Combat System Deep Dive
Welcome to the streets of Kamurocho, where fists do the talking and every encounter is an opportunity to showcase your fighting prowess. Yakuza 4 introduces a dynamic combat system, evolving from its predecessors with four distinct protagonists, each boasting a unique fighting style. Mastering these styles and understanding the underlying mechanics is crucial for dominating the Tokyo underworld.
Understanding Your Fighters
Unlike previous entries, Yakuza 4 features four playable characters: Kazuma Kiryu, Shun Akiyama, Taiga Saejima, and Masayoshi Tanimura. Each character possesses a unique combat style, requiring different approaches to combat encounters.
- Kazuma Kiryu: The Dragon of Dojima
- Style: Traditional Brawler. Kiryu's style is a balanced blend of powerful strikes and defensive maneuvers. He excels in one-on-one combat and can easily chain combos.
- Strengths: High damage output, excellent Heat Actions, and a strong guard. His Tiger Drop counter is devastating when timed correctly.
- Weaknesses: Can be overwhelmed by multiple fast enemies if not careful with positioning.
- Key Abilities to Unlock: Prioritize unlocking the "Tiger Drop" from Komaki, found in the Komaki Dojo in the Champion District. Also, invest in his "Heat Wave" and "Essence of Extreme" Heat Actions for maximum crowd control and boss damage.
- Shun Akiyama: The Loan Shark with a Kick
- Style: Agile Kicks and Evasion. Akiyama's combat revolves around quick, fluid kicks and evasive dodges, making him excellent for controlling groups and avoiding damage.
- Strengths: Incredible speed, wide-area attacks, and excellent for maintaining distance. His aerial combos are fantastic for juggling enemies.
- Weaknesses: Lower individual strike damage compared to Kiryu or Saejima, relies heavily on maintaining momentum.
- Key Abilities to Unlock: Focus on his "Air Strike" and "Essence of Aerial Dance" Heat Actions. Seek out the "Master of Kicks" training from Saigo in the Park Boulevard area to enhance his kicking techniques and unlock new evasive maneuvers.
- Taiga Saejima: The Beast of Kamurocho
- Style: Brutal Power and Grappling. Saejima is a powerhouse, specializing in slow, heavy strikes and powerful grabs that can decimate single targets or small groups.
- Strengths: Unmatched raw power, can pick up and throw almost any enemy, and has high health. His charge attacks break through guards easily.
- Weaknesses: Slow attack speed, vulnerable during charge-ups, and less agile than other characters.
- Key Abilities to Unlock: Prioritize "Essence of Crushing" and "Essence of the Beast" Heat Actions. Train with the "Master of Brute Force" (found in the sewers beneath the Millennium Tower) to unlock powerful charge attacks and grappling techniques.
- Masayoshi Tanimura: The Corrupt Cop's Jujutsu
- Style: Defensive Parries and Arrests. Tanimura utilizes a unique style focused on parrying, counter-attacks, and disarming opponents, often leading to arrests rather than KOs.
- Strengths: Excellent crowd control through parries and arrests, can disarm enemies and use their weapons, and gains money from arrests.
- Weaknesses: Lower direct damage, relies heavily on timing parries, and can be challenging against bosses who cannot be arrested.
- Key Abilities to Unlock: Invest in "Essence of Arrest" and "Essence of Disarming" Heat Actions. Seek out the "Master of Jujutsu" in the back alleys of the Theater Square area to learn advanced parrying and counter-attack techniques.
Advanced Combat Mechanics
Beyond individual styles, several universal mechanics are key to mastering combat in Yakuza 4:
- Heat Gauge: The blue bar below your health. It fills by landing attacks, successfully guarding, and performing evasive maneuvers. A full Heat Gauge allows you to perform powerful Heat Actions.
- Heat Actions: Context-sensitive special moves triggered by pressing Triangle when your Heat Gauge is sufficiently filled and an enemy is in the correct position. These are your primary source of high damage and can often finish off opponents or clear crowds. Experiment with different environments and enemy states to discover new Heat Actions.
- Weapon Usage: Most objects in the environment can be picked up and used as weapons (e.g., bicycles, traffic cones, signs). Weapons deal increased damage but have limited durability. Some characters, like Tanimura, can disarm enemies and use their weapons against them.
- Grabbing: Press Circle to grab an enemy. From a grab, you can perform throws, knee strikes, or set up for Heat Actions. Saejima excels at grabbing and throwing multiple enemies.
- Guarding & Dodging: Hold L1 (PS3/PS4) or LB (Xbox) to guard. Tap X (PS3/PS4) or A (Xbox) to dodge. Guarding reduces incoming damage, while dodging allows you to evade attacks entirely and reposition. Perfect dodges can sometimes lead to counter-attack opportunities.
- Revelations: These are unique mini-events where your character observes something in the environment or a specific fighting technique, leading to the inspiration for a new Heat Action. Keep an eye out for glowing prompts or unusual situations during exploration. For example, Akiyama might learn a new aerial kick by observing a street performer.
Strategic Item Usage
Don't underestimate the power of items in a tough fight. Always keep your inventory stocked with healing items and stat boosts.
- Healing Items:
- Staminan Royale: Fully restores HP and a significant portion of Heat. Essential for boss battles. Purchase from M Store or Poppo convenience stores.
- Toughness Emperor: Fully restores HP. A reliable mid-fight recovery. Available at various convenience stores.
- Sushi Set: Restores a moderate amount of HP. Good for general street brawls. Found at Sushi Gin or other restaurants.
- Stat Boosts:
- Heat Gauge Boost: Items like "Heat Energy Drink" instantly fill a portion of your Heat Gauge, allowing for quick Heat Action deployment.
- Attack/Defense Boosts: Certain food items or drinks can temporarily increase your attack or defense. Check restaurant menus for these temporary buffs before major encounters.
Remember, preparation is key. Before heading into a known difficult encounter or boss fight, ensure your inventory is full of the best healing items you can afford, and consider visiting restaurants for temporary stat boosts.
