Character Progression & Upgrades
Mastering the streets of Kamurocho requires more than just a strong punch; it demands strategic character development. Yakuza 4 offers a robust progression system, allowing you to tailor each of the four protagonists to your preferred fighting style. This section will break down how to effectively upgrade your characters, acquire new abilities, and maximize their potential.
Experience Points (XP) and Soul Points (SP)
Every action in Yakuza 4, from defeating thugs in street fights to completing substories and mini-games, awards Experience Points (XP). Once you accumulate enough XP, your character will level up, granting you a set number of Soul Points (SP). SP is the currency used to purchase and upgrade abilities for each character. You can view your current XP, level, and available SP in the "Status" section of the main menu.
- Grinding for XP: The most consistent way to earn XP is through street encounters. Engage every group of thugs you see. For a more focused approach, consider repeatedly playing mini-games like the "Battle Dungeon" (available later in the game for certain characters) or challenging the "Coliseum" in Purgatory.
- Substory Rewards: Many substories offer significant XP bonuses upon completion. Prioritize these, especially early in the game, to quickly gain levels.
- Food and Drink: Consuming food and drinks from restaurants and convenience stores can provide temporary XP boosts or even direct SP. Keep an eye out for menu items that offer these benefits.
The Upgrade Menu: Abilities and Stats
Access the upgrade menu by navigating to "Abilities" from the main menu. Here, you'll find a detailed breakdown of each character's available upgrades, categorized for easy navigation.

Skill Books and Revelations
Throughout Kamurocho, you can discover "Skill Books" or experience "Revelations" that grant new Heat Actions or passive abilities. These are often hidden or tied to specific substories.
- Skill Books: These are physical items found in the environment or rewarded for completing certain tasks. For example, the "Book of the Dragon" can be found in a locker or as a reward for a specific substory, granting Kiryu a new Heat Action.
- Revelations: These are mini-events where a character observes something in the environment that inspires a new Heat Action. For instance, Akiyama might see a street performer and gain inspiration for a new aerial kick. Pay attention to exclamation marks on your mini-map and interact with anything that seems out of place.
By diligently earning SP, strategically investing in upgrades, and seeking out training and hidden abilities, you will transform each of Yakuza 4's protagonists into formidable forces, ready to take on any challenge Kamurocho throws their way.
