Failure Conditions

In XCOM 2, victory is never guaranteed. Understanding the various ways your campaign can end in failure is crucial for effective strategy and long-term survival. This section details the primary failure conditions and provides actionable steps to mitigate these risks.

Avatar Project Completion

The most prominent and overarching failure condition is the completion of the Avatar Project. ADVENT's insidious plan to accelerate humanity's demise is represented by a progress bar at the top of your Geoscape screen. Once this bar fills completely, you have a grace period of approximately 20-30 days (depending on difficulty and specific events) before the game ends in a catastrophic loss.

  • Mitigation Strategy:
    • Destroy Avatar Facilities: The most direct way to reduce Avatar Project progress is to assault and destroy ADVENT's Avatar Facilities. These appear as red skull icons on the Geoscape. Prioritize these missions, especially when the Avatar Project bar is nearing completion. Each successful destruction removes several blocks from the progress bar.
    • Story Missions: Certain critical path story missions, such as those involving the Blacksite Vial or the Forge, will significantly reduce Avatar Project progress upon completion. Do not neglect these objectives.
    • Covert Operations: Once the Resistance Ring is built, you can sometimes find Covert Operations that offer "Reduce Avatar Project Progress" as a reward. These are invaluable, especially in the mid-to-late game.
    • Skulljack ADVENT Officers: Early in the game, performing a Skulljack on an ADVENT Officer for the first time will reveal an Avatar Facility location and temporarily halt Avatar Project progress.
  • Early Warning Signs: Pay close attention to the Geoscape. When the Avatar Project bar reaches critical levels, the game will often warn you with a flashing red indicator and audio cues. Do not ignore these warnings.

Squad Wipe

While not an immediate game over, a complete squad wipe on a mission can be a devastating blow that often leads to a cascade of failures, especially on higher difficulties or Ironman mode. If all soldiers are killed or rendered unconscious and cannot be extracted, the mission is a failure, and all deployed soldiers are lost permanently.

  • Mitigation Strategy:
    • Tactical Retreat: Know when to cut your losses. If a mission objective is no longer feasible and your squad is severely depleted, consider evacuating. A failed mission is better than a lost squad.
    • Overwatch Creep: Advance cautiously, using Overwatch to cover your flanks and anticipate enemy patrols. Avoid activating multiple pods simultaneously.
    • Full Cover is Life: Always position your soldiers in full cover. Half cover should only be used as a last resort or for aggressive plays with high-HP soldiers.
    • Medkits and Restoration: Equip your Specialists with Medikits and prioritize their "Medical Protocol" and "Restoration" abilities to keep soldiers alive and in the fight.
    • Battle Scanners and Scanning Protocol: Use Battle Scanners or the Specialist's "Scanning Protocol" to scout ahead and avoid ambushes.
    • Grenades and Explosives: Don't be afraid to use explosives to destroy cover and soften up enemy groups, especially early on. A dead enemy can't shoot back.
  • Consequences: A squad wipe can lead to a severe reduction in available soldiers, loss of valuable equipment, and a significant hit to your campaign's momentum, potentially making subsequent missions impossible and leading to the Avatar Project's completion.

Financial Collapse

XCOM requires a steady flow of supplies to build facilities, research new technologies, and recruit soldiers. Running out of supplies can cripple your operations and lead to a slow, inevitable defeat.

  • Mitigation Strategy:
    • Contacting Regions: Expand your reach by contacting new regions on the Geoscape. Each contacted region provides a monthly supply income. Prioritize regions that offer higher supply bonuses or are close to other strategic resources.
    • Supply Raids: Undertake "Supply Raid" missions whenever they appear. These missions offer a direct injection of supplies and are often crucial for maintaining financial stability.
    • Resistance Comms: Build additional Resistance Comms facilities to increase your contact capacity and thus your potential supply income.
    • Black Market: Sell excess alien alloys, Elerium Crystals, and other resources on the Black Market if you are desperate for supplies, but be mindful of future research and construction needs.
    • Covert Operations: Some Covert Operations, accessible via the Resistance Ring, offer supply rewards.
  • Consequences: Insufficient supplies mean you cannot build essential facilities like the Advanced Warfare Center or Psi Lab, research critical tech like Plasma Weapons, or recruit replacement soldiers, leaving you ill-equipped to face ADVENT's escalating threat.

Loss of the Avenger

The Avenger is your mobile base of operations. If it is destroyed, your campaign ends immediately. This can happen during specific story missions or if you fail to defend it during an "Avenger Defense" mission.

  • Mitigation Strategy:
    • Avenger Defense Missions: When an Avenger Defense mission appears, drop everything and prioritize it. These missions are often challenging but absolutely critical. Ensure your best squad is ready.
    • Facility Power: Ensure your Avenger has sufficient power. Overloading your power grid can lead to critical systems failing, making the Avenger more vulnerable. Build Power Relays and an Elerium Reactor as needed.
    • Engineering Staff: Assign engineers to facilities to improve their efficiency and potentially repair damage faster.
  • Early Warning Signs: The game will explicitly warn you when an Avenger Defense mission is imminent. Do not ignore these alerts.
