Post-Game & Replayability
Congratulations, Commander! You've successfully dismantled ADVENT's tyranny and liberated Earth. But the fight for freedom in XCOM 2 is far from over. This section details what awaits you after the final mission and how to squeeze every last drop of strategic enjoyment from the game.
Continuing the Fight: Post-Campaign Objectives
While the main narrative concludes, XCOM 2 offers several ways to extend your campaign and further solidify humanity's victory. These aren't explicitly presented as "post-game missions" but rather as ongoing strategic goals.
Eliminating Remaining ADVENT Strongholds
- Objective: Even after destroying the Avatar Project, scattered ADVENT forces and facilities remain. Your Avenger will continue to detect Blacksites, Alien Facilities, and Supply Raids.
- Strategy: Prioritize dismantling these remaining threats. Each facility destroyed reduces ADVENT's global presence and provides valuable resources.
- Rewards:
- Resources: Intel, Supplies, Elerium Cores, and Alloys are always in demand for further research and equipment upgrades.
- Experience: Continue to level up your soldiers, especially those who might have missed out on earlier missions.
- Satisfaction: A truly clean sweep of the alien threat.
Completing Research & Proving Ground Projects
- Objective: You likely finished the game with several research projects or Proving Ground initiatives still pending.
- Strategy:
- Research: Focus on completing any remaining weapon tiers (e.g., Plasma Weapons if you only reached Beam), armor upgrades (e.g., Warden Armor), and utility items (e.g., advanced Grenades, Mimic Beacons).
- Proving Ground: Prioritize experimental projects like the Experimental Grenade, Experimental Ammo, and Experimental Heavy Weapons to unlock powerful new gear. Don't forget the Skulljack and Skullmine if you haven't fully utilized them for Intel.
- Benefits: Fully equipped soldiers are even more devastating, and new gear can open up fresh tactical approaches for future playthroughs.
Maximizing Soldier Ranks and Abilities
- Objective: Get all your favorite soldiers to Colonel rank and ensure they have optimal ability choices.
- Strategy:
- Mission Deployment: Rotate your roster, giving lower-ranked soldiers opportunities to gain experience on easier missions.
- Advanced Warfare Center: use the AWC to retrain soldiers for better ability synergies or to fix suboptimal choices made earlier in the campaign. Consider building a second AWC if you have the resources to speed up training.
- Psi Operatives: If you haven't already, train a full squad of Psi Operatives. Their abilities, like Null Lance and Domination, are incredibly powerful and fun to master.
Replayability: Starting Anew
XCOM 2 is designed for multiple playthroughs, offering a wealth of customization and challenge options to keep the experience fresh.
Increasing Difficulty
The most straightforward way to replay XCOM 2 is to ramp up the challenge:
- Commander Difficulty: A significant step up from Veteran, requiring more careful planning and tactical execution.
- Legend Difficulty: The ultimate test. Enemies have more health, deal more damage, and the Avatar Project timer is much shorter. Resources are scarcer, and research/build times are longer. This difficulty truly forces you to optimize every decision.
- Ironman Mode: Available on all difficulties, Ironman prevents you from reloading previous saves. Every decision is permanent, making for an incredibly tense and rewarding experience. Highly recommended for seasoned Commanders.
Exploring Different Strategies
Each playthrough offers an opportunity to experiment with different approaches:
- Squad Composition:
- Specialist-Heavy: Focus on hacking and support with multiple Specialists.
- Grenadier Spam: Maximize explosive damage with several Grenadiers equipped with Shredder and Volatile Mix.
- Psi-Domination: Build a core of Psi Operatives early and leverage their mind-bending powers.
- Melee Rush: use Rangers with Bladestorm and Templars (if playing with War of the Chosen) for aggressive close-quarters combat.
- Research Paths: Try prioritizing different research branches. For instance, rush Plated Armor and Mag Weapons, or focus on Advanced Grenades and Experimental Ammo early on.
- Avenger Facility Layout: Experiment with different build orders for your Avenger facilities. Do you rush a Proving Ground or a Guerilla Tactics School? Do you build multiple Power Relays or rely on Excavation for power?
War of the Chosen Expansion
If you own the War of the Chosen expansion, it fundamentally changes the replay experience:
- New Factions: The Reapers, Skirmishers, and Templars introduce unique hero units with distinct playstyles and abilities. Integrating them into your squad opens up entirely new tactical possibilities.
- The Chosen: Three persistent, powerful alien adversaries (the Assassin, Hunter, and Warlock) will harass you throughout the campaign, developing new strengths and weaknesses. Defeating them requires specific strategies and adds a dynamic layer of challenge.
- Faction Missions: New mission types and covert operations provide additional strategic depth and rewards.
- Fatigue System: Soldiers can become fatigued, preventing them from going on consecutive missions and forcing you to rotate your roster more frequently.
- Alien Rulers (DLC Integration): If you enable the Alien Rulers DLC with War of the Chosen, the Rulers will appear as powerful, persistent threats, further increasing the challenge.
Modding Community
The XCOM 2 PC community boasts a vibrant modding scene. From quality-of-life improvements to entirely new classes, enemies, and campaigns, mods can dramatically alter your gameplay experience. Popular mod categories include:
- UI Enhancements: Mods that improve the user interface, such as Perfect Information or Gotcha Again.
- New Classes: Add entirely new soldier classes with unique skill trees and equipment.
- Enemy Overhauls: Introduce new alien types or modify existing ones to keep you on your toes.
- Long War 2: A massive overhaul mod that completely rebalances the game, offering a much longer, more complex, and challenging campaign. This is often considered a "new game" in itself.
