Research & Development

Welcome, Commander, to the beating heart of XCOM's resurgence: Research & Development. This crucial department, overseen by Dr. Richard Tygan, is where alien technology is reverse-engineered, new weapons are forged, and the path to victory against ADVENT is paved. Mastering your research priorities is paramount to your success, as it directly impacts your squad's capabilities, your Avenger's functionality, and your ability to counter the ever-evolving alien threat.

Understanding the Research Interface

Access the Research & Development screen from the Avenger's Geoscape or by clicking on the Research Lab facility. Here, you'll see a list of available research projects, their estimated completion time, and the resources required. Dr. Tygan will often offer commentary on new discoveries or suggest immediate priorities based on recent mission intel.

  • Research Queue: You can queue up multiple research projects, but only one will be actively researched at a time. Plan ahead to minimize downtime.
  • Scientists: Each scientist assigned to the Research Lab reduces research time. More scientists mean faster breakthroughs. Prioritize recruiting scientists from Resistance Contacts or as mission rewards.
  • Breakthroughs: Some research projects, particularly early game ones, will unlock "Breakthrough" projects. These are often crucial advancements that don't require further alien artifacts but still consume research time.

Early Game Research Priorities (Months 1-3)

Your initial research choices will define your early game survival. Focus on projects that provide immediate combat advantages and unlock essential facilities.

Tier 1: Essential Foundations

  • Modular Weapons: This should be your absolute first research project. It unlocks weapon upgrade slots, allowing you to attach scopes, extended magazines, and other crucial attachments found on missions. This is a massive power spike for your early squad.
  • Alien Biotech: Unlocks the Advanced Warfare Center, a vital facility for healing wounded soldiers faster and granting them bonus abilities. It also opens up the path to more advanced armor.
  • Alien Alloys: Essential for upgrading your armor. This will lead to the development of Predator Armor, a significant defensive boost for your soldiers.
  • Hybrid Materials: A quick research project that unlocks the Proving Ground, allowing you to build experimental weapons and armor.

Tier 2: Expanding Your Arsenal

Once you have Modular Weapons and Alien Biotech underway, consider these projects:

  • Magnetic Weapons: This is a game-changer. Magnetic Rifles, Cannons, and Pistols offer a substantial damage increase over conventional firearms, making combat significantly easier. Prioritize this as soon as you have the resources (Alien Alloys, Elerium Crystals).
  • Resistance Comms: Crucial for expanding your Resistance Contact network, allowing you to reach more regions and increase your income. This should be researched concurrently with your weapon upgrades.
  • Predator Armor: The first major armor upgrade, offering increased health and utility slots. Research this after Alien Alloys.

Mid Game Research (Months 4-6)

As ADVENT escalates, so too must your technology. Focus on countering new alien threats and further specializing your squad.

Countering New Threats

  • ADVENT Mec Breakdown: Allows you to salvage valuable Mec Autopsies from destroyed ADVENT MECs, which are used in various Proving Ground projects.
  • Sectoid Autopsy: Unlocks the Mindshield, a critical defensive item against Sectoid psi attacks.
  • Muton Autopsy: Leads to the development of Plasma Grenades and the Alien Grenade Launcher, offering powerful area-of-effect damage.

Advanced Weaponry & Armor

  • Plasma Weapons: The ultimate weapon tier. Plasma Rifles, Storm Guns, and Beam Cannons provide unparalleled damage output. This will require significant Elerium Crystals and Alien Alloys.
  • Powered Armor: Unlocks Warden Armor, the next tier of heavy armor, and eventually the mighty EXO and WAR Suits. These suits offer incredible defensive capabilities and unique heavy weapon slots.

Late Game Research (Months 7+)

By the late game, you should be focusing on the final push against ADVENT and preparing for the Avatar Project's completion.

  • Psi Gate: Unlocks the Psi Lab facility, allowing you to train powerful Psi Operatives. This is a long-term investment but yields incredibly potent soldiers.
  • Skulljack: A story-critical item that allows you to hack ADVENT officers and gain valuable intel, often revealing Avatar Project facilities. This is a mandatory research project to advance the main storyline.
  • Avatar Project Research: As you progress, Dr. Tygan will offer research projects directly related to the Avatar Project. These are essential for understanding and ultimately dismantling ADVENT's ultimate weapon.
  • Advanced Power Coils: Unlocks the Plasma Lance, a powerful heavy weapon for your EXO/WAR Suits.

Strategic Considerations

  • Alien Autopsies: Always prioritize autopsies of new alien types you encounter. They often unlock critical items, weapon upgrades, or facility projects. For example, a Faceless Autopsy unlocks the Mimic Beacon, an invaluable tactical item.
  • Proving Ground Synergy: Many research projects unlock items or projects in the Proving Ground. Keep an eye on these synergies. For instance, researching ADVENT Mec Breakdown allows you to build the SPARK unit in the Proving Ground.
  • Resource Management: Research often requires Alien Alloys, Elerium Crystals, and Intel. Ensure you're consistently collecting these resources from mission rewards, supply raids, and selling unwanted items on the Black Market.
  • Scientist Allocation: While you can only actively research one project, having more scientists significantly speeds up the process. Always prioritize recruiting scientists.
  • Dark Events: Some Dark Events can directly impact your research speed or unlock new, challenging research projects. Be prepared to adapt your priorities.

By carefully managing your research and development, you will equip XCOM with the tools necessary to overcome any alien threat and reclaim Earth from ADVENT.
