Ambush Tactics
Ambushing ADVENT patrols is a cornerstone of successful XCOM 2 operations, allowing you to dictate the terms of engagement and often eliminate entire pods before they can react. Mastering the art of the ambush transforms challenging encounters into manageable victories. This section will detail effective strategies for setting up and executing devastating ambushes.
Initial Setup and Reconnaissance
Before committing to an ambush, careful reconnaissance is paramount. Your goal is to identify a suitable choke point or open area where the enemy patrol will be funneled, and where your squad can establish superior firing lines.
- Maintain Concealment: Always advance cautiously, using your squad's initial concealment to scout ahead. A Ranger with the Phantom perk (or equipped with a Mimic Beacon for later game scouting) is invaluable for safely identifying enemy positions without breaking concealment for the rest of the squad.
- Identify Patrol Routes: Observe enemy movement patterns. Most pods follow predictable routes. Look for areas where they will pass through narrow corridors, around corners, or into open ground where they lack cover.
- Choose Your Ground: Select an ambush site that offers high ground, plenty of full cover for your soldiers, and clear lines of sight to the enemy's likely approach. Avoid areas with environmental hazards that could backfire (e.g., explosive barrels near your own position).
Positioning Your Squad for Maximum Impact
Once you've identified your ambush location, it's time to position your soldiers. The key is to maximize damage output on the first turn of combat.
- Overwatch Trap: The most common and effective ambush tactic is the "Overwatch Trap."
- Flanking Positions: If possible, position some soldiers (especially Sharpshooters or Specialists) on high ground or at angles that will provide flanking shots on the enemy as they enter the ambush zone.
- Concealed Overwatch: Have the majority of your squad enter Overwatch while still concealed. This allows them to fire at the first enemy unit that breaks concealment, often triggering a chain reaction of Overwatch shots.
- Grenadiers First: Position your Grenadier(s) to throw explosives immediately after the Overwatch chain, or even as the trigger for the ambush if a cluster of enemies is present.
- Specialist's Role: A Specialist with Combat Protocol can be used to guarantee damage on a high-HP target or to finish off a weakened enemy after the initial Overwatch volley. Their Haywire Protocol can also be invaluable against robotic units like Sectopods or MECs if they are part of the patrol.
- Sharpshooter's Perch: Your Sharpshooter should always seek the highest possible ground with the clearest line of sight. Their Deadeye or Serial abilities can be devastating in an ambush, allowing them to pick off multiple targets or guarantee a hit on a crucial enemy.
- Ranger's Close Quarters: A Ranger with Run and Gun or Bladestorm can be positioned aggressively, ready to dash in for a close-range shotgun blast or a powerful melee attack on a high-priority target that survives the initial volley.
Executing the Ambush
The moment of truth. Timing and target prioritization are crucial for a clean ambush.
- Triggering the Ambush: The ambush is typically triggered when an enemy unit moves into the line of sight of one of your Overwatching soldiers. However, you can also manually trigger it with a Grenade or a targeted shot if you have a clear shot on a high-value target or a cluster of enemies.
- Target Prioritization:
- High-Threat Units: Always prioritize units that pose the most immediate threat, such as Sectoids (for their mind control), Vipers (for their bind and poison), or Mutons (for their high damage and grenades).
- Psionics/Medics: If present, Advent Priests or Sectoids should be taken out quickly to prevent their support abilities from turning the tide.
- Clustered Enemies: If multiple enemies are tightly packed, a well-placed Grenade from a Grenadier can soften them up or even eliminate several at once, making subsequent shots easier.
- Follow-Up Actions: After the initial Overwatch volley and any Grenade attacks, use your remaining actions to finish off any surviving enemies. Focus fire to eliminate one enemy at a time rather than spreading damage across multiple targets. Use abilities like Rapid Fire (Ranger) or Faceoff (Sharpshooter) to clear out remaining threats.
Advanced Ambush Considerations
- Mimic Beacons: In the mid-to-late game, the Mimic Beacon is an incredibly powerful tool for ambushes. If an ambush doesn't go perfectly, or if a powerful enemy (like an Andromedon or Gatekeeper) survives, throwing a Mimic Beacon can draw all enemy fire, buying your squad a crucial turn to reposition, reload, or finish off threats.
- Environmental Exploitation: Look for explosive barrels, fuel tanks, or destructible cover. A well-placed shot or grenade can detonate these, causing additional damage or removing enemy cover, making them easier targets.
- Mind Control/Stasis: If you have a Psi Operative, Stasis can temporarily remove a high-threat enemy from the fight, allowing you to focus on others. Domination or Insanity can turn an enemy against its allies, creating chaos within their ranks during the ambush.
By meticulously planning your approach, positioning your squad intelligently, and executing with precision, you can consistently turn the tables on ADVENT and emerge victorious from even the most daunting encounters.
