Item Management & Storage
Effective item management is crucial for surviving the mean streets of Kamurocho in Yakuza 4. While your inventory space is limited, the game provides several convenient ways to store and retrieve items, ensuring you're always prepared for whatever comes your way.
Your Personal Inventory
Each character in Yakuza 4 has a personal inventory accessible via the main menu. This is where you'll carry immediate-use items like healing drinks, stat-boosting foods, and equipped gear. Pay close attention to your inventory slots, especially before heading into a major boss fight or a long sequence of street brawls.
- Healing Items: Always keep a stock of healing items. Early game, you'll rely on cheap options like Toughness Light and Staminan Light. As you progress, upgrade to Toughness Z, Staminan Royale, and even the potent Tauriner Maximum. These can be purchased from convenience stores like Poppo and M Store, or found in lockers.
- Stat Boosts: Food items from restaurants like Kyushu No. 1 Star or Smile Burger offer temporary stat boosts or fill your Heat Gauge. Consider carrying a few for challenging encounters.
- Weapons & Gear: While you can equip one weapon and one piece of armor, you'll often pick up various weapons from enemies or find them in the environment. These will occupy inventory slots if you decide to keep them. Prioritize keeping unique or powerful weapons, and store common ones.
- Key Items: These are story-critical items and do not take up inventory space. Don't worry about managing them.
Item Boxes: Your Lifeline
Item Boxes are your primary method for storing excess items. These are shared across all four protagonists, meaning anything Akiyama stores can be retrieved by Saejima, Tanimura, or Kiryu. This is incredibly useful for transferring powerful weapons or valuable healing items between characters.
Finding Item Boxes
Item Boxes are strategically placed throughout Kamurocho. You'll typically find them in:
- Hideouts: Each character's primary hideout will have an Item Box.
- Akiyama: Sky Finance office (3rd Floor, Millennium Tower East).
- Saejima: His apartment (back alley near Theater Square).
- Tanimura: His apartment (Tenkaichi Street).
- Kiryu: New Serena (Theater Square Alley) and his orphanage in Okinawa (though you won't be accessing this much for item storage in Kamurocho).
- Convenience Stores: Most Poppo and M Store locations have an Item Box near the counter. This is incredibly convenient for quick drops or pickups while out exploring.
- Specific Locations: Certain other key locations, like the Batting Center, will also have an Item Box.
Using the Item Box
- Locate an Item Box icon on your map (it looks like a small, brown box).
- Approach the Item Box and interact with it.
- You'll be presented with two options: "Deposit" and "Withdraw."
- Deposit: Select items from your current character's inventory to move them into the shared storage. This frees up your personal inventory slots.
- Withdraw: Select items from the shared storage to move them into your current character's inventory.
Pro-Tip: Always deposit valuable or rare items you don't immediately need. This includes expensive alcohol, crafting materials, and unique weapons. You never know when you might need them for a side quest or a tough fight with a different character.
Locker Keys and Coin Lockers
Scattered throughout Kamurocho are numerous coin lockers, each requiring a specific key to open. These lockers contain a wide variety of useful items, from healing drinks and cash to rare accessories and crafting components.
Collecting Locker Keys
Locker Keys are small, silver keys with a letter and number (e.g., A1, B5). They are often found:
- On the Ground: Look closely in alleys, behind vending machines, and in corners. They often sparkle faintly.
- After Fights: Sometimes enemies will drop a locker key upon defeat.
- In Mini-Games: Certain mini-games might reward you with a key.
Strategy: Make it a habit to scan your surroundings for sparkling objects, especially after clearing out a group of thugs. The mini-map will often display a small key icon when one is nearby.
Opening Coin Lockers
Once you have a key, head to one of the Coin Locker locations:
- Theater Square: The most prominent set of lockers is located in the alleyway just east of Theater Square, near the entrance to the Champion District.
- Underground Mall: There's another set of lockers in the underground shopping mall beneath the Millennium Tower.
Interact with the lockers, select the key you wish to use, and claim your prize. Remember, each key corresponds to a specific locker, so you can't just use any key on any locker.
Important: Locker contents are fixed. If you're looking for a specific item, consult a detailed locker key guide to find its exact location and corresponding key.
Selling Unwanted Items
Don't let your inventory or Item Box get cluttered with junk. Many shops will buy items from you, providing a valuable source of income.
- Weapons Dealers: Shops like Kamiyama Works will buy unwanted weapons and armor.
- Pawn Shops: Ebisu Pawn is your go-to for selling most other items, including expensive plates (e.g., Platinum Plate, Gold Plate) and various trinkets.
Regularly check your inventory and Item Box for items you no longer need or that have low utility. Selling them can fund your next meal, a new weapon, or even a trip to the massage parlor.
