Squad Composition & Synergy

Building an effective squad in XCOM 2 is paramount to success. It's not just about bringing your highest-ranked soldiers; it's about creating a cohesive unit where each member's abilities complement the others, maximizing your tactical options and minimizing risk. This section will guide you through optimal squad compositions and highlight crucial synergies.

Core Principles of Squad Building

  • Balance is Key: Aim for a mix of damage, control, support, and utility. A squad heavy on one aspect will struggle against diverse ADVENT threats.
  • Cover All Ranges: Ensure you have soldiers effective at close, medium, and long range. This prevents being outmaneuvered by enemy positioning.
  • Action Economy: Prioritize abilities that grant extra actions, free actions, or allow multiple soldiers to act in a single turn.
  • Contingency Planning: Always consider what happens if one of your key soldiers goes down. Can the rest of the squad adapt?

Standard Squad Archetypes (4-6 Soldiers)

While mission objectives and enemy types will influence your final choices, these archetypes provide a strong foundation:

Early Game (4 Soldiers)

In the early stages, resources are scarce, and your soldier pool is limited. Focus on reliable damage and basic utility.

  • 1 Ranger: Essential for scouting with Phantom (if chosen) and close-quarters damage with the Shotgun. Their Slash ability is invaluable for finishing off weakened enemies or breaking line of sight. Equip with a Flashbang Grenade for early crowd control.
  • 1 Specialist: Your primary healer and hacker. Medical Protocol is a must. Early on, their Gremlin can also provide crucial Aid Protocol for defensive buffs. Equip with a Smoke Grenade for emergency cover.
  • 1 Sharpshooter: Provides long-range damage and overwatch support. Position them on high ground whenever possible. The Squadsight perk is a game-changer. Equip with a Frag Grenade for environmental destruction or area denial.
  • 1 Grenadier: Area-of-effect damage and cover destruction. Shredder is excellent against armored targets. Blast Padding is a strong defensive choice. Equip with two Frag Grenades or one Frag Grenade and one Incendiary Grenade for versatile destruction.

Mid-Game (5-6 Soldiers)

As your roster grows and you unlock more advanced classes, you can specialize further and introduce more complex synergies.

  • Option 1: The "Overwatch Trap" Squad (6 Soldiers)
    • 1 Ranger (Blademaster/Run & Gun): Close-range finisher, flanked enemy hunter.
    • 1 Specialist (Combat Hacker/Medic): Primary healer, Gremlin for hacking objectives or Combat Protocol damage.
    • 2 Sharpshooters (Gunslinger/Sniper): One with Lightning Hands and Quickdraw for multi-shot turns, the other with Squadsight and Long Watch for overwatch dominance.
    • 2 Grenadiers (Demolitionist/Heavy Gunner): Focus on cover destruction and suppressing fire. Volatile Mix and Salvo are excellent.
    • Synergy: The Grenadiers destroy cover, forcing enemies into the open. The Sharpshooters, especially with Long Watch, then pick them off with powerful overwatch shots. The Ranger cleans up anything that gets too close.
  • Option 2: The "Control & Flank" Squad (6 Soldiers)
    • 1 Ranger (Concealment/Run & Gun): Scouts ahead, sets up flanks, or uses Reaper for multi-kills.
    • 1 Specialist (Medic/Hacker): Heals, buffs with Aid Protocol, and hacks objectives.
    • 1 Sharpshooter (Gunslinger): Focuses on pistol skills for consistent damage and utility (e.g., Fan Fire).
    • 1 Grenadier (Demolitionist): Cover destruction and area denial.
    • 1 Psi Operative: Crucial for crowd control (Stasis, Mind Control), area damage (Null Lance), and defensive buffs (Inspire).
    • 1 Technical (DLC - Spark/Templar/Reaper):
      • SPARK: Tanking, heavy weapon damage, and area suppression.
      • Templar: Melee damage, mobility, and Parry for defense.
      • Reaper: Unrivaled scouting with Shadow, powerful single-target damage with Banish.
    • Synergy: The Ranger and Technical (Reaper) provide intel. The Psi Operative locks down dangerous enemies, allowing the Grenadier to destroy cover and the Sharpshooter/Ranger to flank for high-percentage shots. The Specialist keeps everyone healthy.

Key Synergies and Item Loadouts

Ranger & Grenadier

  • Synergy: The Grenadier's ability to destroy cover with Frag Grenades or Plasma Grenades leaves enemies exposed. A Ranger with Run & Gun can then close the distance and deliver devastating shotgun blasts with a high hit chance, or use Slash to finish off multiple targets.
  • Loadout:
    • Ranger: Shotgun (Plasma/Beam), Katana (Fusion Blade), Advanced Scope, Hair Trigger, Perception PCS.
    • Grenadier: Cannon (Plasma/Beam), Grenade Launcher, Blaster Launcher (late game), Incendiary Bomb, Bluescreen Protocol, Superior Explosive Vest.

Specialist & Sharpshooter

  • Synergy: A Specialist using Aid Protocol can grant a Sharpshooter extra defense, allowing them to take riskier shots or hold a vital position. A Combat Hacker Specialist can soften up robotic enemies for the Sharpshooter's high-damage shots, especially with Bluescreen Rounds.
  • Loadout:
    • Specialist: Assault Rifle (Plasma/Beam), Gremlin (Mk. III), Medikit (Superior), Battle Scanner, Speed PCS.
    • Sharpshooter: Sniper Rifle (Plasma/Beam), Pistol (Magnum/Plasma), Laser Sight, Stock, Focus PCS.

Psi Operative & Any Damage Dealer

  • Synergy: The Psi Operative's Stasis ability can completely neutralize a dangerous enemy for a turn, buying time for your squad to reposition or eliminate other threats. Mind Control can turn an enemy against its allies, creating chaos and extra firepower. Once an enemy is controlled or weakened, any damage dealer can finish them off.
  • Loadout:
    • Psi Operative: Psi Amp (Warden), Assault Rifle (Plasma/Beam), Mind Shield, Flashbang Grenade, Will PCS.

Reaper & Blaster Launcher Grenadier

  • Synergy: The Reaper's unparalleled scouting with Shadow allows them to pinpoint large groups of enemies without breaking concealment. This intel is invaluable for a Grenadier equipped with a Blaster Launcher (unlocked via the Proving Grounds after researching Advanced Explosives). The Grenadier can then fire a guided rocket from outside enemy vision, obliterating entire pods before they even react.
  • Loadout:
    • Reaper: Vektor Rifle (Plasma), Claymore (Plasma), Superior Scope, Hair Trigger, Perception PCS.
    • Grenadier: Cannon (Plasma/Beam), Grenade Launcher, Blaster Launcher, Incendiary Bomb, Bluescreen Protocol, Superior Explosive Vest.

Advanced Considerations

  • Cover Destruction: Always have multiple ways to destroy cover. Grenadiers are prime for this, but a Sharpshooter with Lightning Hands and a pistol can also chip away at light cover.
  • Mobility: Utilize perks like Run & Gun (Ranger), Lightning Hands (Sharpshooter), and Reaper (Ranger) to maximize your squad's movement and action economy. A Speed PCS or Mobility Vest can also be beneficial.
  • Status Effects: Don't underestimate the power of status effects. Incendiary Grenades for burning, Flashbangs for disorientation, and Acid Grenades (from Alien Hunters DLC) for armor shred and damage over time can turn the tide of battle.
  • Psi Operatives: Once available, Psi Operatives are almost always a strong inclusion. Their versatility in control, damage, and support is unmatched. Prioritize training them early.
  • DLC Classes: If you have the Alien Hunters or Shen's Last Gift DLC, consider integrating the new classes. Reapers are exceptional scouts, Skirmishers offer unique mobility and action economy, and Templars are powerful melee specialists. SPARKs provide heavy firepower and tanking capabilities.

By carefully considering these compositions and synergies, you'll be well-equipped to face the ADVENT threat and reclaim Earth for humanity.
