The Basics

Welcome to the world of Yakuza 3! Whether you're a seasoned veteran of Kamurocho or a newcomer to the Dragon of Dojima's adventures, this section will equip you with the fundamental knowledge to navigate the bustling streets, master the brutal combat, and make the most of your time in Okinawa and Tokyo. Pay close attention, as understanding these core mechanics is crucial for success.

Combat Fundamentals

Combat in Yakuza 3 is a dynamic blend of brawling and strategic use of the environment. Kiryu's fighting style, the Dragon of Dojima, is versatile, offering both quick strikes and powerful finishers.

  • Light Attacks (Square): Your primary method for initiating combos and dealing quick damage. String these together to build up your Heat Gauge.
  • Heavy Attacks (Triangle): Slower but more powerful, these attacks are excellent for breaking enemy guards or finishing combos.
  • Grabbing (Circle): Get close to an enemy and press Circle to grab them. From a grab, you can perform various actions:
    • Throw (Circle again): Toss your opponent, often into other enemies or environmental hazards.
    • Punch/Kick (Square/Triangle): Deliver a few quick hits while holding them.
    • Heat Action (Triangle when Heat is high): If your Heat Gauge is sufficiently high, a powerful, cinematic Heat Action will be available.
  • Dodging (X): Essential for avoiding incoming attacks. Time your dodges carefully to create openings for your own assaults.
  • Blocking (L1): Hold L1 to guard against most frontal attacks. Be aware that some heavy attacks can break your guard.
  • Heat Actions: These are your ultimate moves, triggered when your Heat Gauge (the blue bar below your health) is sufficiently filled and specific conditions are met (e.g., near a wall, holding a weapon, or grabbing an enemy). Look for the "HEAT" prompt on screen. They deal massive damage and are often accompanied by stylish animations. Experiment with different situations to discover all available Heat Actions!
  • Weapons: The streets are your arsenal! Pick up objects like bicycles, traffic cones, and even signs to use as makeshift weapons. Weapons have limited durability but can turn the tide of a tough fight. You can also purchase or find more durable weapons.

Exploration and Navigation

Yakuza 3 features two main explorable areas: Kamurocho, Tokyo, and Ryukyu, Okinawa. Both are dense with activities, shops, and substories.

  • Minimap: Always keep an eye on your minimap (top right of the screen). It displays your current location, nearby points of interest, and the direction of your next objective (marked with a yellow arrow).
  • Saving Your Game: You can save your progress at any phone booth marked on your minimap. It's wise to save frequently, especially before challenging fights or major story sequences.
  • Healing: Your health bar (red bar) depletes during combat. Replenish it by consuming food and drinks purchased from convenience stores (e.g., Poppo, M Store) or restaurants. Keep a stock of Staminan X or Toughness Z in your inventory for emergencies.
  • Money: Yen is king! You earn money from winning fights, completing substories, and engaging in various minigames. Use it to buy healing items, equipment, and enjoy the many leisure activities available.
  • Experience Points (XP): Defeating enemies and completing substories grants you XP. Accumulate enough XP to level up Kiryu's abilities.
