typically appears after the VIP is secured.
- Form a Protective Formation: Position your soldiers to protect the VIP. A common strategy is to have the VIP move in the middle of your squad, with soldiers providing cover on all sides.
- Use Overwatches: As you move, set up overwatch traps, especially around corners or chokepoints where enemies are likely to appear.
- Smoke and Flashbangs: Don't hesitate to use Smoke Grenades to create temporary cover for the VIP and your squad, especially if you need to cross open ground. Flashbangs can buy you critical turns against aggressive enemies.
- Mind the Turn Timer: Some VIP extractions have a turn timer. Keep an eye on it and adjust your pace accordingly. If time is short, you may need to push more aggressively.
- Clear the Extraction Zone: Before moving the VIP into the extraction zone, ensure it is clear of enemies. The last thing you want is for the VIP to be shot down as they are about to leave.
- Final Extraction: Once the VIP is in the extraction zone, they will automatically extract at the end of the current turn. Ensure all your soldiers are also in the zone if you want them to extract. If not, they will remain on the map to continue fighting or extract on a subsequent turn.
Advanced Tactics
- Remote Hacking: If the VIP is behind a locked door or guarded by a turret, a Specialist with 'Remote Hacking' can be invaluable, potentially opening the way or disabling threats without breaking concealment.
- Concealed Extraction: In some rare cases, if you manage to keep your entire squad concealed until the VIP is activated, you might be able to move the VIP to extraction without ever breaking concealment, trivializing the mission. This is highly situational and difficult to pull off consistently.
- Mimic Beacon Placement: When using a Mimic Beacon, place it strategically to draw fire away from the VIP and your most vulnerable soldiers. It's a powerful tool for crowd control.
Remember, adaptability is key. XCOM 2's procedural generation means no two missions are exactly alike. Be prepared to adjust your strategy on the fly based on enemy placements and terrain.
