Victory Conditions
Achieving victory in XCOM 2 is not a simple matter of surviving a set number of missions. Instead, it's a multi-stage campaign against ADVENT, culminating in a direct assault on their core operations. Understanding these victory conditions and the steps to achieve them is crucial for effective strategic planning and resource allocation.
The Avatar Project Countdown
The primary antagonist in your race against time is the ADVENT's "Avatar Project." This project is represented by a progress bar at the top of your Geoscape interface. Each segment filled signifies ADVENT's advancement towards completing their ultimate weapon or plan, which would result in an immediate game over for XCOM. Your goal is to keep this progress in check while simultaneously advancing your own research and operations.
- Monitoring Progress: Regularly check the Avatar Project bar. When it fills completely, a countdown timer will begin. You have a limited number of days (typically 20-30, depending on difficulty) to reduce the project's progress.
- Reducing Progress: The most effective way to reduce Avatar Project progress is by completing specific story-critical missions. These often involve assaulting ADVENT facilities or capturing/interrogating specific ADVENT personnel.
- Facility Raids: These missions are often marked on the Geoscape with a distinct icon. Successfully completing a facility raid will remove a significant chunk of Avatar Project progress. Prioritize these missions, especially when the countdown is active.
- Blacksite Vial: Early in the campaign, you'll encounter a Blacksite mission. Extracting the Blacksite Vial and bringing it back to the Avenger is a critical step, as it unlocks crucial research paths that directly counter the Avatar Project.
The Main Storyline Objectives
Your ultimate victory is tied to completing a series of interconnected research projects and covert operations that unravel the true nature of ADVENT and the Elders. These objectives will guide your strategic layer progression.
1. Uncovering the Blacksite
This is typically one of your first major objectives. You'll need to establish contact with a region containing an ADVENT Blacksite. Researching the
2. The ADVENT Stasis Suit and Psionics
Following the Blacksite, you'll be tasked with obtaining an ADVENT Stasis Suit. This often involves a specific mission where you must recover the suit from an ADVENT facility or a crashed UFO. Researching the Stasis Suit will eventually lead to the discovery and development of Psionic abilities for your soldiers, a critical component of your late-game strategy.
3. The ADVENT Codex and Data Recovery
The appearance of the Codex enemy type signals a new phase. You'll need to capture a Codex (either by stunning it with a
- Codex Data Recovery Mission: A crucial mission will emerge where you must hack into an ADVENT data network, often protected by multiple Codices. Successfully extracting this data is vital for progressing the main story.
4. The ADVENT Network Tower
After analyzing the Codex data, you'll pinpoint the location of a major ADVENT Network Tower. This mission is a significant undertaking, often involving multiple pods of advanced ADVENT units. Successfully infiltrating and disabling this tower will provide XCOM with a direct link into the ADVENT global network.
5. The Alien Rulers (DLC - if applicable)
If you have the "Alien Hunters" DLC, you'll encounter the Alien Rulers. While not directly tied to the core victory condition, defeating them and researching their unique corpses (e.g.,
6. The Gatekeeper and the Psi Gate
The appearance of the Gatekeeper enemy marks another turning point. You'll need to capture a Gatekeeper (again, often through stunning or specific mission objectives) and research the
7. The Forge and the Commander's Avatar
With the Psi Gate understood, your next objective is to find and assault the ADVENT Forge. This facility is where the Elders are creating their ultimate weapon – the Commander's Avatar. This mission is a high-stakes engagement. Successfully extracting the
- Avatar Project Acceleration: Be aware that assaulting the Forge will often cause a significant spike in Avatar Project progress, so ensure you have a plan to counter it afterwards.
8. The Final Assault: The Alien Fortress
The Commander's Avatar, once brought back to the Avenger and studied, will provide the final piece of the puzzle: the location of the Alien Fortress, the Elders' primary base of operations. This is the final mission of the game.
- Preparation is Key: Before launching the final assault, ensure your squad is fully equipped with the best armor (e.g.,
Warden Armor ,Wraith Suit ), weapons (e.g.,Plasma Rifle ,Beam Cannon ), and utility items (e.g.,Mimic Beacons ,Battle Scanners ). Maxed-out Psionic soldiers and MECs (if applicable) are highly recommended. - Multi-Stage Mission: The Alien Fortress mission is typically a multi-stage affair, often requiring you to navigate complex terrain, disable multiple objectives, and face waves of the toughest ADVENT and alien units.
- The Elders: The final confrontation will involve facing the Elders themselves, often manifesting as powerful Avatar units. Defeating these Avatars and destroying the Alien Fortress constitutes your ultimate victory.
By systematically dismantling the Avatar Project and completing these key story objectives, you will lead XCOM to victory and liberate Earth from ADVENT control.
