Supply Drop Management
Effective management of your monthly Supply Drops is paramount to XCOM's success. These drops are your primary source of income and crucial resources, directly impacting your ability to research, build, and equip your soldiers. Neglecting this aspect can quickly lead to a crippling shortage of funds and materials, stalling your progress against ADVENT.
Understanding Supply Drop Mechanics
Supply Drops occur approximately every 28 days, marked by a countdown timer on the Geoscape. The amount of Supplies received is influenced by several factors:
- Regions Contacted: Each region you have established contact with contributes a base amount of Supplies. Prioritize expanding your reach to maximize this.
- Resistance Comms: Building Resistance Comms facilities increases the number of regions you can contact, directly boosting your Supply income.
- Region Bonuses: Some regions offer specific bonuses that can increase Supply income, such as "Increased Supply Drop" or "Bonus Supplies." Always check these before making contact.
- Dark Events: Be wary of Dark Events like "Supply Raid" or "Increased Supply Cost," which can severely reduce your incoming Supplies or increase the cost of items in the Black Market.
- Black Market Sales: While not part of the drop itself, selling unwanted Alien Alloys, Elerium Crystals, or even excess weapon upgrades on the Black Market can supplement your income between drops.
Optimizing Your Supply Drop Income
To ensure you're getting the most out of every Supply Drop, follow these actionable steps:
1. Prioritize Resistance Comms
Early in the game, after establishing your Guerrilla Tactics School and Advanced Warfare Center, your next priority should often be a Resistance Comms facility. This allows you to contact more regions, directly increasing your base Supply income. A second Resistance Comms might be necessary mid-game, especially if you're struggling with finances.
- First Resistance Comms: Aim to build this in the Avenger's central column, ideally on the second or third floor, to benefit from adjacent power coils if available.
- Staffing: Assign an Engineer to your Resistance Comms to reduce its power consumption and speed up contact establishment.
2. Strategic Region Contact
Don't just contact regions randomly. Evaluate the Geoscape carefully:
- High-Value Regions: Prioritize regions that offer "Increased Supply Drop" bonuses or other beneficial perks. These are often highlighted on the Geoscape.
- Adjacent Regions: Contacting adjacent regions can sometimes be cheaper or faster, allowing for quicker expansion.
- Dark Event Mitigation: If a "Supply Raid" Dark Event is active, consider contacting a new region just before the Supply Drop to slightly offset the penalty.
3. Black Market Sales - A Necessary Evil
While selling resources might feel counter-intuitive, it's a vital tool for immediate cash flow. However, be judicious:
- Excess Alien Alloys/Elerium Crystals: If you have a significant surplus (e.g., 100+ Alien Alloys or 50+ Elerium Crystals) and are desperate for cash, selling a portion can be a lifesaver. Always retain enough for upcoming research and facility upgrades.
- Unused Weapon Upgrades: Early game, you might find multiple stocks or scopes. If you only have a few soldiers equipped, selling the duplicates can net you a quick 20-30 Supplies per item.
- Alien Corpses/Components: Be extremely careful selling these. Most are vital for research projects (e.g., Sectoid Corpse for Psi Lab, Advent Trooper Corpse for Plated Armor). Only sell if you have a massive surplus and absolutely no current or foreseeable research needs for them.
4. Managing Power and Engineers
Your ability to build and staff facilities directly impacts your Supply income. Ensure you have enough power and engineers:
- Power Relays: Build these strategically, especially over power coils, to generate ample power for your facilities.
- Engineers: Assign Engineers to facilities like Resistance Comms, Workshops, and Power Relays to optimize their output and reduce maintenance costs. More engineers mean more efficient operations, indirectly saving you Supplies.
5. Avenger Upgrades
While not directly tied to the Supply Drop itself, certain Avenger upgrades can indirectly boost your economy:
- Workshop: Building a Workshop can provide additional Engineers (via Gremlins) for staffing other facilities, improving efficiency and potentially freeing up Engineers for other tasks.
- Proving Ground Projects: Some Proving Ground projects, while costly, can yield powerful items that reduce casualties or speed up missions, saving you on soldier recovery time and replacement costs.
By diligently applying these strategies, you can transform your monthly Supply Drops from a mere income source into a powerful economic engine, fueling your fight against ADVENT and ensuring XCOM's ultimate victory.
