Character-Specific Challenges
Beyond the main story and substories, each of the four protagonists in Yakuza 4 has unique challenges and side activities that further develop their skills and provide valuable rewards. Mastering these challenges is key to fully experiencing everything Kamurocho has to offer.
Shun Akiyama: The Loan Shark's Trials
Akiyama's challenges revolve around his loan shark business, Sky Finance, and his unique fighting style. These often involve managing his clients and participating in street fights with specific conditions.
- Client Repayment Missions:
- Objective: Successfully collect repayments from various clients. These often involve light combat or specific dialogue choices.
- Walkthrough: Keep an eye on your phone for calls from Hana. She'll inform you of overdue payments. Head to the indicated location on your map. Some clients will pay without issue, while others will require a quick beatdown. For clients who try to run, use Akiyama's quickstep and chase mechanics to corner them.
- Key Items/Locations: Sky Finance (Millennium Tower East St.), various client locations marked on the map.
- Strategy: Upgrade Akiyama's speed and evasion early to make chasing easier. His rapid kicks are excellent for quickly dispatching weaker opponents during these encounters.
- Street Fight Challenges:
- Objective: Participate in specific street fights with unique rules, such as "Defeat all enemies without taking damage" or "Finish with a Heat Action."
- Walkthrough: These challenges are often triggered by talking to certain NPCs around Kamurocho or by simply engaging in random encounters. Pay attention to the on-screen prompts for the specific conditions.
- Key Items/Locations: No specific items, but having healing items like Staminan X or Toughness Z is always wise. These fights can occur anywhere in Kamurocho.
- Strategy: For "no damage" challenges, focus on dodging and using quick, precise attacks. Akiyama's aerial attacks and Heat Actions are excellent for crowd control and finishing blows. Consider equipping accessories that boost evasion or Heat gain.
Taiga Saejima: The Convict's Training
Saejima's challenges focus on his raw strength and brute force, often involving intense brawls against multiple opponents or specific environmental interactions.
- Underground Coliseum Fights:
- Objective: Dominate the various tournaments and special matches in the Underground Coliseum.
- Walkthrough: Access the Coliseum via the secret entrance in the sewers (accessible after a certain point in Saejima's story). Each tournament has different entry requirements and opponent types. Start with the lower-tier tournaments and work your way up.
- Key Items/Locations: Underground Coliseum (accessible from the sewers beneath Park Boulevard). Ensure you have powerful weapons like the Metal Bat or Sturdy Iron Pipe for certain matches, though Saejima excels bare-handed.
- Strategy: Saejima's charged attacks are devastating. Learn to time them effectively to break enemy guards and deal massive damage. His grab attacks and environmental Heat Actions are also crucial for managing crowds. Stock up on healing items like Toughness Infinity before challenging higher-tier tournaments.
- "Smash & Grab" Challenges:
- Objective: Use Saejima's immense strength to break specific environmental objects or defeat enemies with thrown objects.
- Walkthrough: These challenges are often found as part of substories or random street encounters where you're prompted to use the environment. Look for glowing objects or destructible elements.
- Key Items/Locations: Various destructible objects throughout Kamurocho (e.g., telephone booths, vending machines, motorcycles).
- Strategy: Max out Saejima's strength and learn his "Weapon Master" abilities to maximize damage with thrown objects. Practice picking up and throwing heavy items quickly to chain attacks.
Masayoshi Tanimura: The Detective's Investigations
Tanimura's challenges highlight his role as a detective, focusing on investigations, arrests, and precise combat against armed opponents.
- Police Radio Missions:
- Objective: Respond to various calls on Tanimura's police radio, ranging from petty theft to violent assaults.
- Walkthrough: Periodically, Tanimura's police radio will buzz. Listen to the dispatch and head to the marked location on your map. These missions often involve apprehending suspects, which can lead to combat or quick chase sequences.
- Key Items/Locations: Tanimura's Police Radio (always equipped). These missions occur randomly across Kamurocho.
- Strategy: Tanimura's parry and counter-attacks are his bread and butter. Master these to quickly disarm and subdue opponents. His "Arrest" Heat Action is excellent for ending fights efficiently and gaining bonus experience. Consider upgrading his defense and parry timing.
- "Disarm & Apprehend" Challenges:
- Objective: Successfully disarm armed opponents and then apprehend them without causing excessive harm.
- Walkthrough: These challenges appear during certain police radio missions or as specific substories. The key is to use Tanimura's parry to knock weapons out of enemies' hands, then follow up with a grab or an arrest Heat Action.
- Key Items/Locations: No specific items, but having a full Heat Gauge is beneficial for quick arrests.
- Strategy: Focus on enemies with knives, guns, or other weapons. Wait for their attack, then execute a perfect parry (L1/LB + Square/X at the right moment). Immediately follow up with a grab (Circle/B) or a Heat Action. Avoid using overly aggressive combos that might accidentally defeat the target before apprehension.
Kazuma Kiryu: The Dragon's Legacy
Kiryu's challenges often involve proving his strength and legendary status through various fighting tournaments and helping those in need, much like his previous adventures.
- Rooftop Fighter Challenges:
- Objective: Defeat a series of increasingly difficult opponents on the rooftops of Kamurocho.
- Walkthrough: After a certain point in Kiryu's story, you'll encounter an NPC who introduces you to the rooftop fighting circuit. Climb to various designated rooftops (often via fire escapes or specific stairwells) to find challengers.
- Key Items/Locations: Various rooftops across Kamurocho, particularly around Theater Square and Nakamichi St. Having strong healing items like Staminan Royale is highly recommended for later fights.
- Strategy: Kiryu's balanced fighting style allows for adaptability. Use his powerful combos, grab attacks, and environmental Heat Actions effectively. Don't be afraid to switch between his various stances if you've unlocked them (though in Yakuza 4, his style is more singular). Focus on upgrading his attack power and Heat Gauge regeneration.
- "Legendary Brawler" Missions:
- Objective: Engage in challenging street fights against groups of powerful enemies or unique boss-like opponents.
- Walkthrough: These missions are often triggered by specific substories or by reaching certain milestones in Kiryu's overall progression. They are designed to test your combat prowess.
- Key Items/Locations: No specific items, but ensure Kiryu is fully equipped with his best gear and plenty of healing. These can occur anywhere in Kamurocho.
- Strategy: use Kiryu's full arsenal of Heat Actions. His "Essence of Extreme" moves are particularly effective against single, tough opponents. For groups, focus on crowd control with wide-sweeping attacks and environmental interactions. Don't underestimate the power of weapons you find on the ground.
