Soldier Progression & Promotion

Understanding and optimizing your soldiers' progression is paramount to success in XCOM 2. Each soldier is a valuable asset, and their development from a rookie to a seasoned veteran can turn the tide of any engagement. This section will guide you through the intricacies of soldier experience, class specialization, ability choices, and advanced training.

Gaining Experience and Promotions

Soldiers earn experience points (XP) by participating in missions and successfully completing objectives. The primary source of XP is killing alien units, but mission success, hacking objectives, and even carrying unconscious allies to extraction can contribute. Once a soldier accumulates enough XP, they will be eligible for a promotion.

  • Rookie to Squaddie: The first promotion is the most critical. Upon reaching Squaddie rank, a rookie is randomly assigned one of the four core classes: Sharpshooter, Ranger, Grenadier, or Specialist. This initial class assignment is permanent, so consider your squad composition carefully when deploying rookies.
  • Subsequent Ranks: After Squaddie, soldiers progress through Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and finally, Colonel. Each promotion grants them a new ability choice within their class skill tree.
  • Promotion Screen: After a mission, navigate to the Avenger's Barracks. Any soldier eligible for promotion will have a glowing icon next to their name. Click on them to access the promotion screen, where you can choose their new ability.

Class Specialization and Ability Choices

Each of the four core classes offers two distinct specialization paths, allowing for diverse tactical roles. Carefully consider the strengths and weaknesses of each path and how they complement your overall squad strategy.

Sharpshooter

Specializes in long-range combat and precision strikes.

  • Sniper Path: Focuses on powerful single-target damage from a distance.
    • Key Abilities:
      • Squadsight: Allows the Sharpshooter to target enemies visible to any squad member, regardless of their own line of sight. Essential for maximizing their range.
      • Deadeye: Grants a bonus to critical hit chance and damage, but with a penalty to aim. Use against high-health targets.
      • Serial: If you kill an enemy with your first shot, you get another action. Can clear multiple weak enemies in one turn.
  • Gunslinger Path: Emphasizes pistol combat, offering mobility and multi-target capabilities.
    • Key Abilities:
      • Lightning Hands: Fire your pistol as a free action. Excellent for finishing off wounded enemies or applying status effects.
      • Faceoff: Fire your pistol at every enemy in a cone. Great for clearing groups of low-health enemies.
      • Fan Fire: Fire your pistol three times at a single target. Devastating against high-priority threats.

Ranger

Excels in close-quarters combat, stealth, and scouting.

  • Scout Path: Focuses on stealth and reconnaissance.
    • Key Abilities:
      • Phantom: Start missions in concealment even if the rest of the squad is revealed. Invaluable for scouting ahead.
      • Run and Gun: Allows you to take a shot or use an ability after a dash move. Perfect for flanking and aggressive plays.
      • Rapid Fire: Fire twice at a single target with a slight aim penalty. High risk, high reward.
  • Assault Path: Specializes in aggressive melee and shotgun attacks.
    • Key Abilities:
      • Bladestorm: React to enemies moving within melee range with a free sword attack. Excellent for area denial.
      • Untouchable: If you kill an enemy on your turn, the next attack against you will miss. Crucial for aggressive Rangers.
      • Reaper: Perform a melee attack that costs no actions if it kills the target. Can chain multiple kills.

Grenadier

Master of explosives and heavy weaponry, ideal for area-of-effect damage and environmental destruction.

  • Demolitions Path: Maximizes explosive damage and utility.
    • Key Abilities:
      • Blast Padding: Grants bonus armor and explosive damage resistance. Makes them more durable in the thick of combat.
      • Volatile Mix: Increases the radius and damage of grenades. Essential for clearing groups of enemies and destroying cover.
      • Salvo: Using a grenade or heavy weapon does not end your turn. Allows for a follow-up shot or move.
  • Heavy Gunner Path: Focuses on sustained suppression and armor shredding with their cannon.
    • Key Abilities:
      • Shredder: Your cannon attacks shred 1 point of armor from the target. Crucial against armored enemies.
      • Suppression: Pin down an enemy, reducing their aim and forcing them to move or take a reaction shot.
      • Rupture: Your cannon attacks deal bonus damage and mark the target, causing them to take extra damage from all subsequent attacks.

Specialist

Provides crucial support, healing, and hacking capabilities.

  • Medic Path: Focuses on keeping the squad alive.
    • Key Abilities:
      • Medical Protocol: Use a Gremlin to heal or stabilize an ally from a distance.
      • Field Medic: Grants two additional charges of Medical Protocol. More healing means more survivability.
      • Restoration: Use a Gremlin to heal all allies in an area. A powerful emergency heal.
  • Hacker Path: Specializes in disabling enemy technology and hacking objectives.
    • Key Abilities:
      • Combat Protocol: Use a Gremlin to deal guaranteed damage to mechanical units and hack objectives from a distance.
      • Capacitor Discharge: Use a Gremlin to deal area-of-effect damage to mechanical units.
      • Haywire Protocol: Attempt to hack an enemy mechanical unit, potentially disabling or taking control of it.

Advanced Training and the Advanced Warfare Center (AWC)

Once you construct the Advanced Warfare Center on the Avenger, your soldier progression gains an additional layer. The AWC offers two key benefits:

  1. Bonus Abilities: Each soldier, upon reaching a certain rank (typically Corporal or Sergeant), will randomly gain a bonus ability from another class's skill tree. These can be incredibly powerful, creating unique and versatile soldiers. For example, a Sharpshooter with "Run and Gun" can become a mobile sniper, or a Grenadier with "Untouchable" can safely push forward.
  2. Retraining: The AWC allows you to retrain a soldier's chosen abilities. This is particularly useful if you made a suboptimal choice early on, or if a bonus ability changes your desired build path. Retraining takes several days, during which the soldier is unavailable for missions.

Prioritize building the AWC early to maximize the potential of your squad. Regularly check your soldiers for new bonus abilities and consider retraining if a powerful synergy emerges.

Fatigue and Wounds

Soldiers who sustain wounds in combat will be unavailable for a period while they recover in the Avenger's Medical Bay. The severity of the wound determines the recovery time. Additionally, even unwounded soldiers can suffer from "fatigue" if deployed on too many consecutive missions. While fatigue doesn't prevent deployment, it can lead to negative combat effects or increased wound chances. Rotate your squad to ensure your key soldiers are always rested and ready for action.
