Money Making Strategies
While Kiryu isn't exactly hurting for cash running the Morning Glory Orphanage, having a healthy bankroll in Yakuza 3 allows you to purchase powerful weapons, healing items, and enjoy the various minigames and activities Kamurocho and Ryukyu have to offer. Here are some of the most effective ways to fill your pockets:
Early Game Income (Chapters 1-4)
- Street Brawls: The most consistent early-game income. Engage every group of thugs you see. Each fight typically rewards you with ¥1,000 - ¥3,000, plus any dropped items. Focus on Heat Actions for quicker finishes and more experience.
- Item Selling: Many common items dropped by enemies or found in the environment can be sold for a quick buck.
- Energy Drinks: These are frequently dropped and can fetch a decent price at pawn shops like Ebisu Pawn in Kamurocho or the Ryukyu Street Market.
- Luxury Items: Keep an eye out for items like "Luxury Watch" or "Pearl Necklace" from certain enemy types or hidden in lockers. These sell for significantly more.
- Locker Keys: Throughout Kamurocho and Ryukyu, you'll find glowing locker keys. Each key corresponds to a locker containing an item, often valuable. Check the lockers near the Millennium Tower in Kamurocho and the Ryukyu Street Market for easy access.
- Substories: Completing substories often rewards you with cash, sometimes substantial amounts, in addition to experience and unique items. Prioritize these as they become available.
Mid to Late Game Income (Chapter 5 onwards)
As you progress, more lucrative opportunities open up. These methods require a bit more investment or skill but offer much higher returns.
Gambling & Minigames
Gambling can be a high-risk, high-reward strategy. Always save before attempting these methods.
- Cho-han & Koi-koi: Found in the Gambling Hall in Ryukyu (accessible after a specific substory) or the secret casino in Kamurocho.
- Strategy: Start with smaller bets to get a feel for the game. For Cho-han, try to identify patterns in the dealer's rolls. For Koi-koi, focus on completing high-value Yaku.
- Item Exchange: You'll win "chips" or "tags" which can be exchanged for valuable items. Look for items like the "Platinum Plate" or "Diamond" which sell for ¥100,000 or more at pawn shops.
- Shogi: While not directly providing cash, winning Shogi matches can earn you "Shogi Points" which can be exchanged for rare items that sell for a good price. This requires understanding the game, but there are often guides online for specific Shogi puzzles.
- Mahjong: Similar to Shogi, Mahjong offers high-value item exchanges for points. This is a complex game, but mastering it can be very profitable.
Brawler's Road
Once unlocked, the Brawler's Road (found in the underground area of Kamurocho) offers a consistent way to earn money and experience through combat challenges.
- Repeated Challenges: Certain challenges can be repeated for cash rewards. Focus on challenges you can complete quickly and efficiently.
- Item Drops: Stronger enemies in Brawler's Road often drop higher-tier healing items or accessories that can be sold.
Weapon & Gear Selling
While you'll want to keep some powerful weapons for yourself, many weapons and pieces of gear obtained from substories, locker keys, or purchased from weapon shops can be sold for a profit if you find better alternatives.
- Crafting & Selling: If you invest in the weapon crafting system, you can sometimes craft items that sell for more than the cost of their components, though this often requires rare materials.
The "Lucky Box" Method (Late Game)
This method becomes viable once you have a substantial amount of money to invest. Head to the Don Quijote convenience store in Kamurocho or the Ryukyu Street Market. Purchase a large quantity of "Lucky Boxes" (usually ¥1,000 each).
- Contents: Lucky Boxes contain a random assortment of items, from cheap snacks to incredibly valuable "Platinum Plates" (¥100,000).
- Strategy: Buy 50-100 Lucky Boxes at a time. Open them all, then sell all the valuable items (Platinum Plates, Gold Plates, etc.) at a pawn shop. Discard or use the less valuable items. While there's an element of luck, on average, you should turn a profit. Save before attempting this to reload if your luck is particularly bad.
By combining these strategies, you'll ensure Kiryu always has enough yen to support the orphanage and enjoy everything Yakuza 3 has to offer.
